To counter confusion about the term ‘mentor’, and address concerns about the scarcity of mentoring, I argue for an “honorific”
definition, according to which a mentor is virtuous like a saint or hero. Given the unbounded commitment of mentors, mentoring
relationships must be voluntary. In contrast, the role of advisor can be specified, mandated, and monitored. I argue that
departments and research groups have a moral responsibility to devise a system of roles and structures to meet graduate students’
and postdoctoral fellows’ needs for information and advice.

Some philosophers argue that the thesis of content externalism, according to which the contents of a subject’s thoughts are
in part individuated by environmental factors, threatens the standard idea that a subject can know the contents of her thoughts
without empirical investigation. It is typically assumed, however, that this thesis does not threaten another common idea
about privileged access: that a subject can know the phenomenal character of her experience–its “what it’s like” aspect–without
empirical investigation. That is, even if content externalism is true and does imply that a subject cannot know without empirical
investigation the contents of some of her thoughts (e.g., her thoughts about water), surely she can know without empirical
investigation what it’s like for her to be having whatever experience she is having. I argue that if content externalism threatens
privileged access to content (I do not discuss whether it does), then it also threatens privileged access to phenomenal character.
My argument does not involve claiming that phenomenal character is itself externally individuated. Rather, it depends on two
other claims: (1) that introspective access to phenomenal character is conceptual; and (2) that standard arguments for content
externalism suggest that some phenomenal concepts are externally individuated. 相似文献

通过两个实验探索部件的语音信息在人造汉字判断过程中的作用。实验一通过操纵部件的独立性和部件位置的合法性分别探讨部件语音信息和位置信息对于人造字判断的影响。结果发现,与部件不独立的假字相比,判断部件独立的假字需要更长的时间,正确率也更低;但是部件的独立性并不影响对非字的判断。实验二通过控制部件本身是否发音和部件是否能做真字的声旁这两个因素,发现上述两个语音因素均影响假字的判断:和部件本身不能发音的假字相比,判断部件本身能发音的假字反应时更长,正确率更低;和部件不能做声旁的假字相比,判断部件能做声旁的假字反应时更长,正确率更低。结果还发现部件所包含的语音信息越多,假字判断的正确率就越低。在最后的讨论部分,根据实验结果构建了一个关于识别人造字和低频字的认知加工模型。 相似文献

In The Law of Peoples John Rawls gives a list of eight principles for the law of peoples. I argue that the force of the principles depends in large
part upon their being lexically ordered, and I attempt such an ordering. However, the lexically ordered list makes it clear
that the duty of non-intervention obtains only after the duty to honor human rights is satisfied. Also, I point to certain
“practical” difficulties with intervention on behalf of human rights. Rawls writes that additional principles are needed,
and I make two suggestions. I conclude that the problems arising from intervention and the need for additional principles
show that the “second Original Position” is like the first Original Position: both involve, Rawls notwithstanding, the selection

NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) refers to an oppositional attitude from local residents against some risk generating facility that
they have been chosen to host either by government or industry. The attitude is claimed to be characteristic of someone who
is positive to a facility but who wants someone else to be its host. Since siting cannot be provided if everyone has this
attitude, society ends up in a worse situation. The attitude is claimed to be egoistic and irrational. Here it is argued that
the NIMBY critique rests on questionable assumptions about the rightness of weighing total benefit against total cost. This
weighing-principle will sometimes have to yield so that the rights of individuals can be acknowledged.

This is a paper about the difficulties we as analysts get into when we find that a patient has activated something in our unconscious which we cannot resolve in our work with them. Fordham described at the end of his life, in a number of papers, his difficulties and discomfort at not being able to resolve an impasse with one of his patients. From the conversations we had about this situation I knew this caused them both a lot of pain. After Fordham's death his former patient consulted me. Arising from these consultations I describe how I have understood the impasse to have arisen between Fordham and his patient. This paper links character and clinical interests, personality and impasse, developmental failures and defences of the self. It is a personal statement in which I have struggled to represent the meaning in the pain these two men suffered during their analytic engagement, which lasted more than ten years. The author argues that one of the main functions of perverse relatedness is to induce the analyst into becoming the patient's unconscious accomplice in a “perverse pact” against the analytic work aimed at disavowing intolerable aspects of reality. The intense power of collusive induction in perverse relating leads the analyst to participate in transference‐countertransference enactments and to the crystallization of a silent and chronic unconscious collusion between the patient and analyst in the analytic field, stagnating the process (bastion; Baranger and Baranger). The author claims that analysis of perverse pathology should not be limited to interpretation of the patient's intrapsychic functioning but should also focus on the information obtained by the analyst through his participation in collusive enactments; the analyst should also take a “second look” at the analytic “field” to detect underlying bastions. The author reviews the main psychoanalytic contributions that have clarified the phenomenon of collusive induction in perverse relating and as an illustration, describes the analysis of a man with a perverse character; in this patient, one of the main functions of his perverse relatedness was to induce the analyst to become an accomplice in his disavowal of his terror of death. The author highlights the influence of death anxiety in the bastions that develop in the treatment of perverse patients. 相似文献

This paper presents a re‐evaluation of Kris's personal myth. The notion has been used rather sparingly despite the Delphi Symposium in 1984 on the question of its clinical usefulness. After framing the notion of myth, some difficulties related to the question are identified. A clinical vignette exemplifies some of the ambiguities in its definition but stresses its clinical relevance. A discussion expands on these situations so as to propose three various aspects of personal myths to account for the two variants identified by Kris. The actualization of the underlying fantasy in the character organization is a third form and the technical aspect associated with it is reviewed from a new perspective. The family romance is revisited to reassess its role as the basis of the personal myth in the face of studies favouring an earlier development of the myth. 相似文献
