Are absolute frequencies,relative frequencies,or both effective in reducing cognitive biases?

Biases in probabilistic reasoning are affected by alterations in the presentation of judgment tasks. In our experiments, students made likelihood judgments that an event was produced by various causes. These judgments were made in terms of probability, relative frequency or absolute frequency on a full or a pruned list of causes. When they had little personal experience of the event (causes of death), the pruning bias was smaller with relative frequencies than with absolute frequencies or probabilities. When they had more personal experience of the event (missing a lecture), the bias was less with both types of frequency than with probability but still lowest with relative frequency. We suggest that likelihood information is usually stored as relative frequencies when it has been obtained from public sources but that it is based on event counts when it is derived from personal experience. Ethnoracial comparisons in anxiety and depression outcomes among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander college students

We explored differences in distress scores at intake as well as the change in anxiety and depression scores over the course of 12 therapy sessions for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) college students. Data were collected from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health (N = 256,242). Results support the notion that NHPI college students experience anxiety and depression in therapy differently from other ethnic groups with moderate-to-large magnitudes of effect.     

Influence de la composition de la fratrie sur les pratiques éducatives parentales déclarées et sur la représentation de l'éducation chez les préadolescents

The aim of our study is to analyze the influence of the make up of the siblings on the parents' educational practices and also on the meaning of education to preadolescents. The results gathered from a sample of 88 preadolescents and their mothers show a difference of parental educational practices according to the make up of the siblings (relaxation of the practices with the youngest). The study of the meaning of education to preadolescents shows that only children are the most in accordance with their mothers. Children from large families imagine a future education further from mothers' educational practices.     

Peligros de la modificación de conducta en el tratamiento de la anorexia nerviosa

RESUMEN

En los últimos años se ha señalado, de forma excesiva, la eficacia de la modificación de conducta en el tratamiento de la anorexia nerviosa. Se ha supuesto, de forma errónea, que la imposición de una mejoría de la emaciación, el síntoma más llamativo, es un tratamiento adecuado para este trastorno tan grave y complejo. Los resultados que se han publicado adolecen de falta de seguimiento. En estos pacientes, este método de tratamientos les llevó a un empeoramiento de su estado. A pesar de conseguir un aumento de peso pasajero, la modificación de conducta debe considerarse como potencialmente dañina en la anorexia nerviosa. En este artículo se aporta información sobre los efectos perjudiciales de los pacientes tratados con este método. Sus historias ilustran que los métodos de modificación de conducta no son sólo peligrosos en potencia, sino en la realidad.
