Mentors and protégés from two formal mentoring programs were interviewed about the benefits associated with program participation, problems encountered in the program, and recommendations for program improvements. The most commonly reported benefits for protégés included learning, coaching, career planning, and psychosocial support. Mentors most frequently reported learning, developing a personal relationship, personal gratification, and enhanced managerial skills. Both groups identified a range of problems including mentor-protégé mismatches, scheduling difficulties, and geographic distance. Unique problems were also identified, including mentor neglect (by protégés), unmet expectations (by protégés), structural separation from the mentor (by protégés), and feelings of personal inadequacy (by mentors). Finally, suggestions for program improvement were identified such as clearer communication of program objectives, better matching, targeted participation in the program, and better program monitoring. Findings are discussed in terms of what we currently know about informal mentoring and implications for mentoring theory. Suggestions for mentoring practice are also discussed. 相似文献

Using data from 8th grade participants in the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development, factor analytic procedures were used to explore a model of active, engaged citizenship, termed Civic Identity/Civic Engagement (CICE). We identified a higher order factor model in which CICE is a second-order latent variable that is comprised of several dimensions including civic duty, civic skills, and civic participation, adult social connection, peer social connection, and neighborhood social connection. Covariation was assessed between CICE scores and participation in youth development organizations, such as 4-H. Participation in 4-H was related to higher scores on five of the six factors as well as the overall CICE score. Both limitations of this study and the need for longitudinal assessments of CICE are noted and the implications of the presence of an integrated construct of civic engagement for the conduct of youth programs is discussed. 相似文献

We develop a general framework for the design of temporal logics for concurrent recursive programs. A program execution is modeled as a partial order with multiple nesting relations. To specify properties of executions, we consider any temporal logic whose modalities are definable in monadic second-order logic and which, in addition, allows PDL-like path expressions. This captures, in a unifying framework, a wide range of logics defined for ranked and unranked trees, nested words, and Mazurkiewicz traces that have been studied separately. This study examined the effects of using a research based print reading program modified to accommodate beginning braille
readers using an alphabet or uncontracted braille reading approach with five beginning braille readers. Four of the 5 participants
displayed a clear increase in their ability to read high frequency words when they began using the Early Steps reading program
modified to an Early Steps Alphabet Braille Reading Program. Study findings indicate that access to reading activities and
materials afforded to sighted peers resulted in improved reading outcomes for children with visual impairments. Teachers,
participants, and family members all viewed the use of the uncontracted braille reading program and materials favorably. Specialized
reading instruction was also perceived as beneficial by teachers of students with visual impairments when the training addressed

We investigated the relationship between depression and parental sense of competence to child cognitive outcomes for a sample
of 49 adolescent mothers and their young children (Mean age=9 1/2 months) enrolled in a student parenting program. Cognitive development of the infants and toddlers was assessed using
the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Maternal depression was assessed with the CES-D and parental competence measured
with the Parental Sense of Competence Scale. Results indicated that maternal depression and parental sense of competence alone
did not predict children’s cognitive scores; the interaction of the variables significantly predicted children’s outcomes.
Mothers reporting high levels of depression, who self-reported high levels of parental competence, had children who scored
higher on the Bayley. Children of mothers with high levels of depression, and low reported levels of competence scored lower
on the Bayley. The relationship was not significant for mothers reporting low levels of depression. Our findings suggest additional
research needs to focus on the buffering effect of parental sense of competence for adolescent mothers experiencing depression. 相似文献

Although there has been a rapid increase in funding and attention to after-school programs, there is little understanding of how after-school programs impact children's developmental trajectories. The heterogeneity of American children makes it very unlikely that all children need after-school programming or that there is but one brand of after-school programming suitable for all youth. We discuss the numerous developmental and contextual factors that may influence which children benefit most from after-school programs as well as the nature of the after-school programs most beneficial to children's needs. The value of utilizing an ecological and developmental perspective to after-school program evaluation are presented, including the need for improved research designs and more detailed analyses of program type and services as well as a more complete determination of which children benefit the most from after-school participation. 相似文献

Widespread dissemination of evidence-based programs for underserved populations may require non-traditional means of service provision. Collaboration with paraprofessionals from communities that are targeted for intervention holds promise as a delivery strategy that may make programs more accessible and acceptable, especially to parents living in low-income, urban neighborhoods. We describe a paraprofessional training program for individuals living in a community targeted for preventive intervention based on high levels of poverty and community violence. The design and implementation of the training program are described in the context of issues related to the use of paraprofessionals in community-based, preventive interventions with parents of young children. We also provide insight into lessons learned from a feasibility study as well as general guidelines for the development of paraprofessional training programs for delivery of evidence-based programs. 相似文献
