Using the bench trial of Colorado's Amendment 2 as an example, this article focuses on the more general question of expert testimony in moral philosophy. It argues that there is indeed expertise in moral philosophy but argues against admitting such expert testimony in cases dealing with what John Rawls terms "constitutional essentials" and 'matters of basic justice." Developing the idea of public reason inherent in the Rawlsian concept of political liberalism, the article argues that philosophers can and should speak out on public issues, if they do so with due respect for certain restrictions, but that they should not serve as expert witnesses on core constitutional questions, since doing so suggests that they claim a type of authority that would require fellow citizens to defer to their views. Such claims to authority in basic ethical matters threaten the mutual respect for divergent comprehensive doctrines that lies at the core of political liberalism. Philosophers have a duty to serve the public good, and they perform this service in fruitful ways. But they should refuse a public role that appears incompatible with equal respect for the committed ethical searching of their fellow citizens. 相似文献

Presents a framework for categorizing pediatric psychology research into practice and service system outcomes and functioning. The questions of importance are (a) who is being served, (b) what services are provided, (c) how treatments are implemented, (d) how services are organized and staffed, (e) what are the outcomes of the services, (f) how do various consumers perceive services, (g) how services are reimbursed, and (h) what are alternatives and innovations? The framework of program evaluation is detailed for domains most germane to service delivery in pediatric/child health psychology. Such domains include diagnostic information on patients, types of intervention, behavioral/psychological outcome variables, costs of treatments, service system functioning, and perceptions of satisfaction from multiple sources. This framework may be useful in directing future research on the delivery of services in pediatric psychology settings, thereby adding to the value of the field. 相似文献

A study was conducted of nanotechnology (NT) researchers’ views about ethics in relation to their work. By means of a purpose-built
questionnaire, made available on the Internet, the study probed NT researchers’ general attitudes toward and beliefs about
ethics in relation to NT, as well as their views about specific NT-related ethical issues. The questionnaire attracted 1,037
respondents from 13 U.S. university-based NT research facilities. Responses to key questionnaire items are summarized and
noteworthy findings presented. For most respondents, the ethical responsibilities of NT researchers are not limited to those
related to safety and integrity in the laboratory. Most believe that NT researchers also have specific ethical responsibilities
to the society in which their research is done and likely to be applied. NT appears to be one of the first areas of contemporary
technoscientific activity in which a long-standing belief is being seriously challenged: the belief that society is solely
responsible for what happens when a researcher’s work, viewed as neutral and merely enabling, is applied in a particular social
context. Survey data reveal that most respondents strongly disagree with that paradigmatic belief. Finally, an index gauging
NT researcher sensitivity to ethics and ethical issues related to NT was constructed. A substantial majority of respondents
exhibited medium or high levels of sensitivity to ethics in relation to NT. Although most respondents view themselves as not
particularly well informed about ethics in relation to NT, a substantial majority are aware of and receptive to ethical issues
related to their work, and believe that these issues merit consideration by society and study by current and future NT practitioners.

Forensic practice in Australia and around the world attracts a high level of public and judicial scrutiny. The way in which the forensic psychologist conducts him or herself in ethically challenging situations is important not only to the reputation of the individual practitioner, but to the profession more widely. This paper outlines some of the ethical issues that commonly arise in forensic psychology practice and discusses these in relation to the recently published Australian Psychological Society (2007) Code of Ethics. We describe over 300,000 crisis calls made to a large national hotline over a 5-year period. Callers consisted of males and
females between the ages of 10 and 89. Overall, a slight majority of callers were first time callers (52%) and most (73%)
sought assistance with issues related to parenting, youth concerns, and mental health. Across the lifespan, issues dealing
with loneliness increased with age whereas depression-related calls decreased. Additionally, females were more likely than
their male counterparts to call the hotline by over a 2- to 1-margin. Findings lend preliminary support to the efficacy of
crisis call centers to utilize a flexible, yet well-defined problem-solving approach to assist those of all ages calling with

This article is an edited translation of an address given in Erfurt, Germany, on 12 May 2019, to celebrate the 90th birthday of Heino Falcke, dean (provost) of Erfurt from 1973 until his retirement in 1994. Falcke, who was also a member of the working group on Church and Society of the World Council of Churches, played a central role in developing the theological and ethical response of Protestant churches in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) to the threats to peace in a nuclear age. Toddlerhood is a sensitive period in the development of self-regulation, a set of adaptive skills that are fundamental to mental health and partly shaped by parenting. Healthy sleep is known to be critical for self-regulation; yet, the degree to which child sleep alters interactive child–parent processes remains understudied. This study examines associations between observed parenting and toddler self-regulation, with toddler sleep as a moderator of this association. Toddlers in low-income families (N = 171) and their mothers were videotaped during free play and a self-regulation challenge task; videos were coded for mothers’ behavior and affect (free play) and toddlers’ self-regulation (challenge task). Mothers reported their child's nighttime sleep duration via questionnaire. Results revealed significant Sleep × Maternal Negative Affect and Sleep × Maternal Negative Control interactions. Children who did not experience negative parenting had good self-regulation regardless of their nighttime sleep duration. For children who did experience negative parenting, self-regulation was intact among those who obtained more nighttime sleep, but significantly poorer among children who were getting less nighttime sleep. Thus, among children who were reported to obtain less nighttime sleep, there were more robust associations between negative parenting and poorer self-regulation than among toddlers who were reported to obtain more sleep. 相似文献

People who are seeking asylum often have lived experience of their personal boundaries and human rights being violated. For this reason, it is especially important that we consider the impact of boundaries in therapeutic work with this population. This paper explores work with a woman with a severe trauma history who was seeking asylum in England. Examples of perceived boundary crossings in the therapeutic relationship are examined. Considerations for other clinicians working with asylum seekers are discussed. These include: addressing socio-political factors; being sensitive to cultural differences; the importance of supervision and reflective practice; the personal impact of such work; and using critical thinking and warmth to manage boundaries rather than rigidly following rules. 相似文献
