The behavioural patterns of juvenile white‐seabream suggest that asymmetry in residence is an important factor governing the outcome of contest between individuals of this species. Asymmetries due to resident status had strong effects on agonistic behaviour, with asymmetries in body sizes producing weaker effects. Resident fish won all the combats against intruders of lower or similar length. However, when the intruder was larger than the residents (higher than 5% in length and 20% in weight), the percentage of combats won by the residents decreased to 85.7%. There was a significant correlation between fight intensity and size asymmetry in favour of the resident fish. The resident fish was more aggressive and persistent in attacks, and contests were more intense when the size of the intruder was greater. During agonistic interactions, the frontal attacks and lateral displays were more frequent when the intruders were similar or larger than residents. Attacks to the flanks and chases were more frequent in pairs where the intruders were smaller. Aggr. Behav. 25:297–303, 1999.

The purpose of this study was to establish a relation between agonistic behavior, gonadal hormones, and their receptorial capacity at the central level. Male rabbits were observed in seminatural conditions and three components of their agonistic behavior were recorded: follow, attack, and chase. The three behaviors were mutually correlated and clearly differed among the four members of each group. Within the social group, one rabbit was agonistically more active than the others and his supremacy was associated with an increased level of peripheral testosterone and higher estradiol binding in the hypothalamus. On the whole, the values of the hypothalamic estradiol binding were positively correlated with the behaviors. The results show that, in the male rabbit, agonistic activity is associated with changes in testosterone concentration and in the binding at the central level of its aromatized metabolite estradiol. Although postpartum aggression is primarily studied in laboratory mice and rats, it is unclear how the two species compare in terms of the factors associated with peak levels of aggressive behavior. Using the same experimental protocol, we assessed the relative effect of intruder sex and time since parturition on the frequency of maternal aggression in Long-Evans rats and CFW mice. Females were studied for 2 consecutive cycles of pregnancy and lactation. During the first lactation, aggression was tested 2 times per week for 3 weeks in order to select animals that attacked at least once. During the second lactation, both pup care and aggressive behavior were assessed in detail. Testing occurred twice in each lactation week, with postpartum days 1–7, 8–14, and 15–21 considered weeks 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Maternal behavior towards 3 pups was observed for 5 minutes, followed by a confrontation with an intruder. Lactating females encountered female intruders once per week, and male intruders in the alternate weekly test. The same behaviors were measured in the 2 species, except for the tail rattle exhibited by mice and the aggressive posture shown by rats. Lactating rats and mice show similar decreases in pup care behavior as lactation progresses in time; yet the factors associated with peak levels of aggression differ between species. In Long-Evans rats, female intruders receive more attacks, threats, and aggressive postures than males. Frequency of attack bite and sideways threat declines in each passing week of lactation. Lactating mice are more aggressive toward male intruders throughout the lactation period. Mice still attack and threaten during the third week of lactation, but less often in comparison to the first week. Therefore, peak levels of aggression vary in mice and rats both as a function of intruder sex and lactation week.

Videotapes of territorial confilicts between rock wallabies, Petrogale assimilis, were analysed by means of sequential and frequency analysis. P. assimilis differes from most species of macropodoids in that they form long-lasting pair-bonds, and both partners of a pair defend a common territory within a colony. The video-analysis reveals differences between fights of P. assimilis and the “typical” pattern of macropod fighting. Most conflicts are solved by display. Even in actual fighting, few elements of “physical aggression,” such as biting or kicking, etc., are evident, and there is no winner/loser typical frequency difference of any elements. Many conflicts end as a draw. These differences are similar to differences between fighting in territory holders of small monoganous African can antelopes and those of other, more polygynous bovid.

Play fighting in the Syrian Golden hamster Mesocricetus auratus can be distinguished from serious fighting by the targets attacked in each case. In play fighting, the animals attack and defend the cheeks and cheek pouches, whereas in serious fighting they attack and defend the rump and lower flanks. Since play typically involves the use of behaviors borrowed from other functional contexts, this paper investigates the origin of the cheek target during play fighting. Comparison of resident-intruder serious fighting with awake and anesthetized intruders does not reveal the cheek to be an inhibited target for serious attack. Similarly, analysis of social investigation and allog-rooming, while revealing the ears to be important targets, do not show the cheeks to be targets in these behaviors. Sniffing, licking, and nibbling of the cheek area appear to occur mainly during sexual encounters by males. This area, seemingly a sexual target, may be the one utilized during play fighting.

The data on agonistic behavior of muroid rodents that have been obtained from field observations and laboratory experiments are reviewed and compared in terms of a hypothetical model of the neural organization of these behaviors. The neural model has been presented elsewhere and is used here only as a way to organize the data. The data are organized in terms of four hypothetical motivational systems: Offense, defense, submission, and patrol/marking. The various behaviors are considered as motor patterns and are compared and analyzed in terms of the proposed motivating, releasing, and directing stimuli of the motivational systems. Interactions and overlaps between the motivational systems are also considered. It is concluded that the organization of agonistic behavior may be similar across all species of muroid rodents. Generalizations are complicated by the profound effects of ontogenetic factors. Four categories of behaviors differ from species to species: Scent-marking, submissive behaviors, threat behaviors, and alarm signals. The possible phylogenetic and ontogenetic factors in these differences are considered.

Two longitudinal studies were conducted to quantify the social behaviors exhibited by both male and female Long-Evans rats from the immediate postweaning period until young adulthood. In Experiment 1, male sibling pairs engaged in a high level of play fighting during the early juvenile period but such activity declined to a level significantly lower than that of female and mixed-sex pairs after 54 days of age. In Experiment 2, social exchanges during maturation were examined during the presence and absence of the piloerection response in an effort to distinguish play fighting from agonistic interactions. In male pairs, piloerection was rarely seen before 55–75 days of age but thereafter occurred with increasing frequency especially among dominant males. Furthermore, subordinate males retreated from their dominant partners and remained in an escape chamber for a significant amount of time only during encounters involving the exhibition of piloerection. This finding suggests that piloerection can be useful in identifying play and aggressive interactions. In female and heterosexual pairs, piloerection was observed infrequently during social encounters occurring throughout maturation. In addition, when given the opportunity to escape, females were less likely to retreat from play activity if their partner was another female than a male.

This paper reviews the evidence that social disaggregation is a major cause of destructive violence in non-human animal societies. The multifactorial theory of agonistic behavior is modified into a polysystemic theory which relates factors on each level to each other in an integrated model. As a result, it is suggested that disaggregation of systems on any level may lead to maladaptive violence. On theoretical grounds it is concluded that disaggregations of ecosystems and social systems are more probable and hence more dangerous than those of physiological and genetic systems. Applications of these findings to human affairs are discussed, both as explanations and as guides to positive action.
