The second edition of Raymond G. Miltenberger's Behavior Modification: Principles and Procedures is reviewed. The first section of the review discusses the structure of the book. The second section of the review discusses its content. The third section offers some conclusions and describes a need for more advanced applied behavior analysis textbooks. Overall, the findings of the review are that the text is one of the best available for undergraduate instruction in applied behavior analysis. 相似文献

Graduate students in the sciences must develop practical skills geared toward scientific survival and success. This is particularly
true now, given the paucity of research funds and jobs. Along with more elementary skills, research ethics should be an integral
part of students’ scientific training. Survival skills include research skills, communication skills, general efficiency,
and preparation for post-graduate work. Ethics training covers guidelines for use of animal and human subjects, data treatment,
disclosure, credit issues, conflicts of interest, and response to misconduct. The objective of this paper is to describe,
from a graduate student’s perspective, the need for survival and ethics training in graduate programs and to raise both faculty
and student awareness of the possibilities for explicit instruction of these skills. Many survival skills and ethical practices
will be learned without explicit direction and some are already part of standard training; but, this is not the case for all
students or for all skills, so specific instruction is a necessity. Research faculty can use their own experience to help
students to develop the proficiencies they will need to succeed. 相似文献

In this self-study of an M.A. program in community psychology, the authors focused on evaluation of training goals related
to the values of collaboration, empowerment, and diversity. Employing quantitative and qualitative methods, the evaluator,
a thesis student in the program, cooperated with a stakeholder committee and other student, staff, and faculty members of
the program to construct the methods and interpret the findings. Although the converging sources of data showed that the program
was meeting its process goals to some extent, several key issues in the culture of training, such as the status of women,
the psychological sense of community, and a supportive learning environment, needed improvement. The authors interpret the
findings in terms of the impact of the university system and patriarchal norms on training in community psychology.

Given the increasing numbers of adult learners on university campuses, both as undergraduates and graduates, an understanding of adult learning processes is relevant—indeed essential—to the university's response to this student group. While educators have attempted to understand learners in terms of developmental stages, learning styles, and contextual factors, less attention has focused on the dynamics of helping relationships that attend learning or the importance of caring in the learning process. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and explicate the experience of caring as it relates to graduate education from the perspective of the graduate student. The connection between caring relationships and learning was confirmed. Seven components of the caring were identified. Implications for the university center on attention to relationship skills and the creation of a campus community in which caring relationships are encouraged and nurtured. 相似文献

Outcomes in clients transitioning from in-person counselling to telehealth counselling with trainees

The onset of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a rapid transition of mental health services from in-person to telehealth counselling. Despite the far-reaching impact of this transition, we know little about the impact of this transition on outcomes for clients working with counsellor trainees. The present study utilised longitudinal data collected from a counselling training centre at a major U.S. university to compare client ratings of depression, anxiety and working alliance across 1) in-person services delivered (i.e. pre-pandemic) and 2) telehealth services delivered after the pandemic began (i.e. intra-pandemic) among the same group of clients. Results support our hypothesis that changes in clients' self-reports would be generally equivalent across in-person and telehealth services. Depression and anxiety symptoms decreased, and working alliance tended to increase during both in-person and telehealth care; however, these trends were only statistically significant during telehealth services. Limitations related to sample size (N = 15 clients; up to 17 sessions per client) and low statistical power are discussed. Nonetheless, this study supports the growing body of literature supporting the efficacy of telehealth counselling services. We provide suggestions for future telehealth research and discuss implications for counsellor training. 相似文献

The ethics-related beliefs of Chinese international graduate students are heavily influenced by their academic cultural background, and given the nature of that culture, they often face challenges when adapting to the U.S. academic environment. This qualitative study examines Chinese graduate students’ perceptions of the differences between Chinese and American academic integrity practices and the effects of those differences on their ethical practices and adaptations in a graduate program in the United States. Data were collected via semistructured interviews in a public university in the United States. Findings suggest that perceptions of academic integrity in Chinese universities are influenced by Confucian philosophy, collectivist assumptions, and a resultant convenience mind-set. These cultural premises clash with academic expectations in the United States. Participants describe how they, and their Chinese peers, navigate U.S. integrity standards and provide recommendations for ways that U.S. schools can help them better adjust. We expand on those and provide recommendations for university personnel. 相似文献

A model is described for implementing a program in research ethics education in the face of federal and institutional mandates
and current resource, disciplinary, and infrastructure limitations. Also discussed are the historical background, content
and evaluation process of the workshop at the heart of the program, which reaches a diverse group of over 250 students per
year—from first-year graduate students in basic research labs to clinical fellows. The workshop addresses central issues in
both everyday laboratory ethics and in larger societal questions. Goals include improving overall awareness of ethics guidelines
and philosophy and enhancing skills in identifying and then analyzing the ethical components of situations. Pedagogies used
and their effectiveness and that of the overall workshop and extended program are addressed. Programs like these have initiated
a shift in the culture of basic research, which is a critical need given the current atmosphere. 相似文献
