The qualitative regulation of grain size allows witnesses to increase the accuracy of their reports by adding alternatives (e.g., “the robber concealed his face with a mask, with a stocking, or with a balaclava”). However, such answers may include incompatible alternatives which may make police officers and juries distrust witnesses. In four preregistered experiments, we tested the effect of information with incompatible alternatives on witness credibility. In Experiments 1a, 1b, and 1c, we presented two short testimonies, one with incompatible alternatives and another without and credibility was lower with incompatible alternatives. In Experiment 2, we told participants that witnesses could report several alternatives and the effect was reduced. We explain the effect of incompatible alternatives on credibility from participants' inferences that a witness producing an answer with incompatible alternatives is not confident in their memory and a failure to fully appreciate the advantages of adding alternatives. 相似文献

Attaining an uninterrupted free report (FR) is at the heart of best practice investigative interviewing guidance. However, witnesses/victims do not naturally provide detailed accounts. Techniques have been developed to counter-act this, such as a report everything (RE) instruction. This research examined the relative effectiveness of an addition to the RE component, a demonstration of the level of detail, using a behavioural exemplar, by describing an innocuous object; the Demonstration for More detail (DeMo) technique. Participants (N = 61) watched a mock crime video and asked to recall it using one of three instructions: (a) basic FR as the control, (b) RE instruction and (c) RE instruction plus DeMo technique. Participants who were given the DeMo technique recalled more details than both the control and RE groups. Accuracy rates were similarly high across all conditions. The implications of using the DeMo technique within an investigative interview are discussed.

The present paper provides evidence that the processing of verb final clauses proceeds incrementally based on local information that becomes available with each word. The results of three self-paced reading experiments are reported in support of the proposal that NPs in Japanese are associated within clauses before a verb is processed. It is argued that a clause boundary is posited whenever case markers prevent two NPs from being part of the same clause, and slow reading times at the second NP are used as supporting evidence. Moreover, clause boundaries induced by case marking can facilitate processing at later points in the sentence as attested to by faster reading times at relative-clause heads. Contrary to previous findings that argued against a subclass of head-driven parsers, the present results are not easily reconcilable with any type of model that delays parsing decisions until a verb is available in the input sentence. 相似文献

This paper describes how the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
has chosen to integrate ethics into their curriculum. All university freshmen engineering students are introduced to ethics
through the presentation of ethical dilemmas. During this exercise, students are forced to argue both sides (‘for’ and ‘against’)
of a hypothetical ethical engineering dilemma. It provides a setting for great discussion with the desired outcome that they
learn to carefully analyze a situation before they draw conclusions. In the sophomore year, students are introduced to methods
to use the fundamental principles, the fundamental canons, and the suggested guidelines for use with the fundamental canons
of ethics when analyzing appropriate action to be taken when confronted with ethical dilemmas. We currently use the ‘sophomore’
method for seniors because the sequencing is just beginning. Next year the seniors will do more indepth analysis of ethical
case studies.

Without question “business ethics” is one of the hot topics of the day. Over the past months we have seen business after business
charged with improper practices that violate commonly-accepted ethical norms. This has led to a loss of confidence in corporate
management, and has had severe economic consequences. From many quarters business educators have heard the call to put more
emphasis on ethical practices in their business courses and curricula. Engineering educators are also heeding this call, since
the practice of engineering usually involves working for (or leading) a business and/or engaging in business transactions.
In the summer of 2002, Auburn University’s Engineering Professional Development program made the decision to produce—based
on the author’s Executive MBA course in Business Ethics—a distance-delivered continuing education program for professional
engineers and surveyors. Participants across the USA now may use the course to satisfy continuing education requirements with
respect to professional licensing and certification. This paper outlines the purpose and content of the course and describes
its production, distribution, application, and evaluation.

A senior level capstone design experience has been developed and offered with a particular emphasis on many of the professional
issues raised in Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) Engineering Criterion IV. The course has sought
to develop student awareness of the ethical foundation of the engineering profession, the global and societal framework within
which engineers practice, and the environmental impact on engineering. The capstone design course also focused upon improving
the technical communications skills of the graduating senior class with both extensive instruction in writing and multiple
workshops dealing with the art of making an effective oral presentation. The effectiveness of the design course was assessed
using Kirkpatrick’s model for evaluating training programs.

This paper briefly summarizes current thinking in engineering ethics education, argues that much of that ethical instruction
runs the risk of being only superficially effective, and explores some of the underlying systemic barriers within academia
that contribute to this result. This is not to criticize or discourage efforts to improve ethics instruction. Rather it is
to point to some more fundamental problems that still must be addressed in order to realize the full potential of enhanced
ethics instruction. Issues discussed will include: intellectual engagement versus emotional engagement; the gravitational
pull of curricular structures; the nature of engineering faculty; and the “engineer-ization” of ethics.

The ethical choices faced by engineers today are increasingly complex. Competing and conflicting ethical demands from clients,
communities, employees, and personal objectives combine to suggest that engineers employ ethical approaches that are adaptive
yet grounded in three concrete professional circumstances: first, that engineers apply unique professional skills in the service
of a client, subject to protecting the public interest; second, that engineers advance the state of knowledge of their professional
field through reflection, research, and sharing experience in journals and conferences, and third, that they develop new professionals
by active mentoring. This paper examines five features of American pragmatism and suggests that its emphasis on specific,
context-based ethical decision making can assist engineers in a postmodern setting. In particular, it considers the venues
of interpersonal ethical choices, institutional ethical conflicts, and social choices that have ethical components. Pragmatism
suggests that in such a complex ethical climate, there is a need for the co-evolution of judgment and action, for individual
reflective judgment in particular situations, and for ceasing to search for a single, immutable principle for ethical choice.

A survey on ethical issues in engineering was administered over a five-year period to Stanford engineering students and practicing
engineers. Analysis of its results strongly suggests that important disconnects exist between the education of engineering
students regarding ethical issues in engineering on the one hand, and the realities of contemporary engineering practice on
the other. Two noteworthy consequences of these gaps are that the views of engineering students differ substantially over
what makes an issue an ethical issue, while practicing engineers exhibit significant disagreement over what is the most important
non-technical aspect of being a responsible engineering professional in contemporary society. These divergences impede the
recognition of ethical issues and of specific moral responsibilities of engineers in concrete professional practice. It is
argued that the use of suitably refined and probing surveys of engineering students and practicing engineers about ethical
issues in engineering is an important although neglected empirical approach to the study of engineering ethics. Such an approach
can enhance the prevailing case study method and combat over-tidy theoretical-analytical approaches to the subject.

i.e. heed the space between the station platform and the carriage while entering or exiting.
