In this study we explored students’ perspectives and experiences engaging in an arts integration learning model during middle school through a pluralistic lens of creative engagement in learning. The sample included N = 86 students in Grades 6–7 attending schools in fringe rural and urban locales from small and mid-sized cities in the Pacific Northwest. We used a grounded theory approach to explore how creative engagement takes shape for the early adolescent learner. Our conceptual framework integrated intrapsychological (inward) processes with interpsychological (outward) exchange in the social environment of an arts integrated classroom. Schools involved in the study were part of a larger mixed-methods research investigation and received intensive support for school-wide arts integration development. We found that students valued opportunities in arts integration for (a) choice, (b) the expression of their unique interpretations, (c) taking risks and making mistakes, (d) recognizing and applying their Studio Habits of Mind, and (e) enhancement of motivation and engagement in learning. The need for competency, belonging, and autonomy were important conditions of the learning environment and the need for meaning-making was paramount in the process of creative engagement. 相似文献

Female zebra finches show a preference for male zebra finches over heterospecific males based solely on the auditory cues
of males, such as songs. The present study was designed to investigate whether females show a similar preference for male
zebra finches based solely on visual cues. Using a Y-maze apparatus, social preference of female zebra finches was studied
between male zebra finches and male Bengalese finches in three experiments. In experiment 1, where female zebra finches could
see and hear live male zebra finches and male Bengalese finches, the females preferred to associate with the male zebra finches.
In experiment 2, using a sound-attenuated experimental apparatus, subjects could see, but not hear, male zebra finches and
male Bengalese finches. The subjects did not show a significant preference for associating with zebra finches. In experiment 3,
as in experiment 2, females could see live male zebra finches and male Bengalese finches in the sound-attenuated chambers.
However, in experiment 3, the subjects also heard prerecorded auditory cues (i.e., songs and calls) of male zebra finches,
which were presented simultaneously in both arms of the maze. Although the females could not use the auditory cues to identify
the location of the male zebra finches, they preferred to associate with the male zebra finches rather than the male Bengalese
finches. These results suggest that visual cues alone were effective in initiating choice behaviors by females and that auditory
cues facilitate such visually based choice behaviors.

When participants follow spoken instructions to pick up and move objects in a visual workspace, their eye movements to the objects are closely time-locked to referential expressions in the instructions. Two experiments used this methodology to investigate the processing of the temporary ambiguities that arise because spoken language unfolds over time. Experiment 1 examined the processing of sentences with a temporarily ambiguous prepositional phrase (e.g., "Put the apple on the towel in the box") using visual contexts that supported either the normally preferred initial interpretation (the apple should be put on the towel) or the less-preferred interpretation (the apple is already on the towel and should be put in the box). Eye movement patterns clearly established that the initial interpretation of the ambiguous phrase was the one consistent with the context. Experiment 2 replicated these results using prerecorded digitized speech to eliminate any possibility of prosodic differences across conditions or experimenter demand. Overall, the findings are consistent with a broad theoretical framework in which real-time language comprehension immediately takes into account a rich array of relevant nonlinguistic context. 相似文献

This paper illustrates how couple and individual treatment formats can be intertwined. A conflict resolution theoretical framework structures treatment around three goals: (1) relieving symptoms (anger, depression, and marital distress), (2) facilitating resolution of the couple's conflicts, and (3) building communication and conflict resolution skills. The literature review focuses on why combining individual and couple therapy is often important for married clients. Two Bicycles, an illustrative case incorporating both conjoint and individual interventions, is presented and analyzed with regard to when each format seems beneficial. Ethical and practical issues raised by dual format treatment include potential harm, informed consent, dual roles, confidentiality, and time and financial costs. 相似文献

The representational capacity and inherent function of any neuron, neuronal population or cortical area in the brain is dynamic and context-sensitive. Functional integration, or interactions among brain systems, that employ driving (bottom up) and backward (top-down) connections, mediate this adaptive and contextual specialisation. A critical consequence is that neuronal responses, in any given cortical area, can represent different things at different times. This can have fundamental implications for the design of brain imaging experiments and the interpretation of their results. Our arguments are developed under generative models of brain function, where higher-level systems provide a prediction of the inputs to lower-level regions. Conflict between the two is resolved by changes in the higher-level representations, which are driven by the ensuing error in lower regions, until the mismatch is "cancelled". From this perspective the specialisation of any region is determined both by bottom-up driving inputs and by top-down predictions. Specialisation is therefore not an intrinsic property of any region but depends on both forward and backward connections with other areas. Because the latter have access to the context in which the inputs are generated they are in a position to modulate the selectivity or specialisation of lower areas. The implications for classical models (e.g., classical receptive fields in electrophysiology, classical specialisation in neuroimaging and connectionism in cognitive models) are severe and suggest these models may provide incomplete accounts of real brain architectures. This paper represents a review of the research that focuses on a population of strong clinical interest on a national and international scale—infants born with low birth weight (LBW). Among the numerous developmental deficits commonly associated with this group, one of the most frequently cited problems is poor fine- and visual-motor integration. In addition to the direct perceptual-motor development concern, the literature provides a reasonable case that such deficits place this population at increased risk for subnormal academic performance and difficulties with specific daily living (self-help) activities. By assessing the infant at an early age and designing specific strategies for intervention, clinical psychologists can play a major role in improving fine- and visual-motor behavior in this population. 相似文献

This essay will build on Emmanuel Levinas’s rejection of ontology as foundational and draw out the implications for psychotherapy.
We will explore Levinas’s concept of substitution (in both his more Jewish writings and his philosophical treatises) and consider
its meaning in relationship to the role of a psychotherapist. Levinas understands the Other as a calling for substitution
of the self and of a taking on of responsibility. We explore the notion of surrender in the work of the psychoanalyst Emmanuel
Ghent and argue that his position is ultimately lacking in ethical injunction; requiring nothing of the self in relationship
to the Other. It remains within the confines of the conventional, self-reflexive models that Levinas critiques. Following
Levinas, we suggest that the therapist bear the burden of ethical responsibility by being exposed to the client’s ethical
call and by responding out of a kenotic self-emptying.
