The wrong side of history

Psychoanalysis (including analytical psychology), once a pioneering and forward‐looking movement of the early 20^th century has now become a conservative backward‐looking ‘tradition’. After considering some of the internal problems associated with this historical change such as idealization and tribalism, some ways forward are suggested – a focus on clinical excellence as practical craft, openness to the unknown and engagement with others beyond the confines of private practice.     

Internetchatgruppen in Psychotherapie und Psychosomatik

Zusammenfassung  In Zusammenarbeit mit der Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) und der Panorama-Fachklinik für Psychosomatik, Psychotherapeutische Medizin und Naturheilverfahren Scheidegg/Allgäu hat die Forschungsstelle für Psychotherapie das Projekt Internetbrücke initiiert. Die Patienten erhielten im Anschluss an ihre stationäre Behandlung das Angebot, für 12–15 Wochen an einer Gruppe teilzunehmen, die sich in einem speziell eingerichteten Chatraum wöchentlich traf. Das Projekt hatte die Ziele: (a) eine geeignete Internetumgebung für eine vertrauliche Kommunikation aufzubauen und deren Praktikabilität zu testen sowie (b) die Akzeptanz durch die Patienten und die Wirksamkeit zu evaluieren. Zur Evaluation wurde eine prospektive kontrollierte Studie durchgeführt. Chatteilnehmer (n=114) wurden mit einer gematchten Vergleichsgruppe (n=114) hinsichtlich ihres Gesundheitszustands ein halbes Jahr nach der Klinikentlassung verglichen. Die Technik erwies sich als robust und nutzerfreundlich. Das Angebot wurde sehr positiv von den Patienten aufgenommen; dies drückte sich u. a. in der niedrigen Abbruchrate (9,4%) und der hohen Akzeptanz (83,7% der Chatteilnehmer hielten eine Internetbrücke für sinnvoll) aus. Die Chatteilnehmer konnten die während der stationären Behandlung erreichten positiven Entwicklungen – gemessen mit dem globalen Kriterium der Stuttgart-Heidelberger Qualitätssicherung – besser erhalten als die Vergleichsgruppe (p<0,05). Es zeigten sich Vorteile für die Chatteilnehmer im Hinblick auf das psychische Befinden, während die Unterschiede im körperlichen Befinden eher gering waren. Die Konsequenzen für die psychosoziale Versorgung werden diskutiert.

Worship as a Revelation. The Past,Present and Future of Catholic Liturgy

Unitatis Redintegratio (UR), the Decree on Ecumenism of the Second Vatican Council, was both the outcome and instrument of ecumenical engagement between Anglicans and Roman Catholics, and continues to have a formative influence on their dialogue. In the lead-up to the Council, personal contacts between Church of England leaders and the nascent Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity played a significant part in a change of atmosphere towards other Christian traditions at the Vatican. UR notes the ‘special place’ which the Anglican Communion holds in the communion of churches: the 1966 meeting in Rome between Archbishop of Canterbury Michael Ramsey and Pope Paul VI would lead to The Malta Report (1968) and the Anglican–Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC). The ‘Principles of Dialogue’ set out in UR – avoiding polemical language; integrating spiritual and academic learning; expounding positions clearly, and committed openness – are affirmed in the light of the experience of ARCIC. The Agreed Statements of ARCIC I and II, focused around the motif of koinonia, are assessed in view of the topics for dialogue listed in UR: Christology; Ecclesiology (including the Blessed Virgin Mary); Sacred Scripture; Life in Christ in communion; Teaching on sacraments and ministry; and Christian personal, family, liturgical and social life. The significance of eschatology in relation to unity in Christ is highlighted, both with reference to Anglican difficulties about gender relations and authority, and to the three-fold use of ‘complete’ in UR. What might it mean for ecumenical dialogue, and ecclesial relationships, to work from the future backwards rather than just from the past forwards – i.e. in terms of faith rather than sight?     

Opportunities of online analysis1

The question of whether tele-analysis is an acceptable way of conducting analysis has been discussed since it has become available. Merchant (2016) and others concluded that ‘the essentials of a genuine analytic process are not necessarily precluded’ (p. 1). In this paper, the author goes a step further and examines potential advantages of tele-analysis. There may be benefits for patients with a history of physical or sexual abuse who value the distance. The potential for a ‘safe place’ for work with erotic transference is also examined. In a further section the author is interested in allowing the analyst the freedom to practise in an authentic way, congruent with their personality. Also explored is the concept of the interactive field including the technological medium, which is subject to synchronistic events. Finally, the author gives examples of a deep connection between patient and analyst which came about despite the physical distance.     

Some Questions Raised by the Practice of Online Analysis1

In this paper the author explores some of the issues raised by the practice of online analysis. In particular, he emphasizes the difference between the setting and the frame and proposes a theoretical approach of the latter as emerging within the transferential dynamic.     

Dissociations in aphasia: A case report

This paper is a case study of an aphasic patient who displays two interesting characteristics, namely, (1) a dissociation between his oral and written disorders (i.e., oral Wernicke vs. written Broca); (2) an agraphia-alexia syndrome in which the picturability of the entities referred to by words plays an important role. Some of the characteristics shown by this patient have been well described concerning reading but never concerning writing. This second aspect is particularly emphasized.     

Effects of a delay-reinforcement procedure on performance under IRT>t schedules

Water-deprived rats were studied under a compound schedule that prescribed that responses terminating interresponse times (IRTs) greater than a fixed value t₁ (IRT > t₁ component schedule) initiated a delay of reinforcement interval t₂, at the end of which water was presented if the subject did not respond ( > t₂ component schedule). If the subject responded before the t₂ interval elapsed, the IRT > t₁ component schedule was re-initiated and water was not presented. The IRT > t₁ and > t₂ component schedules were not differentially correlated with distinctive stimuli. Rate of responding during the IRT > t₁ component decreased as a function of the value of t₂. The magnitude of the decreases in response rate appeared to be proportional to the subject's rate under the IRT > t schedule with no delay of reinforcement (t₂ = 0 sec). The effects were independent of the parameter value of the IRT > t₁ component schedule and of the rate of reinforcement. The results suggested that “efficiency” of performance under IRT > t schedules can be increased by appropriately arranging brief delays of reinforcement.     

Binary choice reaction time as a criterion of motor equivalence

In a binary choice situation the two alternative movements may vary in the degree in which they are equivalent in respect to controlling processes and/or structures. With a higher degree of motor equivalence a shorter RT is to be expected. A series of five experiments shows that a movement of a finger of one hand has a shorter latency if the alternative movement with the other hand is of the same form than in case of different forms. There is no evidence of corrsponding effect of using the same or different fingers with both hands. These results indicate that programming of the form of a movement is at least partly independent of the muscles involved in movement execution.     

Analytical competence and language impairment in aphasia

Matched groups of Broca's and Wernicke's aphasics, brain-damaged patients without aphasia and chronic schizophrenics were tested in a nonverbal matching task where the subject had to indicate which of two pictures was more closely linked to a clue picture. Eight additional verbal and nonverbal reference tasks were administered. Both aphasic groups performed worse than brain-damaged controls when the identification of individual attributes or actions shared by clue and referent was required, but were unimpaired when the two had a set of referential-situational associations in common. Factor analyses resulted for both groups in two factors, one of which represents general Language Impairment. For the Broca's aphasics this factor was closely related to general organic deficit as measured by the Trail Making Test; for the Wernicke's aphasics it was associated with tasks which might be considered illustrative of analytical competence in isolating and comparing individual features of objects or concepts.
