This paper explores ways in which service-learning programs can enhance ethics education in engineering. Service-learning programs combine volunteer work and academic study. The National Society for Professional Engineers (NSPE) and American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) codes of ethics explicitly encourage engineers to seek opportunities, beyond their work-related responsibilities, to serve their communities. Ethical decision-making is essential to professionalism in engineering. For that reason, ethics is a required topic in an
ABET approved engineering curriculum and it must be a foundational strand that runs throughout the entire curriculum. In this
paper the curriculum approach that is under development at the Padnos School of Engineering (PSE) at Grand Valley State University
will be described. The design of this program draws heavily from the successful approach used at the service academies — in
particular West Point and the United States Naval Academy. As is the case for the service academies, all students are introduced
to the “Honor Concept” (which includes an Honor Code) as freshmen. As an element of professionalism the PSE program requires
1500 hours of co-op experience which is normally divided into three semesters of full-time work alternated with academic semesters
during the last two years of the program. This offers the faculty an opportunity to teach ethics as a natural aspect of professionalism
through the academic requirements for co-op. In addition to required elements throughout the program, the students are offered
opportunities to participate in service projects which highlight responsible citizenship. These elements and other parts of
the approach will be described.

Since 11 September 2001 and the anthrax attacks that followed in the US, public and policy concerns about the security threats
posed by biological weapons have increased significantly. With this has come an expansion of those activities in civil society
deemed as potential sites for applying security controls. This paper examines the assumptions and implications of national
and international efforts in one such area: how a balance or integration can take place between security and openness in civilian
biomedical research through devising professional codes of conduct for scientists. Future attempts to establish such codes
must find a way of reconciling or at least addressing dilemmatic and tension-ridden issues about the appropriateness of research;

This paper explores the concept of sustainable development and its ethical and public policy implications for engineering
and multinational corporations. Sustainable development involves achieving objectives in three realms: ecological (sustainable
scale), economic (efficient allocation) and social (just distribution). While movement toward a sustainable society is dependent
upon satisfying all three objectives, questions of just distribution and other questions of equity are often left off the
table or downplayed when engineers and corporate leaders consider sustainable development issues. Indeed, almost all the effort
of engineers and engineering organizations on the issue of sustainable development has been focused on striking a balance
between economic development and environmental protection. Similarly, corporate approaches rely on technological fixes to
the challenges posed by sustainable development. While there have been some efforts aimed at incorporating environmental and
social equity concepts into engineering codes of ethics, social concerns have been secondary to environmental issues. The
incongruity between the ideal of sustainable development and the way in which it is typically characterized by the engineering
and business communities has significant implications for engineering and public policy, engineering ethics, and the potential
roles of engineers and multinational corporations as facilitators of a transition to a sustainable society.

Formalizing shared ethical standards is an activity of scientific societies designed to achieve a collective goal of promoting
ethical conduct. A scientist who is faced with the choice of becoming a “whistleblower” by exposing misconduct does so in
the context of these ethical standards. Examination of ethics policies of scientific societies which are members of the Council
of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) shows a breadth of purpose and scope in these policies. Among the CSSP member societies,
some ethics policies chiefly present the ethical culture of the community in an educational context and do not have enforcement
procedures. Other policies are more comprehensive and include standards for certification, procedures for addressing ethical
issues, and established sanctions. Of the 36 member societies of CSSP that have developed a code or adopted a code of another
professional society, 18 specifically identified a responsibility to expose ethical misconduct, demonstrating an acknowledgment
of the possible critical role of the whistleblower in addressing ethical issues. Scientific societies may revise their ethics
codes based upon experience gained in addressing cases of ethical misconduct.
In most cases, the action of a whistleblower is the initial step in addressing an ethics violation; the whistleblower may
either be in the position of an observer or a victim, such as in the case of someone who discovers that his or her own work
has been plagiarized. The ethics committee of a scientific society is one of several possible outlets through which the whistleblower
can voice a complaint or concern. Ethical violations can include falsification, fabrication, plagiarism and other authorship
disputes, conflict of interest and other serious violations. Commonly, some of these violations may involve publication in
the scientific literature. Thus addressing ethical issues may be intertwined with a scientific society’s role in the dissemination
of new scientific results. For a journal published by a scientific society, the editor can refer at some point to the ethics
committee of the society. Whereas, in the case of a journal published by a commercial publisher, the editor may be without
direct support of the associated scientific community in handling the case. The association of a journal with a scientific
society may thus direct a whistleblower towards addressing the issue within the scientific community rather than involving
the press or talking to colleagues who may gossip. A formal procedure for handling ethics cases may also discourage false
accusers. Another advantage of handling complaints through ethics committees is that decisions to contact home institutions
or funding agencies can be made by the ethics committee and are not the responsibility of the whistleblower or the editor
of the journal. The general assessment is that the establishment of ethics policies, especially policies covering publication
in society journals, will promote a culture supportive of whistleblowers and discouraging to false accusers.

Previous literature has documented the general issues psychologists often face while balancing their personal and professional lives. The struggle stems from attempting to satisfy the need to maintain a life outside of work while having the professional obligation to follow the American Psychological Association’s (APA’s) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (Ethics Code) to prevent their personal lives from interfering with their professional roles and relationships. The present article analyzes the subject of psychologists taking a public position on controversial public issues. Although the APA Ethics Code does not restrict how psychologists conduct themselves during their personal time, taking a public stance on a controversial issue could potentially strain professional relationships and inadvertently reflect negatively on the profession. The present article examines ethical issues that (a) should be taken into account before psychologists take a public position on a controversial issue and (b) are in conflict with APA’s Ethics Code or current research. 相似文献

Criminal organizations have a strong influence on social, political, and economic life in Italy and other parts of the world. Nonetheless, local populations display collective passivity against organized crime, a phenomenon known as omertà. Omertà is linked to the concepts of honor and masculinity. That is, in order to fit ideological constructions of manliness, individuals should display indifference toward illegal activities and should not collaborate with legal institutions. In two studies, we investigated the link between endorsement of a masculine honor ideology and collective action intentions against criminal organizations (antimafia). Study 1 (N = 121) involved a Northern Italian sample, and Study 2 (N = 301) involved a Southern Italian sample. Across studies, results showed that endorsement of masculine honor ideology was associated with lower willingness to engage in social activism against criminal organizations. This relationship was mediated by attitudes toward criminal organizations (Study 1 and 2) and, in line with the notion of omertà, by lower levels of collective motive and more anxiety about interacting with police (Study 2). Identifying strongly with the nation could entail a willingness to criticize the country or a refusal to do so. The studies reported here examine the extent to which masculine honor inspires the latter and, in turn, motivates teaching allegiance to youth in a manner that could discourage national criticism. Whereas Study 1 provides an initial test of this idea by evaluating blind patriotism's ability to mediate the link between honor endorsement and general support for allegiance education (e.g., singing the National Anthem at school functions), Studies 2 and 3 do so more decisively by focusing on more severe outcomes such as punishing students who refuse to pledge loyalty to the United States. The predicted pattern of mediation occurred in every case, even when honor endorsers were experimentally induced to feel anger toward the country (Study 3). Explanations for this latter finding are discussed and include the role of identity fusion in honor endorsers’ commitment to the nation and the potential for real and enduring governmental threats to weaken or eliminate the pattern of mediation observed. 相似文献

Performance in numerical classification tasks involving either parity or magnitude judgements is quicker when small numbers are mapped onto a left-sided response and large numbers onto a right-sided response than for the opposite mapping (i.e., the spatial–numerical association of response codes or SNARC effect). Recent research by Gevers et al. [Gevers, W., Santens, S., Dhooge, E., Chen, Q., Van den Bossche, L., Fias, W., & Verguts, T. (2010). Verbal-spatial and visuospatial coding of number–space interactions. Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 139, 180–190] suggests that this effect also arises for vocal “left” and “right” responding, indicating that verbal–spatial coding has a role to play in determining it. Another presumably verbal-based, spatial–numerical mapping phenomenon is the linguistic markedness association of response codes (MARC) effect whereby responding in parity tasks is quicker when odd numbers are mapped onto left-sided responses and even numbers onto right-sided responses. A recent account of both the SNARC and MARC effects is based on the polarity correspondence principle [Proctor, R. W., & Cho, Y. S. (2006). Polarity correspondence: A general principle for performance of speeded binary classification tasks. Psychological Bulletin, 132, 416–442]. This account assumes that stimulus and response alternatives are coded along any number of dimensions in terms of – and + polarities with quicker responding when the polarity codes for the stimulus and the response correspond. In the present study, even–odd parity judgements were made using either “left” and “right” or “bad” and “good” vocal responses. Results indicated that a SNARC effect was indeed present for the former type of vocal responding, providing further evidence for the sufficiency of the verbal–spatial coding account for this effect. However, the decided lack of an analogous SNARC-like effect in the results for the latter type of vocal responding provides an important constraint on the presumed generality of the polarity correspondence account. On the other hand, the presence of robust MARC effects for “bad” and “good” but not “left” and “right” vocal responses is consistent with the view that such effects are due to conceptual associations between semantic codes for odd–even and bad–good (but not necessarily left–right). 相似文献

Two studies examined anger and shame, and their associated appraisals and behavioral intentions, in response to harm to an in-group's social-image. In Study 1, 37 British Muslims (18 men, 19 women) reported incidents in which they were devalued as Muslims. In Study 2, 108 British Muslims (57 females, 50 males, 1 undisclosed) were presented with objective evidence of their in-group's devaluation: the controversial cartoons about Prophet Muhammad The appraisal of harm to social-image predicted anger and shame (Studies 1 and 2), whereas the appraisal of offense only predicted anger (Study 2). Anger was a more empowering response than shame, as anger predicted willingness for public confrontation (Studies 1 & 2), institutional punishment (Study 2), and written disapproval (Study 2). In contrast, shame only predicted written disapproval (Study 2). Furthermore, independent of individual differences in identification as Muslim, a mediation model showed that individual differences in honor orientation predicted anger and shame via the appraisals (Study 2). Implications for theory and research are discussed. 相似文献
