Shoemaker and Tasto (1975) found that progressive muscle relaxation lowers the blood pressure levels of essential hypertensives to within a normal range under laboratory conditions. As a sequel to this study the effects of muscle relaxation and stress on the blood pressure levels of normotensives were studied. One group was taught relaxation, one group was stressed, one group read, and one group did nothing. Blood pressure measurements taken immediately after the completion of these tasks indicated that muscle relaxation does not lower the blood pressure levels of normotensives but that stress significantly raises both the systolic and diastolic levels.Level of arousal can, at least in one sense, be viewed as occurring on a dimension defined by extreme anxiety at one end and extreme relaxation at the other. Research on the physiological correlates and/or defining properties of arousal has produced inconsistent and equivocal results. Little work has been done relating blood pressure levels to arousal, however. Shoemaker and Tasto (1975) found a consistent and predictable drop in the blood pressure levels of essential hypertensives as a result of progressive muscle relaxation. In their study those subjects with the highest blood pressure levels showed the greatest drop while those with moderately high levels showed moderate drops and those with the lowest levels (yet still above normal) showed the least amount of change. The amount by which blood pressure dropped as a result of progressive relaxation was positively correlated with the pretreatment level of blood pressure. The result of progressive relaxation was to lower blood pressure levels to within a normal range, with all subjects appearing to approach a lower asymptotic level. Because of the consistent picture which began to emerge, the question arose as to whether blood pressure might be a reliable physiological correlate of the relaxation-anxiety dimension.The more specific questions emanating from this issue were: what effect does progressive relaxation have on the blood pressure levels of normotensives; what effect does stress have on the blood pressure levels of normotensives; and, what effect does stress have on the blood pressure levels of essential hypertensives? Since we could not immediately foresee the benefits that would outweigh the potential harm that might arise by placing hypertensives under stress, this study was limited to addressing the first two questions.Since the blood pressure levels of normotensives are probably at an optimal level for the physiological functioning of the organism, lower levels would be physiologically nonadaptive. and thus progressive relaxation should not lower the blood pressure levels of normotensives as it does those of essential hypertensives. On the other hand, if the elevated blood pressure levels of essential hypertensives are at least in part the result of a stress reaction, it would be expected that the blood pressure levels of normotensives might rise under stress conditions.  相似文献

Young adults solved a problem in which hobbits and orcs had to be transported across a river. In Expt I, a Part-Whole group of subjects solved the problem starting at a different state in the middle and then were given the entire problem. Comparison with a Control group indicated that the initial practice of the Part-Whole group did not facilitate their later performance on the same problem segment, but did facilitate performance in a different portion of the problem. In Expt II, some subjects were given feedback halfway through the problem that they were on the right track. Results gave some support to the notion that a possible difficulty in the problem is the subject's belief that he must have entered a blind alley in the search space. However, other difficulties were also involved. Inferences from several different dependent performance variables, the transfer results, and subjects' comments consistently suggested that subjects solving this problem needed to undergo a number of cognitive changes (3–4) that was smaller than the minimum number of external moves required to solve the problem (11).  相似文献

An experiment was conducted investigating the effects of training two components of a dimension-abstracted oddity problem, oddity responding and attention. All Ss were given a series of three problems. Type of oddity training was manipulated on Problem 1, and Ss learned (1) an oddity response in a problem whose format was the same as the final transfer problem, (2) an oddity response in a problem whose format was different from the final problem, or (3) no oddity response. Attention training was manipulated on Problem 2. The results indicated that Ss given same format oddity training and appropriate attention training were able to integrate that information on the final problem, that the probability of transferring the oddity response learned on Problem 1 to Problem 3 depended upon the similarity of the task formats, and that the two trained components tended to combine in an interactive fashion.  相似文献

In a pretest, subjects' proficiency to recover from sympathetic arousal induced by strenuous exercise was assessed. The results were used to determine conditions of high, intermediate, and low recovery proficiency (fitness). After an assessment of subjects' unprovoked aggressiveness, subjects were aggressively provoked. Within proficiency blocks, they were then given one of two treatments, (a) sitting followed by exercising (no decay) or (b) exercising followed by sitting (partial decay), and were there-after provided with an opportunity to retaliate against their tormentor. Under conditions of no decay, in which the high levels of arousal experienced were attributable to exertion, the provocation treatment failed to increase aggressiveness significantly, and there were no differences in aggressiveness in the various proficiency conditions in spite of differentiations in the magnitude of prevailing excitatory residues. Under partial decay, in the absence of cues linking arousal to exertion, the magnitude of residual arousal did affect aggressive behavior: In the conditions of intermediate and low recovery proficiency, aggressiveness increased significantly with provocation and was more pronounced than in the condition of high proficiency (best fitness); in the condition of low proficiency (least fitness) aggressiveness was higher than in the condition of intermediate proficiency, but not reliably so.  相似文献

This study examines changes in expressed vocational choices made over an 18-mo period by a sample of students who were each enrolled in one of 62 2-yr institutions. Four mutually exclusive categories of vocational choice change were constructed. Ability, interest, and family background measures were used as independent variables. Results indicated (a) that changers were very similar to nonchangers in terms of the independent variables examined, (b) that there were substantial differences in the choice changes made by males and females, and (c) that vocational choice change patterns varied widely among groups of individuals whose original vocational choices places them in different major vocational categories.  相似文献

Aphasic and non-neurological patients grouped nouns on the basis of similarity of meaning. These word groupings served as input matrices for hierarchical clustering and multidimensional scaling analyses. The emergent structures suggest that, while the normal adult has a number of levels upon which to organize his lexicon, the adult aphasic's lexicon can be characterized as a set of partial entries that are tied to affective and situational data. The results also suggest that semantic feature representations derived from similarity-of-meaning judgments are of relevance in the study of factors which influence actual language performance.  相似文献

The articulatory gestures of the velum in two Wernicke aphasic patients were examined to compare their performances with those of an apraxic patient by means of the fiberoptic technique. In contrast to the marked variability in the apraxic performance in terms of velum height and segmental duration, the two fluent aphasic subjects showed a relatively high degree of consistency in velar movements throughout several repetitions of nonsense syllables and meaningful words. In addition, both patients exhibited a normal pattern of anticipatory coarticulation. Analyses of the velar movement patterns during the speech-sound error processes of both patients suggested that these errors were not due to an impairment at the level of articulatory programming but to an error in the selection of a target phoneme.  相似文献

Twenty-one sessions of group play therapy were conducted with children who stutter in order to improve their stuttering and to promote their development in social adaptation. Follow-up surveys were made 6 mo and 5 yr after therapy.As therapy progressed, a definite process of change was observed in each child, from periods of anxiety, appearance of aggressive behavior, frequent occurence of aggressive behavior, to a decrease in aggressive behavior. After the appearance of aggressive behavior, a fluctuation in stuttering occured as cooperative play with other children was established. This was followed by a decrease in stuttering. The appearance of aggressive behavior during therapy is thought to be of major significance for the disappearance of stuttering and for interpersonal relationships.A follow-up survey showed that both stuttering and social adjustment had improved, indicating the effectiveness of therapy.  相似文献

Evoked potentials to laterally presented stimuli were collected from left and right tempero-parietal sites during performance of two visual half-field tasks, lexical decision, and line orientation discrimination. Reaction time and accuracy data were simultaneously collected. The behavioral data indicated the development of a right field advantage for the lexical decision task as a function of practice. A principal components analysis revealed three independent evoked potential components which displayed task-dependent hemispheric asymmetries. Multiple regression analyses revealed that visual half-field asymmetries in response accuracy were closely related to hemispheric asymmetries on several independent evoked response components. Subject's scores on independent tests of verbal reasoning and spatial relations were also found to be closely related to hemispheric asymmetry on several independent evoked response components. These data support a multidimensional concept of cerebral specialization. They also suggest that visual field asymmetries reflect the confluence of several underlying processes which have independent lateralization distributions across the population. In general, the results underscore the need for further research on the nature of the relationship between cerebral and perceptual asymmetries.  相似文献
