In this paper I explore Erik Erikson's revisions of Freudian thought and reasons for his conceptual departure. I show Erikson
as the second stage psychoanalytic theorist who shifted thought upward in consciousness, outward to the social world, and
forward throughout the complete life span. I explore Erikson's dispute of Freud's reductionism and predeterminism, and illustrate
Erikson's movement afield of a model of mental illness, fragmentation, and negation. I explore Erikson's view that the social
world is both inside and outside the psyche, rather than solely external to the person as Freud had held. Addressed is Erikson's conversion of Freud's
notions of adult morality to a developmental view of the adult as a potentially moral–ethical person, and Erikson's revision
of Freud's concepts of the potentially rational adult to a view of the adult with rational and emotional attributes.
These words are Erikson's (1975, p. 39) terms for his theoretical focus. Erikson said that he had felt compelled to alter
Freudian views, for the second stage psychoanalytic thought in which he participated required a focus on healthy development
instead of attention to deviations from health. Such thought also required analysis of the importance of consciousness and
of engagement in the social world, as well as a theory of adult development that extends throughout the mature years to chart
the person's psychosocial growth and the development of principled behavior. To Erikson, Freud's views were reductionistic
due, in part, to their placement within Newtonian and Darwinian thought. Further, Freud's thought was based on the assumption
of an invariably moral person, and of the human who would eventually rise above the irrational powers that he found to govern
the self. In this paper, I take up these points. I look to Erikson's revisions of Freudian thought, emphasizing the ways in
which he made us think differently about psychological life and about adults in their ongoing development. This synthesis
adheres to the points Erikson himself made about his departure from Freud, thoughts that appear in Erikson's (1987b) Harvard
notes and marginalia, in his audiotapes, and in portions of his published writings. 相似文献

Little has been written about how genetic counseling supervisors can help students develop psychosocial skills in their clinical rotations. The authors describe several approaches supervisors can use, ranging from preventive measures (e.g., normalizing anxiety), to skill-enhancing interventions (e.g., modeling and thinking aloud), to more direct approaches (e.g., immediacy, confrontation) that may be necessary for students who are reluctant, or even resistant, to using psychosocial skills with their clients. 相似文献

Using prospective longitudinal data from the Christchurch Health and Development Study, this paper examined the relationship between teacher reported peer relationship problems at age 9 and psychosocial adjustment in late adolescence. Results showed that, by age 18, children with high rates of early peer relationship problems were at increased risk of externalizing behavior problems such as criminal offending and substance abuse, but were not at increased risk of anxiety disorder or major depression. Subsequent analyses revealed that these associations were largely explained by the effects of child and family factors associated with both early peer relationship problems and later adjustment. The most influential variable in explaining associations between peer relationship problems and later adjustment was the extent of children's early conduct problems. These results suggest that reported associations between early peer problems and later adjustment are noncausal, and appear to reflect underlying continuities in behavioral adjustment. 相似文献

Selecting suitable candidates for liver transplantation is the most challenging task of pre-transplant evaluation. In addition to somatic assessment, psychosocial evaluation has been proven important in identifying patients at high risk of potential failure. The Transplant Evaluation Rating Scale (TERS) is a widely used rating instrument for the assessment of psychosocial risk factors before liver transplantation. The aim of this study was to explore the predictive value of TERS for mortality in liver transplant patients before and after transplantation. The medical records of patients referred for psychiatric evaluation before liver transplantation between 2003 –2013 were analysed. Administering TERS was part of the pre-transplant evaluation. The TERS scores of patients who died before and after transplantation were compared with those who survived following transplantation. One hundred and sixteen patients were referred for pre-transplant psychiatric evaluation. Patients with successful liver transplants scored significantly lower on TERS than those who died before transplantation (30.65 ± 6.06 vs. 34.75 ± 8.25, p = .031). Patients who died after transplantation scored significantly better on TERS than those who died before transplantation (28.79 ± 2.81 vs. 34.75 ± 8.25, p = .003). There was no significant difference between the deceased and surviving transplanted patients’ TERS scores (28.79 ± 2.81 vs. 31.19 ± 6.66, p = .365). TERS appears to be a suitable rating instrument to help select candidates who have higher chance to survive prior to transplantation but it could not predict post-transplant mortality. 相似文献

Workplace bullying is a severe workplace stressor that affects both employees and organizations. Despite a wealth of research of the prevalence of workplace bullying and its correlates, little research has been done on the process of bullying. In a qualitative study, based on the grounded theory approach, we examine the role of psychosocial safety climate (PSC) in influencing employees’ coping strategies and ultimately the escalation of bullying. Interviews were conducted with 20 Malaysian workers from various organizational settings, who also completed a 12-item PSC scale. The analysis revealed that coping strategies took the form of a modified exit-voice-loyalty-neglect (EVLN) model, whereby acquiescence replaced loyalty in the matrix. In turn, five escalation patterns of bullying were identified, linked to the coping options used by employees. We found that employees tended to voice in high PSC contexts, which led to swift resolution of bullying. In low PSC contexts, employees tended to neglect or acquiesce before exiting the organization because the bullying remained unresolved, which was revealed in four different trajectories of escalation without resolution. These results emphasize the influence of the organizational climate for psychosocial safety in shaping the coping options available to bullied workers, and the likely success of these strategies. 相似文献

The present study examines the psychosocial consequences of emotion suppression and the moderating effect of social context in the link between emotion suppression and psychosocial functioning with two samples of Chinese undergraduate students. Suppression of happiness and sadness in five social contexts (with family members, close friends, classmates, teachers and strangers) and psychosocial functioning were investigated. The results indicate that the general level of happiness suppression negatively predicted individuals' psychosocial functioning, while sadness suppression was positively associated with psychosocial functioning. The moderating effect of social context was significant in the association between happiness suppression and psychosocial functioning, while its moderating effect was not significant for sadness. Moreover, the context differentiation (CD) of happiness suppression positively predicted psychosocial functioning, while the effect of CD of sadness suppression was not significant. The results of the present study extend the existing literature by suggesting the importance of taking social context and the specific type of emotion into account when examining the psychosocial adaptation of emotion suppression. New findings were also added to understand the effects of emotion suppression on psychosocial functioning for Chinese people. In the Chinese cultural context, which emphasizes regulating one's behaviours based on situational requirements, low levels of happiness suppression and high levels of sadness suppression appeared to be a psychosocially adaptive emotional display pattern. 相似文献

This paper explores the constraints to innovative, creative and reflexive careers counselling in an uncertain neo-liberal world. We draw on previously reported research into practitioners’ use of a narrative model for career counselling interviews in England and a Europe-wide auto/biographical narrative study of non-traditional learners in universities. The latter draws on a number of narrative interviews with an asylum seeker, to debate whether such a way of working with people, ‘in a clinical style’, offers contextualised insight into people's struggles to construct a career and a methodology for doing so. The paper also examines the difficulties of creating a ‘good enough’ professional, psychosocial space for experimentation with creative approaches in a marketised guidance world, where more is expected from less. 相似文献
