The present study investigated whether people can combine two memory strategies to encode pairs of words more efficiently than with a single strategy, and age-related differences in such strategy combination. Young and older adults were asked to encode pairs of words (e.g., satellite-tunnel). For each item, participants were told to use either the interactive-imagery strategy (e.g., mentally visualising the two words and making them interact), the sentence-generation strategy (i.e., generate a sentence linking the two words), or with strategy combination (i.e., generating a sentence while mentally visualising it). Participants obtained better recall performance on items encoded with strategy combination than on items encoded with interactive-imagery or sentence-generation strategies. Moreover, we found age-related decline in such strategy combination. These findings have important implications to further our understanding of execution of memory strategies, and suggest that strategy combination occurs in a variety of cognitive domains. 相似文献

This study assesses the effects of member expertise on group decision-making and group performance. Three-person cooperative groups and three independent individuals solved either an easy or moderately difficult version of the deductive logic game Mastermind. Experimental groups were given veridical performance information, i.e., the members' rankings on prior individual administrations of the task. Control groups were not provided with this information. Results supported the predictions of this study: (1) groups gave more weight to the input of their highest performing members with the group decision-making process being best approximated by post hoc “expert weighted” social decision schemes and (2) groups performed at the level of the best of an equivalent number of individuals. 相似文献

In this paper implicit function-based parameterizations for orthogonal and oblique rotation matrices are proposed. The parameterizations
are used to construct Newton algorithms for minimizing differentiable rotation criteria applied to m factors and p variables. The speed of the new algorithms is compared to that of existing algorithms and to that of Newton algorithms based
on alternative parameterizations. Several rotation criteria were examined and the algorithms were evaluated over a range of
values for m. Initial guesses for Newton algorithms were improved by subconvergence iterations of the gradient projection algorithm. Simulation
results suggest that no one algorithm is fastest for minimizing all criteria for all values of m. Among competing algorithms, the gradient projection algorithm alone was faster than the implicit function algorithm for
minimizing a quartic criterion over oblique rotation matrices when m is large. In all other conditions, however, the implicit function algorithms were competitive with or faster than the fastest

Smooth pursuit eye movements enable us to focus our eyes on moving objects by utilizing well-established mechanisms of visual motion processing, sensorimotor transformation and cognition. Novel smooth pursuit tasks and quantitative measurement techniques can help unravel the different smooth pursuit components and complex neural systems involved in its control. The maintenance of smooth pursuit is driven by a combination of the prediction of target velocity and visual feedback about performance quality, thus a combination of retinal and extraretinal information that has to be integrated in various networks. Different models of smooth pursuit with specific in- and output parameters have been developed for a better understanding of the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms and to make quantitative predictions that can be tested in experiments. Functional brain imaging and neurophysiological studies have defined motion sensitive visual area V5, frontal (FEF) and supplementary (SEF) eye fields as core cortical smooth pursuit regions. In addition, a dense neural network is involved in the adjustment of an optimal smooth pursuit response by integrating also extraretinal information. These networks facilitate interaction of the smooth pursuit system with multiple other visual and non-visual sensorimotor systems on the cortical and subcortical level. Future studies with fMRI advanced techniques (e.g., event-related fMRI) promise to provide an insight into how smooth pursuit eye movements are linked to specific brain activation. Applying this approach to neurological and also mental illness can reveal distinct disturbances within neural networks being present in these disorders and also the impact of medication on this circuitry. 相似文献

Psychological tests often involve item clusters that are designed to solicit responses to behavioral stimuli. The dependency between individual responses within clusters beyond that which can be explained by the underlying trait sometimes reveals structures that are of substantive interest. The paper describes two general classes of models for this type of locally dependent responses. Specifically, the models include a generalized log-linear representation and a hybrid parameterization model for polytomous data. A compact matrix notation designed to succinctly represent the system of complex multivariate polytomous responses is presented. The matrix representation creates the necessary formulation for the locally dependent kernel for polytomous item responses. Using polytomous data from an inventory of hostility, we provide illustrations as to how the locally dependent models can be used in psychological measurement. 相似文献

We propose an alternative method to partial least squares for path analysis with components, called generalized structured component analysis. The proposed method replaces factors by exact linear combinations of observed variables. It employs a well-defined least squares criterion to estimate model parameters. As a result, the proposed method avoids the principal limitation of partial least squares (i.e., the lack of a global optimization procedure) while fully retaining all the advantages of partial least squares (e.g., less restricted distributional assumptions and no improper solutions). The method is also versatile enough to capture complex relationships among variables, including higher-order components and multi-group comparisons. Quantitative analysis of finger motion coordination in hand manipulative and gestic acts 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
This article reports an experimental study that aimed to quantitatively analyze motion coordination patterns across digits 2-5 (index to little finger), and examine the kinematic synergies during manipulative and gestic acts. Twenty-eight subjects (14 males and 14 females) performed two types of tasks, both right-handed: (1) cylinder-grasping that involved concurrent voluntary flexion of digits 2-5, and (2) voluntary flexion of individual fingers from digit 2 to 5 (i.e., one at a time). A five-camera opto-electronic motion capture system measured trajectories of 21 miniature reflective markers strategically placed on the dorsal surface landmarks of the hand. Joint angular profiles for 12 involved flexion-extension degrees of freedom (DOF's) were derived from the measured coordinates of surface markers. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to examine the temporal covariation between joint angles. A mathematical modeling procedure, based on hyperbolic tangent functions, characterized the sigmoidal shaped angular profiles with four kinematically meaningful parameters. The PCA results showed that for all the movement trials (n = 280), two principal components accounted for at least 98% of the variance. The angular profiles (n = 2464) were accurately characterized, with the mean (+/-SD) coefficient of determination (R2) and root-mean-square-error (RMSE) being 0.95 (+/-0.12) and 1.03 degrees (+/-0.82 degrees ), respectively. The resulting parameters which quantified both the spatial and temporal aspects of angular profiles revealed stereotypical patterns including a predominant (87% of all trials) proximal-to-distal flexion sequence and characteristic interdependence--involuntary joint flexion induced by the voluntarily flexed joint. The principal components' weights and the kinematic parameters also exhibited qualitatively similar variation patterns. Motor control interpretations and new insights regarding the underlying synergistic mechanisms, particularly in relation to previous findings on force synergies, are discussed. 相似文献
