The paper considers the account of happiness given in Boethius's Consolations of Philosophy. This account claims that happiness requires security of possession, and argues from this requirement to the conclusion that worldly goods, which of their nature cannot be securely possessed, cannot provide happiness. This argument is shown to depend on assuming a life-driven account of human motivation, rather than a goods-driven account of human motivation. The life-driven account, according to which voluntary actions are ultimately motivated by the pursuit of a certain kind of life, is defended against the goods-driven account, according to which actions are motivated by the pursuit of goods the enjoyment of which can only be episodes in a human life. It is claimed that Boethius is right in holding a life-driven account, and that his account of happiness follows from it. 相似文献

QWL is conceptualized in terms of the interface between employee role identities and work resources. QWL programs serve to
enhance QOL by (1) providing appropriate work resources to meet the expectations of employee role identities, (2) reducing
role conflict in work and non-work life, (3) enhancing multiple role identities, (4) reducing role demands, (5) reducing stress
related to work and non-work role identities, and (6) increasing the value of the role identity. We describe a variety of
QWL programs related to work life (decentralized organization structures, teamwork, parallel structures, ethical corporate
mission and culture, the organization work schedule, etc.) and non-work life (work at home, flextime, compressed work week,
part-time work arrangements, job sharing, etc.) and show how they serve to enhance QOL using the language of work-life identity.

Materialistic strivings have been implicated as a cause of unhappiness. Gratitude, on the other hand – both in its manifestations
as a chronic affective trait and as a more temporary emotional experience – may be a cause of happiness. In the present paper
we review the empirical research on the relationships among materialism, gratitude, and well-being. We present new correlational
data on the gratitude–materialism relationship and propose that gratitude may have the potential to reduce materialistic strivings
and consequently diminish the negative effects of materialistic strivings on psychological well-being. We conclude with some
recommendations for future research on the relationships among gratitude, materialism, and well-being. 相似文献

What do, or should, happiness studies study? Everything to which we refer with the word ‘‘happiness’’ is worth some study. But the study of subjective states covers only part of the ground covered by the word ‘‘happiness’’ and by no means all the ground central to understanding happiness. On the central use of ‘‘happiness,’’ to be happy is to be glad or satisfied or content, which suggests subjectivity, with having a good measure of what is important in life, which suggests objectivity. We find the same suggestion of both subjectivity and objectivity in the list of what enhances the quality of life. There are strong arguments in favour both of the subjectivity of what enhances life and of its objectivity. I argue that neither is right, that the story is more complicated. The conclusion of the story is that there is a list of several non-reducible features that contribute to the quality of a characteristic human life, and that anything that contributes to the quality of any human life will be one or other of these features. But there is a problem. When we speak of the quality of a human life, there may be no one thing we have in mind. Perhaps some of us are not disagreeing with one another over the nature of a ‘‘happy’’ life but speaking of different things. 相似文献

Relying on the theoretical model of [Lyubomirsky et al. 2005, Review of General Psychology, 9, pp. 111–131], the present study
investigated the relationship between personality, number of friends, best friendship quality and happiness among 423 young
adults (n = 300 women). The main interest was to examine whether friendship contributed to happiness while controlling for personality.
Friendship variables accounted for 58% of the variance in happiness. Results revealed that friendship quality predicted happiness
above and beyond the influence of personality and number of friends, but friendship conflict was not a significant predictor.
Additional analyses revealed that the companionship and self-validation features of friendship quality were predictive of
happiness while controlling for gender and personality. The findings were discussed in the light of theory and empirical research
and suggestions were made for future research.

Life satisfaction is widely considered to be a central aspect of human welfare. Many have identified happiness with it, and
some maintain that well-being consists largely or wholly in being satisfied with one’s life. Empirical research on well-being
relies heavily on life satisfaction studies. The paper contends that life satisfaction attitudes are less important, and matter
for different reasons, than is widely believed.] For such attitudes are appropriately governed by ethical norms and are perspectival
in ways that make the relationship between life satisfaction and welfare far more convoluted than we tend to expect. And the
common identification of life satisfaction with happiness, as well as widespread views about the centrality of life satisfaction
for well-being, are problematical at best. The argument also reveals an unexpected way in which philosophical ethics can inform
scientific psychology: specifically, ethical reflection can help explain empirical results insofar as they depend on people’s
