Counselling psychology in the United Kingdom

Counselling psychology within the UK has grown over the last three decades, adapting to many changes in the field of applied psychology, whilst remaining true to its core values and humanistic origins. The identity of counselling psychology is strongly rooted in a relational stance and applied psychology, where attention to psychological formulation is given to improve psychological functioning and well-being. This article outlines a brief history of counselling psychology in the UK, the training process, credentialing and looks at some important challenges and future directions for counselling psychology in the UK. A proportion of the members from the British Psychological Society’s division of counselling psychology (DCoP, N = 148) took part in the study. Participants provided demographic, training, employment, workplace and career pathway information obtained through an online questionnaire distributed to all DCoP members. On the whole, DCoP members are working in a variety of areas within the UK and the findings of this article contribute to the international study comparing counselling psychology across the globe.

通过对274位农民工(其中犯罪农民工134人,普通农民工140人)总体幸福感和社会支持的问卷调查及比较,得出以下结论:(1)农民工的总体幸福感与社会支持的高低对其犯罪有着显著性影响。(2)文化层次在农民工犯罪上体现出明显影响,呈现出低学历犯罪人数远高于较高学历的局势。(3)犯罪农民工的总体幸福感与社会支持总体及其各因子之间具有显著性相关。

儒学与当代社会的双向互动是指儒学与当代社会的双向审视、双向批判、双向参与。这一问题对儒学言 ,是能否在当代社会生存与发展和如何生存与发展的问题 ,对当代社会言 ,是如何汲取儒家的智慧走向人文化成的问题。双向互动不是封闭的静态系统 ,而是动态的开放系统 ,重不在互动的效果 ,而是互动的过程。儒学借助与当代社会的互动而焕发出新的生命与活力 ,当代社会因儒学的参与而更加健全、完善。     

Hindu and Christian Creationism: "Transposed Passages" in the Geological Book of Life

Antievolution arguments of Christian and Hindu creationists often critique Darwin's metaphor of the geological record as an ill-preserved book of life, while highlighting the problem of anomalous fossils. For instance, Bible-based young-Earth creationists point to anomalous humanlike prints alongside authenticated dinosaur tracks to argue for the creation of all life some few thousand years ago. But Vedic-based ancient-hominid creationists view the same sort of evidence as indicating the existence of all species, including the hominids, billions of years ago. I examine the roots of this Hindu Vedic creationism and its recent elaboration among scientifically minded members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Similarities in the methods and rhetorical strategies of the two creationist groups are considered, as well as the underlying motives that have brought together such otherwise disparate religious worldviews.     

Vanda Shrenger Weiss – the Croatian pioneer between two worlds: Her role in the birth of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society (SPI)

In this paper the author sheds light on Vanda Shrenger Weiss, a forgotten pioneer of the international psychoanalytic movement. Vanda Shrenger was born into a large Jewish family in Croatia (1892), and her life was thoroughly intertwined with the great tragedies of European history: the First World War, the anti‐Semitic persecution within Eastern Europe, which entailed the decimation of her extended family in Croatia. Finally, the introduction of fascist laws in Italy led to her and her husband – Edoardo Weiss, the founder of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society – seeking refuge in the United States of America. During her time spent in Italy (1919–39), Vanda Shrenger, doctor and paediatrician, dedicated herself to psychoanalysis. She played a crucial part in the reconstruction of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society (SPI), whilst also being a founding member of the Rivista Italiana di Psicoanalisi (Rome, 1932). Vanda was the first woman to be a member of the SPI as well as to present a paper for it. This insightful and extensive analysis relating to this pioneer of the psychoanalytic world, has been meticulously accomplished by use of a combination of original archival materials, along with access to previously unpublished documents and personal details, kindly made available to the author by Marianna, the daughter of Vanda and Edoardo Weiss, who still lives in the United States today.     

Silent No Longer

This article, arising from the work of the Council for World Mission's Legacies of Slavery project, investigates the historical roots of racism present in the work of the London Missionary Society (LMS). It offers an analysis of the ways in which a missionary society colluded with Empire in constructing a racist hierarchy that it imposed on White people at home in the United Kingdom as much as it did on African and African descendant peoples. It acknowledges the personal and structural benefits that the LMS and its officers made from enslavement and their efforts to silence calls for emancipation, and offers a class and gender perspective on the forces shaping this distinctively British organization.     

Democracy in a Multireligious and Cultural Setting: The Nigerian Context

Nigeria is indeed a typical pluralistic society with innumerable differences in culture, ethnicity, tribe, religion, and class. Yet there exists in Nigeria certain dominant cultures, ethnic nationalities, religions, and classes. In some parts of the country the influence of a dominant culture or ethnic group is more pronounced than in others. This paper is therefore an attempt to look into our pluralism and see how it can enhance the development and promotion of democracy in the country. This paper will address this topic by considering a working definition of democracy and how it is understood and applied in Nigeria; the ethnoreligious politics in Nigeria; postmodernism, democracy, and pluralism in Nigerian society; and the role of religious leaders in the survival of democracy in Nigeria.     

The origins of ISRA: Notes from the archives of the international society for research on aggression

A synoptic history of the founding of the International Society for Research on Aggression (ISRA) and its early administrative history is presented on the basis of documents in the archives of the Society. Details are given regarding the organizing sessions in Tokyo (1972), the preparation of its Constitution, the election of first officers, and the recruitment and growth of the membership roster. A list of ISRA presidents and the places of the biennial conferences during the first decade is appended.     

中国心理学会史百年新诠

经过文献查找,作者发现中华心理学会成立于1921年8月□日。中华心理学会成立之后,创办了亚洲第一份专业期刊《心理》杂志,在北京召开纪念会并留下合影,并陆续召开了几次学术演讲会。1927年学会停办。1937年1月中国心理学会在南京重新成立,半年后又再次停办。待到1949年之后中国心理学会才再次经过筹备,于1955年8月正式成立。1956 年 11 月《心理学报》创刊, 1966 年 5 月停刊。1977年11月,中国心理学会再次恢复活动,并走上正常发展的道路。作为学术共同体的中国心理学会,随着中国政治的动荡而起起伏伏。自1977年以来,中国心理学走上了健康而迅猛发展的道路,也必将成为国际心理学舞台上不可或缺的力量。     

Investigation concerning the possibility of rational ethics

Ethical behavior such as self‐sacrifice and striving for juistice—the natural striving for a general prosperity for humans—is not mainly learned but is carried by a natural altruism from one generation to the next. It is based on group (rather than individual) altruism which has concentrated on protection of the aged (as preservers of knowledge) and the young (as preservers of future generations).

It is proposed that the strongest possible nature form of community is the “amorisation community"—in effect, one in which love produces more love. A case is presented for the creation of a world scientific and cultural transformation based on the ethics of the “amorisation community.”
