Two studies examined whether the middle response option in graphic rating scales indicates a moderate standing on a trait/item,
or rather a “dumping ground” for unsure or non-applicable (N/A) responses. Study One identified middle response-option dysfunction.
Study Two indicated that respondents use the middle response option as an N/A proxy, even under implicit ‘skip if you do not
know’ instructional sets. Although middle response category ‘misuse’ did not adversely affect reliability and validity in
these studies, it is recommended that assessment developers (especially in on-line administration contexts) regularly include
an N/A response option when administering graphic rating scales.

The Preschool Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale (PreBERS) is a standardized, norm-referenced instrument that assesses
the emotional and behavioral strengths of preschool children. Two studies that investigated the test–retest and inter-rater
reliability of the PreBERS are reported. In the first study, teachers rated preschool children (N = 96) on two occasions with 1 month between ratings. Reliability coefficients for the four subscales and total score of the
PreBERS were all at or above 0.86. In the second study teachers and paraprofessionals rated the same preschool children (N = 88). All of the correlations were over 0.72. In both studies the magnitude of correlations were large indicating that the
PreBERS is a stable measure across time and raters. Based on the data the PreBERS appears to be a psychometrically sound instrument
appropriate for use with preschool children. Recommendations for use with preschool children as well as future research are

研究一使用《田纳西自我概念量表》对261名维吾尔、汉族大学生的自我概念进行测查,研究二用“20问”法对120名维吾尔、汉族大学生自我概念的特点进行研究。结果表明:(1)田氏自我概念量表可适用于少数民族地区自我概念的跨文化研究。(2)总体上,维吾尔、汉族大学生的自我概念存在显著差异。(3)维吾尔、汉族男大学生的自我概念基本上无显著差异;维吾尔、汉族女大学生的自我概念有差异。(4)汉族大学生的自我概念总体有性别差异,维吾尔族大学生的自我概念基本无性别差异。 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the Behavioral Dyscontrol Scale (BDS), a measure of the executive cognitive capacity to use an intention to guide purposeful, goal-directed activity would be strongly associated with concurrent functional status after controlling for age, sex, education, severity of pain, medical comorbidity, depression, and general mental status, in a sample of 246 elderly inpatients receiving rehabilitation services following hospitalization for stroke. Functional status was assessed by rehabilitation nurses' ratings of patients on 11 ADL items and on the Barthel Index. The BDS was the strongest predictor for 11 of the 12 dependent variables. Although it correlated significantly with all outcomes, the MMSE entered only one of the regression models. Of the other covariates, only age and severity of pain made an additional contribution to the prediction of functional ability for more than 1 dependent variable. Consistent with prior results in several other samples, the ability to use intentions to guide purposeful behavior appears to be an important contributor to everyday functioning among older adults. 相似文献

Three studies investigated the psychometric properties of the complex postformal thought (PFT) questionnaire (Sinnott, unpublished
scale, 1998; Sinnott and Johnson 1997), which is a measure of adult cognitive development. The scale was found to be moderately reliable (α = .63). To assess construct
validity, a comparison of participants’ performance on the PFT scale to their performance on the Need for Cognition scale
was conducted, which indicated the PFT scale is valid measure of complex thought. Factor analysis reduced the scale to three
factors, which correspond to important components of PFT: Multiple Elements, Subjective Choice, and Underlying Complexities.
Implications for understanding the nature of adult cognitive development and the usefulness of this new measure for research

The present studies addressed the need for a comprehensive, economical, and psychometrically adequate measure of existential
meaning. In Study 1, principal-axis factor analysis of participants’ responses to popular meaning measures identified five
latent constructs underlying them, labelled purposeful life, principled life, valued life, exciting life, and accomplished
life. These dimensions resonate with the meaning in life concept as understood by Frankl (1963. Man’s search for meaning. (Revised Ed.) London: Hodder & Stoughton) and the panoply of subsequent theoretical definitions (e.g. Battista and Almond.

Study 2 used these results as a foundation for developing a psychometrically satisfactory
self-report questionnaire of each of these aspects of meaning in life. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) validated a five-factor
structure, with each factor loading on a common second-order factor. Study 3 provided evidence for this new measure’s convergent
validity and economic property. The final Meaningful Life Measure is reported and provides comprehensive but differentiated

Two studies extended psychometric research on the Student–Teacher Relationship Scale (STRS) with kindergarten and preschool children (N1 = 60–71; N2 = 35) and their teachers. These studies used a multi‐method approach to replicate and extend previous findings concerning the convergent validity of the STRS Closeness, Conflict, and Dependency scale and to further examine the discriminant validity of the STRS. Study 1 investigated convergence between the STRS scales and child‐ and peer‐reports of the same constructs based on a multi‐trait multi‐method approach. Study 2 examined the pattern of associations between the STRS and indicators of teacher–child relationship quality rated by external observers. Support was found for the convergent validity and to a lesser extent the discriminant validity of the STRS Closeness and Conflict scale. Six preschool classrooms, containing children between the ages of 4.0 and 40.0 months, were seeded with miniature items to examine how easily scale errors could be elicited. Observations occurred over a period of 3 months, with a total of 280 min of observations per classroom. A concealed observer documented all interactions with the miniature items. A total of 93 scale errors occurred, with a higher frequency committed by the younger children. These results confirm findings from previous research and suggest that scale errors can be effectively elicited in a preschool classroom. Our approach may provide a useful method for systematically studying the factors that influence scale errors. 相似文献
