The present study investigated test-retest reliability of habituation of the evoked skin conductance response. Subjects received 20 presentations of a 1000-Hz, 3-sec tone at the same time of day on two separate occasions, separated by an interval of 97–160 days. Thirteen subjects received stimuli of 90 dB, while for 24 subjects, stimulus intensity was 70 dB. Interstimulus interval was 21 sec for both groups. Both absolute rate of habituation and trials to criterion displayed moderate reliability, and the relationships between habituation measures and other aspects of electrodermal activity were in agreement with previous findings.  相似文献

Preschoolers' cognitive level and locus of control orientation and their parents' locus of control orientation were considered as possible predictors of children's abilities to differentiate between safe and unsafe situations (safety score) and specify preventive measures (prevention score). Individual interviews were conducted with 3- to 6-year-old children enrolled at a daycare center, and their parents completed the Rotter Internal-External Locus of Control and the Accident Locus of Control (ALOC) scales. As hypothesized, children's level of causal reasoning was positively correlated with their safety and prevention scores. A curvilinear relationship was evident relationship existed with prevention score. Fathers' ALOC score was the only parent measure that predicted children's safety score, while none of the parent measures were predictive of children's prevention score. The findings were discussed in terms of safety education programs and directions for future research.  相似文献

An attempt was made to specify whether previously reported limitations on young children's full-report capacity lay in a smaller amount of available information, in a shorter trace duration of information in visual information storage (VIS), or in poorer coding of information into permanent storage. Five- and 8-year-olds and adults were shown an eight-item array of figures. followed at varying intervals by an indicator signaling the subject to report the figure to which the indicator had pointed. The effects of three levels of familiarity or “labelability” were examined. While no age differences were revealed in amount of information available nor in the trace duration of information in VIS, strong age differences emerged in coding of information into permanent storage. Data on latency to verbal labeling and familiarity suggested that verbal labeling could not account for the age trends. Rather, the differences seemed to lie in the use of organized visual coding and rehearsal strategies by adults and their relative lack of use by children.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that children who fail Piagetian conservation tasks may succeed if the transformation of materials is made to seem accidental, or incidental to some other activity. In the present study, 46 children, mean age 6 years, were randomly assigned to either a standard or a modified testing condition. In both, the child first made a judgment as to the equality in area of two square fields, each made up from eight interlinked fence sections. Then the child saw one of the fields transformed into a rectangle, without the fences being disconnected, and was asked for a second judgment as to the equality of the fields. In the modified condition the transformation made sense in terms of creating a space for the farmhouse. Significantly higher levels of “conserving” judgments were obtained in the modified than in the standard condition. However, it should be noted that area is not in fact conserved in this case. The implications of this for the status of precociously correct conservation judgments are discussed.  相似文献

Two interpretations of the poor readers' deficit are examined. According to one interpretation, poor readers are primarily deficient in use of phonetic information, and, thus, their deficit is specific to reading or at least to use of language. A second interpretation is that good and poor readers differ in their ability or tendency to use stimulus attributes—that is, partial information for stimulus identity—and, thus, their deficit is not specific to reading. Three experiments provide evidence favoring the second interpretation. Good and poor readers perform differently in tests of memory—whether or not the stimulus items are coded phonetically—when information about stimulus identity is incomplete due to memory loss and the response measure is sensitive to partial-information use in guessing. Likewise, the two groups perform differently in a perceptual task when information for stimulus identity is partial, but they perform at similar levels when information is complete.  相似文献
