‘It all boils down to respect doesn't it?’: Enacting a sense of community in a deprived inner‐city area

Audio recordings of meetings of two community groups in a deprived inner‐city area were analysed, using discursive psychological and conversation analytic techniques to explore situated enactments of ‘community’. Participants situated themselves as members of a geographical community, of an ‘imagined’ community and of other constitutive communities. A sense of community was enacted through five interactional strategies: Affirming moral codes, ‘defending’ other members, distinguishing insiders from outsiders, enacting empowerment and challenging institutions. Participants regularly employed emotional displays and affirmed moral positions, both to constitute ‘community’ and to take action in it. In so doing they worked up social capital and positioned community concerns in ways more reflective of their own situated values than of criminal law or government policy. Predicting parenting stress: children's behavioural problems and parents' coping

This study examined the effects of child characteristics and parent coping practices on parenting stress, based on a sample of parents of 64 boys with behavioural problems and a comparison group with parents of 128 boys. All parents completed questionnaires about stress, length of education, child characteristics, social support, sense of coherence and coping practices, in addition to interviews in their home about daily activities and relations with the child. A hierarchical regression model for predicting parenting stress was tested, and the results showed that having a child with behavioural problems predicted 57% of the variance in parenting stress. Social support and parental resources and strategies added to the prediction of parenting stress after controlling for family demographics and child characteristics. The parents in the clinical group (with boys referred to psychiatric units) were more often single parents with lower education, more often unemployed, less content with social support, and had lower scores on comprehensibility. These parents were significantly more stressed than parents in the comparison group. All these risk factors might be barriers against establishing a protective frame around a child. These parents, with a difficult child‐rearing situation, who perceived less support and had fewer material benefits, seemed to be more vulnerable. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

影响城市流动儿童自我认同的因素探析

目的：探索城市流动儿童自我认同现状及与家庭因素,亲子依恋和安全感的关系。方法：使用自我认同问卷,亲子依恋问卷,安全感问卷对四川省成都市五所打工子弟学校329名中小学生进行调查。结果：父亲文化程度（?=-0.123）、父母感情关系（?=0.107）、消极性依恋和依赖性依恋（?=-0.137、?=0.102）、人际安全感、确定安全感(?=0.338、?=0.202)可以解释流动儿童自我认同方差变异的35%。结论：不安全亲子依恋关系和流动儿童感受到的不安全感对其自我认同有较大的影响。     

The relation between teachers' math talk and the acquisition of number sense within kindergarten classrooms

The aim of the present study was to investigate the relation between teachers' math talk and the acquisition of number sense within kindergarten classrooms. The mathematical language input provided by 35 kindergarten teachers was examined with 9 different input categories. The results of this study indicate that the role of each of these math talk categories is not as straightforward as was hypothesized. Although significant positive relations were found for math talk categories such as cardinality and conventional nominatives, the relations between the categories' calculation and number symbols and children's score on specific number sense tasks were negative. Moreover, a large diversity in math talk was negatively related to kindergartners' number sense acquisition. These results suggest that teachers should be careful and selective with the amount of math talk that they offer to young children.     

The Canonical Sense of Scripture: Trinitarian or Christocentric?

Abstract: In this essay I develop a threefold sense for Scripture today: conventional, canonical, and contemporary. This is my “grammar” for evangelical theological hermeneutics. I explore in particular the canonical sense: the level of meaning of the biblical passage read in the light of the whole of Scripture, with Christ as the center and key. In dialogue with the Orthodox, I argue that such a christocentric approach must also be, finally, a Trinitarian one.     

城市居民视野中的医患关系——500份问卷的调查与思考

客观正确地认识和评价现实的医患关系,不仅是构建和谐医患关系的必要前提,也是构建社会主义和谐社会的重要内容。在对城市居民的500份问卷调查的分析研究基础上,发现了当前医患关系上中值得重视和思考的三个问题,并相应地提出三点建议。     

中小学生学业责任心的调查研究

目的：自编量表考察中小学生学业责任心状况。被试：徐州、盐城、镇江三个地区的小学、初中、高中的学生1678名,分析时删除未填写性别的72名被试,对1606名被试数据进行统计分析。结论：1．小学、初中和高中三个年级之间的学生的学业责任心水平存在显著差异：小学生的学业责任心水平显著高于高中生,初中生的学业责任心水平显著高于高中生;2．女生的学业责任心水平显著高于男生;3．初中阶段,镇江地区学生比盐城地区学生的学业责任心水平高;4．高中阶段,徐州地区学生比镇江地区学生学业责任心水平高,盐城地区学生比镇江地区学生学业责任心水平高;5．镇江地区,初中学生的学业责任心水平显著高于高中学生,小学生的学业责任心水平显著高于高中学生。     

The Impact of a Brief Bullying Bystander Intervention on Depressive Symptoms

The authors evaluated the impact of a brief bullying bystander intervention (STAC) on depressive symptoms among high school students using a randomized controlled design. Results of path analyses provided support for a mediational model in which the intervention was associated with an increase in sense of school belonging, which in turn was associated with a reduction in depressive symptoms. The authors discuss implications for high school counselors and counselors in other settings working with adolescents.     

TRANSFORMATION AND THE WAKING BODY: A RETURN TO TRUTH VIA OUR BODIES

This article considers the kind of knowledge that is constituted through embodied sensory perception and makes the case for a form of knowledge that is embodied, relational, and potentially transformational. Such knowledge is encountered through our physiological senses and cultivated by reestablishing connections to our bodies. The discussion starts by exploring the literature on sensory perception and interoception and moves on to the role of human agency, which is implicit in the idea of top‐down causation. It is argued that this process can be explained by a top‐down predictive model within which a sense of greater interoceptive accuracy may be cultivated while reducing interoceptive perturbation. The roles of active and perceptual inference are discussed with regard to the regulatory opportunities that these types of attention yield. By being more interoceptively aware, through a practice of contemplation, it is argued, we open ourselves to an encounter with divine presence that is immanent in the world around us.     

Sales manager cost control engagement: antecedents and performance implications

Many organizations face competing agendas by which they are expected to simultaneously grow sales output while controlling associated costs. At the interface of this organizational pressure and the sales force’s implementation of such initiatives is the sales manager. However, questions with significant implications remain regarding how a sales manager’s requisite engagement with cost control affects sales performance. To address this issue, the authors conceptualize and operationalize the notion of sales manager cost control engagement. Results from a survey of 178 business-to-business sales managers show the antecedent and consequence effects of sales manager cost control engagement. A variety of organizational factors are shown to effectively direct the sales manager’s attention to cost control, which in turn has a positive impact on cost-related sales performance. These findings add to an emergent body of research aimed at understanding key skills required of sales managers for driving sales performance as well as provide a novel perspective for sales managers to consider when balancing pressures between cost inputs and sales outputs. Several theoretical and managerial implications are offered, as are future research directions.
