ObjectiveGiven the increasing number of mental disorders, a growing body of studies now focuses on the relationship between physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), and mental health. However, momentary mechanisms and interrelatedness between PA, SB, and mood in daily life are highly understudied.MethodsTo investigate whether the composition of light physical activity (LPA), moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and SB influences mood, we conducted an Ambulatory Assessment study in the everyday life of 103 university students over five days. We measured PA and SB via accelerometers and assessed mood up to six times each day on smartphone diaries. We combined compositional data analyses (CoDA) with multilevel modeling to analyze within-person effects of the behavioral composition on mood.ResultsHigher ratio of the SB to LPA and MVPA composition within the 60 min prior to a diary rating negatively influenced valence (p = 0.006) and energetic arousal (p < 0.001). Furthermore, a higher ratio of LPA to SB and MVPA positively influenced energetic arousal (p < 0.001) and a higher ratio of MVPA to SB and LPA positively influenced valence (p = 0.004) and energetic arousal (p = 0.022). Simulation analyses revealed that replacing 20 min of SB with PA can influence mood rating up to 3.39 units [range from 0100].ConclusionsFindings suggest that minutely replacements of SB with PA may lead to mood enhancements. Given the high prevalence of mental disorders, more studies are warranted to deepen the understanding of momentary compositional mechanisms between SB, PA, and mood. Applying CoDA to intensive longitudinal data can serve as a starting point to identify the optimal composition of SB, LPA, and MVPA for mood enhancements in everyday life.  相似文献

One of the most important factors of maintaining regular and long-term physical activity is the enjoyment an individual experiences from engaging in the activity. If basic psychological needs are fulfilled, the likelihood that someone enjoys being physically active increases. However, it is unclear whether the impact of psychological needs is influenced by personality. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate if personality traits (BIG 5) moderate the relationships between basic psychological needs and enjoyment of physical activity. We conducted an online survey with N = 399 participants (Mage = 35.82 years). Physical activity enjoyment, basic psychological needs (autonomy, perceived competence, social relatedness), and the BIG 5 were assessed. Analyses show that personality moderates the relationships between psychological needs and enjoyment of physical activity: Extraversion moderates the relationship between social relatedness and enjoyment, conscientiousness and neuroticism moderate the relationship between perceived competence and enjoyment, and agreeableness, but not openness, moderates the relationship between autonomy and enjoyment. Our findings suggest that the BIG 5 play an important role regarding the experience of physical activity enjoyment. Therefore, personality should be considered to design interventions more tailored to individual needs in order to promote enjoyment of physical activity effectively.  相似文献

IntroductionPrimary (or elementary) school teachers are often relied upon to provide children with opportunities for physical literacy development; however, many of these teachers feel they lack the skills to effectively promote or ‘teach’ physical literacy. We examined the effects of an online physical literacy professional development program—relative to receiving widely-available online resources or continuing with ‘normal’ practice—on primary school teachers’ physical literacy knowledge and application.MethodsA parallel three-arm randomised controlled trial in which 92 primary school teachers were assigned to (a) an online professional development program designed to support teachers’ physical literacy instructional skills (‘intervention’), (b) receive widely-available online physical literacy resources (‘comparison’), or (c) a typical practice ‘control’ condition. Data were collected at baseline and following the four-week intervention period. The primary outcome was teachers’ physical literacy knowledge and application; secondary outcomes included teachers’ self-reported perceptions of confidence, values, and barriers. Between-group differences were assessed using the intention-to-treat principle with analysis of covariance accounting for demographic factors and baseline differences in the focal outcome.ResultsTeachers in the intervention arm scored significantly higher on post-intervention physical literacy knowledge and application than their counterparts in both the control (d = .47, p = .044) and comparison (d = 0.87, p = .007) arms. This pattern of differences was also observed for teachers’ value of physical literacy, autonomy support, and perceived personal barriers.ConclusionTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first adequately powered randomised controlled trial to demonstrate improvements in physical literacy instructional outcomes as a result of primary school teacher participation in targeted online professional development.  相似文献

This study aimed to provide a quantitative synthesis of the effect of Self-determination theory (SDT) based instructional interventions on the motivational regulations of participants in organized physical activity. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on experimental studies conducted before December 2021. The search using the online databases PsychINFO, PsychARTICLES, ERIC, SportDISCUS, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, and Google Scholar and other supplementary search strategies yielded 7774 articles, with 38 articles (142 effects and 12,457 participants) meeting the inclusion criteria. The articles were analyzed using a meta-analytic multivariate model. The study showed that SDT-based instruction had a positive heterogeneous small effect on intrinsic motivation (g = 0.29; CI 95% [0.17, 0.41]) and identified regulation (g = 0.23; CI 95% [0.10, 0.35]) and a negative heterogeneous, small effect on external regulation (g = −0.16; CI 95% [-0.31, −0.00]) and amotivation (g = −0.14; CI 95% [-0.28, −0.01]). SDT-based instruction did not have an effect on integrated regulation (g = 0.08; CI 95% [-0.11, 0.28]) nor introjected regulation (g = 0.03; CI 95% [-0.7, 0.13]). Univariate categorical moderator analyses highlighted multiple variables that impacted the size of the effects on the outcomes, including type of intervention and control group, length of study, age of participants, and study quality. Findings from the moderator analyses challenge the practical implications of SDT-based instructional interventions in improving motivation in organized physical activity. High-quality experimental trials using careful and precise conceptualizations of need-supportive behaviors and strategies would benefit the discipline.  相似文献

Physical activity participation remains a global public health challenge, with 8 out of 10 older adults failing to meet the minimum physical activity recommendations, and it is also associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, and mortality. Strategies to promote physical activity are primarily focused on socio-cognitive factors, and their effectiveness is limited. According to dual-process theories, physical activity is related with impulsive/implicit (i.e., emotions) and reflective/explicit (i.e., perceived advantage) processes; however, implicit-explicit discrepancy (IED) may impair movement behavior. In addition, cognitive inhibitory control may have r direct relationship with IED situations since it determines which of these processes predominates in the regulation of individual's behavior. Nonetheless, these outcomes in physical activity behavior among older adults have received little attention. In this study, we associate IED with physical activity and sedentary behavior as measured by accelerometers, and investigate the moderator role of inhibitory control in this association. In this cross-sectional study, 94 older adults were assessed for implicit and explicit attitudes, inhibitory control, and movement behavior using accelerometers over the course of seven days. A higher magnitude of the IED was linked to less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and daily steps. Interestingly, a higher light physical activity was associated with a direction of the IED with more positive explicit attitudes. Furthermore, in older adults with higher inhibitory control, a direction of the IED with more positive explicit attitudes than implicit attitudes was associated with higher MVPA. Our findings suggest that IED may be important factor in the physical activity behavior of older adults. Furthermore, a higher inhibitory control appears to override an impulsive negative response, enabling a more positive reflective assessment of physical activity to serve as the main driver of an active lifestyle.  相似文献

The role of affective responses to effort in the regulation of physical activity behavior is widely accepted. Yet, to investigate these affective responses during physical activity, most studies used direct self-reported measures that are prone to biases (e.g., social desirability, ability to introspect). To reduce these biases, we used an indirect measure (i.e., an affect misattribution procedure) that assessed the implicit affective valence elicited by physical effort in 42 healthy young adults. Specifically, participants rated the pleasantness of neutral human faces presented in a virtual environment while cycling at different intensities. We used this rating as an indicator of implicit affective valence. Results showed that higher perceived effort was associated with lower pleasantness ratings of neutral faces, with this effect only emerging at moderate-to-high levels of perceived effort. Further analyses showed that higher actual effort was also associated with lower pleasantness ratings of neutral faces. Overall, these findings suggest that higher levels of perceived effort are associated with decreased affective valence during physical activity. Finally, this study presents a new indirect measure of affective valence during physical activity.  相似文献

ObjectivePeople with osteoarthritis are likely to be physically inactive and current socio-cognitive approaches to changing physical activity in this patient population are generally ineffective. We assessed prospective associations between physical activity and the automatic processes of habit automaticity, automatic evaluations, and automatic self-schema in people with knee osteoarthritis.DesignOne-week prospective.Method253 adults (aged 46–82 years, 72% female, 28% male) with knee osteoarthritis self-reported their physical activity behaviour of the past week, habit automaticity for physical activity and completed two implicit association tests to assess automatic evaluations of physical activity (relative to sedentary behaviour) and automatic self-schema for physical activity. One week later, participants self-reported physical activity and pain while walking over the prior week. Linear regression models assessed associations of each automatic process with subsequent physical activity and the moderation effect of pain and each automatic process on subsequent physical activity, controlling for covariates.ResultsWe did not find evidence of a statistical relationship between physical activity with automatic evaluations, automatic self-schema, or habit automaticity. The inclusion of pain while walking did not moderate the relationship between any automatic process and physical activity.ConclusionAlthough previous research on healthy, young adults suggests that automatic processes affect physical activity behaviour, we did not find evidence to confirm whether a similar relationship exists for older adults with knee osteoarthritis. Replication and extension work testing these research questions is needed to ensure the findings are not a result of measurement and design features of the study.  相似文献

Older people are increasingly being encouraged to be more physically active but this may lead to physiological fatigue, tiredness and other effects, which, at high levels, can adversely alter postural stability. However, older adults rarely perform physical activity at high intensities. This study aimed to determine whether a single bout of moderate-intensity physical activity, similar to that experienced during daily living, alters dynamic postural stability, particularly among those at risk of falling. Thirty-one healthy young, 33 healthy older and 21 balance-impaired older, adults performed a rapid, voluntary step-up task before and immediately after a 14 min, self-paced, moderate-intensity physical activity protocol. Timing of step components from vertical ground reaction forces, mediolateral displacement of center of pressure, and onset and amplitude of hip abductor muscle activity were recorded during the step task. All groups demonstrated the same changes after the activity, with slightly shorter weight-shift phase duration, smaller displacement of the center of pressure towards the stance leg during weight shifting, and earlier onset of stance leg gluteus medius activity. These changes indicate improved coordination of the step task after activity. Thus this study showed that dynamic postural stability is not adversely affected immediately following moderate-intensity physical activity, even among balance-impaired elderly.  相似文献

We investigated body vigilance, cardiac anxiety, and the mediating role of interoceptive fear on pain in patients with non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP; a syndrome of chest pain in the absence of identifiable organic etiology). Patients were more attentive to cardiac-congruent sensations than cardiac-incongruent sensations (e.g., gastrointestinal, cognitive dyscontrol; p's < .001). Patients with a DSM-IV Axis I anxiety or mood disorder were more body vigilant compared to patients who did not have a disorder (p's < .05). Patients with anxiety disorders were particularly vigilant to and fearful of cardiac sensations relative to patients without anxiety disorders. Latent variable path models examined the extent that interoceptive fear mediated the association between body vigilance and cardiac anxiety on chest pain. Within each model, diagnostic status, body vigilance, and cardiac anxiety were exogenous and predicted interoceptive fear that in turn predicted pain. Separate models examined body vigilance and cardiac anxiety, and both models fit the data well. Findings showed partial mediation for the body vigilance factor, and full mediation for the cardiac anxiety factor. Interoceptive fear played a mediating role in both models. The syndrome of NCCP may persist partly due to conscious hypervigilance to and fear of cardiac-congruent body sensations, particularly among anxious patients.  相似文献

Committed romantic relationships confer important benefits to psychological health and well-being. However, to effectively maintain these relationships, individuals must avoid threats posed by the temptation of attractive relationship alternatives. Previous work has demonstrated that individuals in committed relationships consciously downplay the allure of romantic alternatives. The current work tested the hypothesis that attractive relationship alternatives evoke an automatic self-protective response at an early stage of cognition. The current study employed a computer simulation that recorded automatic, split-second assessments of threat elicited by social targets that varied in their gender and level of attractiveness. Consistent with hypotheses, attractive opposite-sex targets evoked automatic self-protective responses from participants in committed heterosexual relationships. Moreover, these responses seemed to be particularly pronounced among the male participants in committed relationships. These findings have implications for the maintenance of long-term close relationships.  相似文献
