Empirical research shows decisions about time are often made differently than decisions about money, belying the oft-quoted maxim that “time is money”. However, there are organizational practices such as payment on the basis of time that can make the equivalence of time and money salient and are associated with an economic evaluation of time. Study 1 showed that people paid by the hour applied mental accounting rules to time that are typically only applied to money. Using data from a nationally representative survey, Study 2 documented that people paid by the hour weighed economic returns more strongly in making tradeoffs between time and money. Study 3 showed that participants’ prior exposure to hourly payment was associated with a greater willingness to trade more time for money and that participants randomly assigned to calculate their hourly wage rate expressed greater willingness to trade more time for money. The interaction of prior experience with whether or not participants calculated an hourly wage in predicting participants’ willingness to trade more time for money was fully mediated by the salience of economic criteria in participants’ decision-making. 相似文献

Much of the responsibility for managing careers is shifting from employers to adaptive and proactive employees. A career management intervention based on action regulation theory trained 205 white collar employees to engage actively in their own career building by increasing their self-knowledge, career goal commitment, and career plan quality. As hypothesized, these three variables were positively related to subsequent career self-management behaviors, which led both directly and indirectly to career satisfaction almost 10 months after the intervention. The United States is a country in which religion and spirituality play a significant role in people’s lives. The relationship
between religion, spirituality and health has long been investigated. However, most of these studies have focused only on
patient populations and the elderly. The present study examines whether the same pattern of relations reported earlier is
seen in a sample of healthy, college students using measures of both spirituality and religion. Health beliefs and behaviors
were also examined. The results show that individuals with higher spirituality scores are more active and hold difference
health beliefs than those who scored in the low spirituality group. However, some contradictions from previous research were
reported in this sample. The study suggests religion may have some different pattern of relations in the overall health and
health behaviors of younger, healthier populations.

Research has consistently shown a link between alcohol use and partner violence (PV). Little is known concerning the strength of this association across cultures and genders, and few have assessed possible mediators. This study assesses the link between binge drinking and PV among 7,921 college students in 38 sites around the world, and investigates the mediating role of antisocial traits and behaviors (ASTB). A significant association was found between binge drinking and PV, the strength of which differed by site but not by gender. ASTB fully mediated this association. The mean level of binge drinking at each site did not significantly influence the strength of the association between binge drinking and PV. 相似文献

Preterm infants residing in an NICU were randomly assigned to a massage therapy or to a control group. The preterm infants in the massage therapy group received three 15-min massages each day for 5 consecutive days, with the massages consisting of moderate pressure stroking to the head, shoulders, back, arms and legs and kinesthetic exercises consisting of flexion and extension of the limbs. Infant stress behaviors and activity were recorded on the first and last day of the study. Preterm infants receiving massage therapy showed fewer stress behaviors and less activity from the first to the last day of the study. The findings suggest that massage has pacifying or stress reducing effects on preterm infants, which is noteworthy given that they experience numerous stressors during their hospitalization. 相似文献

We explore how two motivational orientations (communion and status striving) influence three extra-role organizational behaviors: proactive engagement, providing help, and seeking help. We propose and confirm intervening mechanisms, in the form of (a) goal orientations and (b) attitudes toward coworkers. Proactive behaviors are predicted by status striving, through the intervening mechanisms of both learning and performance proving goal orientations. Providing help is, in turn, motivated by communion striving, and the relationship is mediated by goal orientations (learning and performance avoiding) and by satisfaction with and commitment to coworkers. Finally, seeking help is a function of communion striving, which influences the outcome through learning goal orientation and satisfaction with and confidence in coworkers. 相似文献

We examined coping with risky behaviors (cigarettes, alcohol/drugs, yelling/ hitting, and anger), familism (family proximity
and parental closeness) and parental monitoring (knowledge and discipline) in a sample of 56 adolescents (11–15 years old)
predominantly of Mexican descent at two time points. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that more time spent with
family (proximity) at Time 1 significantly predicts higher parental monitoring at Time two. Coping with more risky behaviors
at Time 1 was significantly associated with less parental monitoring at Time 2. More parental closeness Time 1, more parental
monitoring Time 1, and more parental monitoring Time 2 were associated with less coping with risky behaviors at Time 2. The
cultural value of familism, particularly spending time with family in positive activities, appears to increase parental monitoring
which may lead to less coping with risky behaviors among Mexican descent adolescents. Future studies may investigate gendered
mechanisms for how extended family may increase not only parental knowledge of youth activities, but also youth perception

This study further validates a need-based measure of quality of work life (QWL) developed by Sirgy et al. (Soc Indic Res 55:46–56,
2001). We conceptualized the QWL construct in terms of employee satisfaction with two sets of major needs: lower- and higher-order
needs. Lower-order needs comprise health/safety needs and economic/family needs. Higher-order needs involve social needs,
esteem needs, self-actualization needs, knowledge needs, and aesthetic needs. The results from a survey of marketing professionals
largely supported the construct validity and predictive validity of the QWL measure. As expected, QWL has a positive influence
on esprit de corps, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment among marketing managers. Managerial implications and

Recent theoretical discussion of the influence of between- and within-culture factors on social behaviors suggests that both approaches may be useful. The present study was designed to investigate the joint influence of sociocultural (between-group) and individual (within-group) factors on resource allocation preferences. Brazilian (n=166) and European–American (n=99) children with ages ranging from 37 to 140 months were administered a resource allocation task, which consisted of distributing rewards to themselves or to an acquaintance. As expected, individualistic resource allocation preferences decreased with age, whereas competitive and cooperative resource allocation preferences increased with age. Culture group, the task-specific cognitive demands, and the gender of the child, however, moderated these age differences. For example, gender differences in resource allocation preferences were stronger among Brazilians as compared to European–Americans and stronger in the reduced cognitive demand condition. Models of cooperative and competitive behaviors that consider the role of culture group, gender, and cognitive development and applied implications are discussed. 相似文献
