Motion information available to different sensory modalities can interact at both perceptual and post-perceptual (i.e., decisional) stages of processing. However, to date, researchers have only been able to demonstrate the influence of one of these components at any given time, hence the relationship between them remains uncertain. We addressed the interplay between the perceptual and post-perceptual components of information processing by assessing their influence on performance within the same experimental paradigm. We used signal detection theory to discriminate changes in perceptual sensitivity (d') from shifts in response criterion (c) in performance on a detection (Experiment 1) and a classification (Experiment 2) task regarding the direction of auditory apparent motion streams presented in noise. In the critical conditions, a visual motion distractor moving either leftward or rightward was presented together with the auditory motion. The results demonstrated a significant decrease in sensitivity to the direction of the auditory targets in the crossmodal conditions as compared to the unimodal baseline conditions that was independent of the relative direction of the visual distractor. In addition, we also observed significant shifts in response criterion, which were dependent on the relative direction of the distractor apparent motion. These results support the view that the perceptual and decisional components involved in audiovisual interactions in motion processing can coexist but are largely independent of one another. 相似文献

The picture-word interference paradigm was used to shed new light on the debate concerning slow serial versus fast parallel activation of phonology in silent reading. Prereaders, beginning readers (Grades 1-4), and adults named pictures that had words printed on them. Words and pictures shared phonology either at the beginnings of words (e.g., DOLL-DOG) or at the ends of words (e.g., FOG-DOG). The results showed that phonological overlap between primes and targets facilitated picture naming. This facilitatory effect was present even in beginning readers. More important, from Grade 1 onward, end-related facilitation always was as strong as beginning-related facilitation. This result suggests that, from the beginning of reading, the implicit and automatic activation of phonological codes during silent reading is not serial but rather parallel. 相似文献

Sensitivity to second-order relational information (i.e., spatial relations among features such as the distance between eyes) is a vital part of achieving expertise with face processing. Prior research is unclear on whether infants are sensitive to second-order differences seen in typical human populations. In the current experiments, we examined whether infants are sensitive to changes in the space between the eyes and between the nose and the mouth that are within the normal range of variability in Caucasian female faces. In Experiment 1, 7-month-olds detected these changes in second-order relational information. Experiment 2 extended this finding to 5-month-olds and also found that infants detect second-order relations in upright faces but not in inverted faces, thereby exhibiting an inversion effect that has been considered to be a hallmark of second-order relational processing during adulthood. These results suggest that infants as young as 5 months are sensitive to second-order relational changes that are within the normal range of human variability. They also indicate that at least rudimentary aspects of face processing expertise are available early in life. 相似文献

Communicating genetic-risk information is fraught with difficulties, and there are no universally accepted guidelines for
clinical practice. In this paper, we suggest that information-processing models may offer some guidance for the communication
of genetic risk. The paper reviews selected literature from health and social psychology, including defensive reactions to
threatening health information, the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM) and Self Affirmation Theory. Ultimately, it presents
the Heuristic-Systematic Model (HSM) of information processing as a useful perspective from which to view genetic-risk communication.
Through our review of this literature, we identify some of the variables found to influence the systematic or heuristic processing
of risk information and note their relevance to genetic counseling contexts. We suggest that systematic information processing
is conducive to informed decision-making, as well as improved understanding of risk information. Clinical practice implications

The idea that intuition plays a basic role in moral knowledge and moral philosophy probably began in the eighteenth century.
British philosophers such as Anthony Shaftsbury, Francis Hutcheson, Thomas Reid, and later David Hume talk about a “moral
sense” that they place in John Locke’s theory of knowledge in terms of Lockean reflexive perceptions, while Richard Price
seeks a faculty by which we obtain our ideas of right and wrong. In the twentieth century intuitionism in moral philosophy
was revived by the works of G. E. Moore, H. A. Prichard, and W. D. Ross. These philosophers reject Kantian deontological ethics
and utilitarianism insisting that intuition is the only source of moral knowledge. Recently, there is a renewed interest in
intuition by philosophers doing meta-philosophy by reflecting on what philosophers do, and why they disagree. In this essay
we plan to take some of this recent literature on intuition and apply it to moral philosophy. We will proceed by (1) defining
a conception of intuition, (2) answering some skeptical challenges, (3) delimiting its target, and (4) arguing that intuition
is often a source of moral knowledge.

Research indicates that perceivers regulate information gain from their observation of ongoing behavior by varying the number
and kind of actions they identify as meaningful. Although numerous factors have been shown to induce variation in this behavior-perception
process, it is not currently known whether observers must consciously and intentionally initiate these changes. To address
this question, different observational goals (impression formation or memorization) were nonconsciously primed in participants
who then viewed and segmented a behavior sequence into meaningful actions. Although participants were unaware of its effects,
the priming manipulation led to quantitative and qualitative shifts in their perception of the behavior that were similar
to those found in a previous study in which observational goals were manipulated via explicit instructions. Importantly, these
shifts in perception, in turn, influenced evaluations of the observed actor and memory for her behavior. We conclude that
an act of will is not required for adjustments in behavior perception to be initiated, and, furthermore, that a full understanding
of social judgment cannot be achieved without examination of the behavior-perception process.

The role of temporal synchrony and syllable distinctiveness in preverbal infants’ learning of word-object relations was investigated. In Experiment 1, 7- and 8-month-olds (N = 64) were habituated under conditions where two similar-sounding syllables, /tah/ and /gah/, were spoken simultaneously with the motions of one of two sets of objects (synchronous) or out of phase with the motions (asynchronous). On test trials, 8-month-olds, but not 7-month-olds, showed learning of the relations in the synchronous condition but not in the asynchronous condition. Furthermore, in Experiment 2, following habituation to one of the synchronous syllable-object pairs, 7-month-olds (n = 8) discriminated the syllables and the objects. In Experiment 3, following habituation to two distinct syllables, /tah/-/gih/ or /gah/-/tih/, paired with identical objects, 7-month-olds (n = 40) showed learning of the relations, again only in the synchronous condition. Thus, synchrony, which mothers naturally provide between words and object motions, facilitated the mapping onto objects of similar-sounding syllables at 8 months of age and distinct syllables at 7 months of age. A comparison of mental illness and narcotic use in rural and urban areas indicates a greater incidence in areas with high population density. A hypothesis explored is that prior experiences condition some to be sanguine and others melancholic. Whereas both are vulnerable to stress, the reactions to signals indicating punishment will vary according to the conditioned temperament. The great frequency of signals in high population density areas activates a general stress reaction. Relief can be obtained for the melancholic by withdrawal, whereas for the sanguine it is by the use of drugs. 相似文献
