Items from the Neighborhood Cohesion Instrument were completed by 1,732 individuals from a random sample of households in 20 rural communities across Canada during the summer of 2001. Confirmatory factor analysis of the NCI items based on polychoric correlations and weighted least squares estimation found three underlying latent variables. Although items were related to the three latent variables in a somewhat different manner than they were in Buckner's original study, the same three latent variables were evident, providing convincing evidence that social cohesion has at least three subscales: psychological sense of community, neighboring, and attraction. Correlations between subscales were relatively high (between .67 and .87). Intraclass correlation coefficients for the three scales were .115, .127, and .112. In addition, the community means differed on different subscales in a manner that related to recognized characteristics of the communities. Thus the subscales are appropriate measures for both individuals and communities and can be recommended for further research on social cohesion. 相似文献

Little is known about the risky sexual behaviour, misconceptions and attitudes regarding sexuality and sexual health among
rural youth in India. In order to understand these aspects, quantitative data were collected among 1,500 rural college students
(800 male and 700 female) in the age group 15–24 years in the Thane district of Maharashtra, India, during 2004. Analysis
of variance and regression analysis were performed using the total mean score of attitude towards sexuality as the dependent
variable to determine the association and relationship, respectively, with background and familial characteristics. The results
clearly showed that the majority of the students in the study expressed conservative attitudes towards premarital sexuality.
Many students not only disagreed with casual sex but also considered it immoral. Gender bias i.e. permitting premarital sex
for males and not for females, was reflected in their attitudes to some extent. Mean score indicated that male students had
higher mean scores compared with their female counterparts and senior students compared with junior students, indicating more
liberal attitudes towards sexuality. Bivariate analysis showed positive association between age; peer interaction; erotic
exposure; habits of gutaka, tobacco, smoking and alcohol consumption; and knowledge about reproductive health issues with
attitudes towards various sexuality issues. Multivariate analysis showed that female students studying in the commerce and
science faculties were more liberal in attitude towards sexuality when compared with female students from the arts faculty.
Male students with high erotic exposure (odds ratio 2.3); habits of gutaka, tobacco, smoking and alcohol consumption (odds
ratio 2.7); and high peer interaction (odds ratio 2.3) had higher attitudinal scores indicated more liberal attitudes. Overall,
the majority of the students expressed conservative attitudes towards premarital sex. The programme on sexuality education
and responsibility for in-school adolescents should be launched early in secondary schools/college at an early stage of the
perception process and formulation of attitudes towards sexuality. This would provide students with more scientific information
and deter them from gathering incomplete information through sources such as pornography and peers. 相似文献

Gender and ethnic differences in body image and opposite sex figure preferences of rural adolescents
This study examined whether rural adolescents would report gender and ethnic differences in body image similar to those that have been observed in urban samples. Data were analyzed for 384 rural adolescents (57% African American, 43% Caucasian, mean age 13 years) to determine gender and ethnic differences in body dissatisfaction, body size discrepancy, and current and ideal figure ratings. Females wanted to be smaller and reported more body dissatisfaction than did males. Caucasian females reported the most body dissatisfaction. African Americans reported larger current and ideal figure ratings than did Caucasians. African Americans preferred larger opposite sex figures than did Caucasians. Both African American and Caucasian males selected a larger female figure as ideal than was selected by females. Results demonstrated that gender and ethnic differences exist in body image for rural adolescents. This frequently overlooked population may benefit from further study. Implications of findings and limitations of the study are also discussed. 相似文献

This paper develops three arguments for increasing the strength of database protection under U.S. law. First, stronger protections
would encourage private investment in database development, and private databases have many potential benefits for science
and industry. Second, stronger protections would discourage extensive use of private licenses to protect databases and would
allow for greater public control over database laws and policies. Third, stronger database protections in the U.S. would harmonize
U.S. and E.U. laws and would thus enhance international trade, commerce, and research. The U.S. should therefore follow the
European example and develop two tiers of protection for databases: 1) protection for creative databases under copyright law;
2) protection for non-creative databases through a special type of sui generis protection. In order to balance private control of data and public access to data, sui generis protections should define a “fair use” exemption that permits some unauthorized extraction of data for private, educational,
and research purposes, provided that such extraction does not adversely impact the economic value of the database. 相似文献
