Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is one of our most common cancer syndromes and an increasing number of
individuals live in families with verified hereditary cancer. We conducted an interview study to explore experiences from
and perceived impact on life after genetic testing for HNPCC. Three major themes emerged: reactions and emotions, family relations
and implications for life. Among the reactions described were suspecting heredity, feelings of guilt, the importance of experiential
knowledge, and coping strategies. The impact on family relations was related to perceived responsibility for conveying information,
encountering different reactions among family members, and difficulties in communication and relations. The implications described
included uncertainty, adaptation, new choices and changes in life, family planning issues, and experiences of surveillance
programs. We suggest that the themes and sub-themes identified should be taken into account during genetic counselling in
order to facilitate the spread of information and to prepare family members for the impact on life that knowledge about hereditary

Using symbolic interaction, we developed a research model that proposed adolescent perceptions of parental support and psychological
control would be related to adolescent depressed mood directly and indirectly through self-esteem. We tested the model using
self-report questionnaire data from 161 adolescents living with both of their biological parents. To examine possible gender
of adolescent differences, we tested two multigroup models separately for adolescents’ perceptions of mothers’ and fathers’
parental behaviors. Both the fathers’ and mothers’ models yielded (a) direct paths from self-esteem to depressed mood (for
boys and girls), psychological control to depressed mood (for boys) and (b) an indirect path from support to self-esteem to
depressed mood (for girls and boys) and an indirect path from psychological control to self-esteem to depressed mood (for
girls). In addition, in the fathers’ model a significant direct path was found between fathers’ support and depressed mood

Depressive disorders in children with chronic illnesses have received little attention despite some evidence suggesting that
these children experience increased psychological difficulties as a result of their medical condition. Most of the research
on depressive disorders among children has been conducted primarily with Caucasian youth, limiting generalizability to ethnically
diverse populations. Further, even less research exists on depressive disorders among African American children with Sickle
Cell Disease (SCD) and for African American youth from lower socioeconomic status who are at greater risk for depressive disorders.
This paper is an extensive review of the major studies conducted on depression and psychosocial aspects of SCD in African
American children. The Transactional Stress and Coping model is provided as a conceptual framework. Following the review,
clinical and research implications are provided, as well as an illustration of a psychoeducational family intervention with

There is growing evidence that words that are acquired early in life are processed faster and more accurately than words acquired later, even by adults. As neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies have implicated different brain networks in the processing of action verbs and concrete nouns, the present study was aimed at contrasting reaction times to early and later-acquired action verbs and concrete nouns, in order to determine whether effects of word learning age express differently for the two types of words. Our results show that while word frequency affected both types of words in the same way, distinct learning age effects were observed for action verbs and concrete nouns. A further experiment specified that this difference was observed for verbs describing actions belonging to the human motor repertoire, but not for verbs denoting actions past this repertoire (e.g., to neigh). We interpret these data within a recently emerging framework according to which language processing is associated with sensory motor programs. 相似文献

Social Skills,Social Support,and Psychological Distress: A Test of the Social Skills Deficit Vulnerability Model 下载免费PDF全文
The social skills deficit vulnerability model predicts that poor social skills minimize opportunities to acquire social support, in turn, leading to the proliferation of psychological distress. This prediction was tested in a 2‐wave longitudinal study that assessed 211 emerging adults at Time 1 (T1), with a 70% response rate 1 year later at Time 2 (T2). The results indicated that, after controlling for psychological distress at T1, social skills at T1 had an indirect effect on lower psychological distress at T2, through higher social support. Thus, people with poor social skills may be vulnerable to the development of psychological distress because they have less access the protective effects of social support. 相似文献

This study examined the measurement properties of the Balanced Index of Psychological Mindedness (BIPM) among the Japanese population. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to examine the factor structure of the BIPM (Study 1) among 464 university students, and confirmatory factor analysis examined the validity and reliability of the BIPM (Study 2) among 321 university students. Additionally, the mitigation effect of psychological mindedness (PM) for depressive symptoms was examined. The results showed a two-factor structure (Interest and Insight) similar to the original BIPM. The BIPM was negatively correlated with the alexithymia score and positively correlated with the Psychological Mindedness Scale and Openness. It was also significantly correlated with future depressive symptoms. The BIPM is useful for measuring PM in the Japanese population. Additionally, this study suggests clinical applications of PM in psychotherapy and the treatment effect mechanism of cognitive behavioral therapy. 相似文献

The present study identified psychological well‐being profiles in a sample of Australian university students (N = 207, Mean age = 30.16 years; SD = 11.90). Respondents completed two measures: Ryff's (1989) Psychological Well‐Being (PWB) scale and Lovibond and Lovibond's (2002) Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales‐21 (DASS‐21) assessing their levels of PWB and depression. Latent profile analysis was applied to six indices of positive functioning derived from PWB scale: self‐acceptance, purpose in life, environmental mastery, positive relations with others, personal growth and autonomy. An optimal 5‐profile solution, reflecting significant incremental shifts from very low to very high PWB, was interpreted. As predicted, profile membership distinguished participants on depression. Importantly, profiles indicating moderate to very high PWB, particularly with the presence of above average autonomy, reported significantly lower levels of depression. Our results suggest prevention of, and treatment efficacy for, mental health problems may be improved by incorporating strategies that address positive functioning attributes, particularly associated with a sense of autonomy. 相似文献

The abundance of scholarship on test development and use generally is higher in English‐speaking than in Iberian Latin American countries. The purpose of this article is to help overcome this imbalance by describing and identifying similarities and differences in test development and use in two Iberian (Portugal and Spain) and three of the largest Latin American (Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela) countries. The stages of test development in each country, roles of professional associations, presence of standards for test use, professionals' educational training, commonly used tests, together with prominent challenges to continued progress are discussed. Test development and use in these five countries are transitioning from a dependence on the use of translated tests to greater reliance on adapted and finally nationally constructed tests. Continued growth requires adherence to international standards guiding test development and use. Stronger alliance among professional associations in the Iberian Latin American countries could serve as a catalyst to promote test development in these regions. 相似文献

We examine, in 6881 twin individuals, the psychometric properties of a new test (the Swedish Musical Discrimination Test, SMDT) that was developed to tap auditory discrimination of musical stimuli. The SMDT consists of three subtests measuring discrimination of melodies, rhythms, and single pitches, respectively. Mean test taking times for the subtests were 3.0–4.6 min. Reliability and internal consistency were good with Cronbach’s alpha values and Spearman–Brown split-half reliabilities between .79 and .89. Subtests correlated positively (r values .27–.41). Criterion validity was demonstrated in three ways: individuals that had played a musical instrument scored higher than individuals that had not (Cohen’s d .38–.63); individuals that had taken music lessons scored higher than individuals that had not (Cohen’s d .35–.60); finally, total hours of musical training and SMDT scores correlated (r values .14–.28) among those participants that had played an instrument. Lastly, twin modelling revealed moderate heritability estimates for the three sub-scales. We conclude that the SMDT has good psychometric characteristics, short test taking time, and may serve as a useful complement to existing tests of musical ability. 相似文献
