Travel and residual emotional well-being

This study addresses the question of how work commutes change positive versus negative and active versus passive mood experienced after the commutes. Analyses are presented for 230 time-sampled morning commutes to work, made by 146 randomly sampled people in three different Swedish cities, asking them to use smartphones to report mood before, directly after, and later in the work place after the commute. The results show that self-reported positive emotional responses evoked by critical incidents are related to mood changes directly after the commute but not later in the day. It is also shown that satisfaction with the commute, measured retrospectively, is related to travel mode, travel time, as well as both positive and negative emotional responses to critical incidents.     

Prediction of weightlifter’s motor behavior to evaluate snatch weightlifting techniques based on a new method of investigation of consumed energy

Using proper technique in different sports is an inevitable factor. In this study, available techniques for snatch weightlifting are mathematically evaluated. The optimal motion trajectory is a technique used by weightlifters, which could be determined based on minimizing specific object functions. Object functions based on total kinetic energy, total torque and total power and some new multiobjective functions are minimized using genetic algorithm and the minimax principle. Some important motion characteristics of 13 professional weightlifters were extracted and used to validate the mathematical results. The double knee bending (DKB) technique was studied as a benchmark test. Some important movement features of the technique were shown by the mathematical analysis when applying an object function, that minimized joint torques and powers of different muscles independently. An object function based on joint forces did not show these features.     

Humanism and Theoretical Pluralism

Christian Smith's What Is a Person? calls for a normative turn in sociology—the grounding of sociology in a theory of human nature. While offering a systematic account of a thick view of personhood—what it should look like, how it can be applied, and why it is needed—the book proposes a critical realist personalism as the best metatheoretical direction for sociology. The author of this essay agrees with the main questions and direction of Smith's project. However, by historicizing the origins and sociological implications of personalist moral theory, the author problematizes the personalism that is one of the foundations of Smith's project. She contrasts personalism with humanism, suggesting that the latter might possess both the normative robustness and comparative potential needed for contemporary sociological theory and practice. She ends her response to Smith's book by raising questions about the relationship between critical realist personalism and theoretical pluralism.
