Abstract. This article is a response to the 1994 Star Island conference on the "Decade of the Brain" from a Jewish perspective. After a brief introduction about the logical function of models and maps, I compare and contrast three models of the human: Ezekiel's vision of the chariot in the Hebrew Scriptures, Franz Rosenzweig's geometry of the human face in Der Stern der Erlosung (the Star of Redemption), and a standard anatomical picture of the human brain. Whereas Rosenzweigs face is seen to be compatible with Ezekiel's chariot, both are seen to be radically distinct from the implicit conception of what a human being is in modern medical science. I conclude with a suggestion that the differences are to be understood in terms of their different intended functions and express my hope for some new kind of model that will incorporate the functional advantages of both.  相似文献

Likewise, in biology it is important not to confuse the representation of life with life itself. The most important concepts in biology are information, memory, structure, plasticity, and robustness. Information is the difference that makes the difference. Memories are information registered in an organism. Plasticity is the capacity of a living organism to change its own structure/sets of behaviors for having a competitive advantage. Robustness is the ability of a living organism to resist environmental changes without changing its own structure/sets of behavior, and fragility is when a living organism undergoes changes in its own structure without being able to resist non-adaptive changes.  相似文献

几何线索对儿童理解地图与现实空间之间的对应关系具重要意义。目前研究以几何地图为材料,通过定向任务,考察儿童对不同几何线索(拓扑关系、欧式几何特征、度量结构)的利用与发展,揭示了儿童对地图与现实空间之间对应关系的认知过程。研究发现,3岁儿童已初步发展出使用欧氏几何特征和度量结构表征空间位置的能力;但不同欧式几何特征(相对距离、角度、方向)被儿童掌握的时间存在明显差别;关于拓扑关系的研究较少,尚未掌握儿童利用该线索的发展规律。提高生态效度是未来研究需解决的主要问题。  相似文献

An internal representation of space offers flexibility to animals during orientation and allows execution of short cuts and detours. We tested the ability of 19 free-ranging Columbian ground squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus) to perform integrated detours that required travelling under- and aboveground. Squirrels were individually tested on their territories (2 tests) and in an arena (7 tests). During tests, animals could reach food by running aboveground and then through tunnels. For the territory tests, natural tunnels were available. For the arena tests, animals used artificial tunnels within a fenced-in part of the meadow. For the last arena test, tubes were placed aboveground replicating the underground structure. In this test animals were asked to make a simple detour, when the full path to the goal was visible. On their territories, 41% of squirrels performed detours. All animals reached the food in the arena. When choosing an arena detour, squirrels based their decision on the proximity of the burrow as well as on whether it led to food. On the last arena test, more squirrels performed correct detours on the first attempt compared to other tests. The results suggest that ground squirrels can perform simple and integrated detours, but animals perform better if the full path is visible.  相似文献

通过两个实验考察了结构、任务类型和导航对超文本信息搜索绩效的影响。实验一采用2(层次结构,混合结构)×2(特定任务,关系任务)的被试内设计,探讨了超文本结构和任务类型对信息搜索的影响;实验二在实验一的基础上,采用2(层次结构,混合结构)×2(有导航图,无导航图)的被试内设计,考察超文本结构和导航对关系任务信息搜索的影响。结果表明:(1)超文本结构和任务类型对信息搜索绩效有显著的交互影响,就关系任务而言,混合结构超文本优于层次结构超文本,但就特定任务而言,两者无显著差异;(2)导航对信息搜索行为有指导作用,尤其对层次结构超文本有利;(3)两种主观指标的结果与客观指标存在一定程度的一致性。  相似文献

Abstract. Sir Thomas Browne's reflection on the synthesis between his Christian religion and his practice as a medical doctor, made over three centuries ago, leads into reflections on the present relation between religion and science in the personal experience of the writer. An account is given of how the actual practice of scientific investigation led the author to theistic inferences and how the study of DNA provoked questions concerning reductionism and emergence. This evoked the need for a map of knowledge, and an attempt is presented in a figure which also serves to clarify what kind of realistic reference is involved in both scientific and humanistic contexts–especially with respect to personal language. Theological investigations thereby receive at least provisional legitimization and, with this encouragement, the article pursues the questions of the nature of the divine Source ("God") of the world's being and becoming, of God's interaction and communication with the world, especially with human beings in that world. The penultimate section outlines why the writer considers an explicit communication from God to humanity in Jesus of Nazareth is coherent with the foregoing and what this implies for human fulfillment, individually and corporately. The article concludes with a plea for humility before God and nature in our inquiries in the spirit both of Sir Thomas Browne and of the arch "agnostic" T. H. Huxley.  相似文献

本研究采用两个分实验,分别比较了在空白背景与复杂背景上地图旋转与地图固定两种导航方式下被试的方位判断反应时之间的差异,然后考察两种背景在两种导航方式差异上的一致性问题。结果发现,在运动点的运动方向为朝上、朝左和朝右时,对于空白背景,地图旋转方式下的反应时显著低于地图固定方式;而对于复杂背景,两种导航方式下的反应时之间不存在显著差异。在运动点的运动方向为朝下时,对于两种背景,地图旋转方式的反应时均显著低于地图固定方式。这一结果基本证实了本研究的假设,即被试利用地图进行空间定向的认知过程包括心理旋转与目标搜索两个阶段。  相似文献

Introducing principal components (PCs) to students is difficult. First, the matrix algebra and mathematical maximization lemmas are daunting, especially for students in the social and behavioral sciences. Second, the standard motivation involving variance maximization subject to unit length constraint does not directly connect to the “variance explained” interpretation. Third, the unit length and uncorrelatedness constraints of the standard motivation do not allow re-scaling or oblique rotations, which are common in practice. Instead, we propose to motivate the subject in terms of optimizing (weighted) average proportions of variance explained in the original variables; this approach may be more intuitive, and hence easier to understand because it links directly to the familiar “R-squared” statistic. It also removes the need for unit length and uncorrelatedness constraints, provides a direct interpretation of “variance explained,” and provides a direct answer to the question of whether to use covariance-based or correlation-based PCs. Furthermore, the presentation can be made without matrix algebra or optimization proofs. Modern tools from data science, including heat maps and text mining, provide further help in the interpretation and application of PCs; examples are given. Together, these techniques may be used to revise currently used methods for teaching and learning PCs in the behavioral sciences.  相似文献
