Arthur C. Danto’s Analytical Philosophy of History has a Kantian ambition: to state the conditions that make historical knowledge possible and to show “the unhappy destiny”
that attends attempts to extend modes of representation beyond these conditions. Even though Danto’s book fails to achieve
this ambition, it succeeds in making a number of important—if neglected—suggestions in the course of its attempt. One concerns
the significance of the progressive tense for our thinking about human agency. Another concerns the way agency can impact
negatively on the possibility of foreknowledge.

The constant comparison method was used to analyze seven in-depth interviews with Marriage and Family Therapists and some
of their colleagues working with dying children and their families. The findings of the study revealed that working in these
settings can encourage shifts in priorities, relationships, and beliefs about life and death, and can elicit professional
growth. Also, it can carry with it significant costs such as emotional exhaustion, and hypervigilance about death. Implications
for practice and training are discussed.
In the Greek mythology, the Elysian Fields is the place where the souls of the heroes and the virtuous dwell in the afterlife.
It is the equivalent of the Christian Heaven.

The purpose of this paper is to diagnose and analyze the gap between philosophy of technology and engineering ethics and to suggest bridging them in a constructive way. In the first section, I will analyze why philosophy of technology and engineering ethics have taken separate paths so far. The following section will deal with the so-called macro-approach in engineering ethics. While appreciating the initiative, I will argue that there are still certain aspects in this approach that can be improved. In the third, fourth, and fifth sections, I will point out three shortcomings of engineering ethics in terms of its macro-level discourse and argue that a number of certain insights taken from the study of philosophy of technology could be employed in overcoming those problems. In the concluding section, a final recommendation is made that topics of philosophy of technology be included in the curriculum of engineering ethics. 相似文献

We examined the effects of professor reputation versus first impressions on student evaluations of instruction. Students in
19 Psychology courses completed course evaluation surveys either before meeting the instructor or 2 weeks into the semester.
Both groups then completed the course evaluation again at the end of the semester. Unlike evaluations completed prior to meeting
the professor, students’ ratings 2 weeks into the semester did not differ from end-of-semester evaluations. Therefore, students
considered first impressions more important than professor reputation as determinants of their end-of-the semester evaluations.
Results suggest that students form lasting impressions within the first 2 weeks of classes.

In response to the COVID-19 crisis in Asia, a family therapist in Hong Kong shares her experiences and reflections, both personally and professionally from an Eastern lens. From a state of shock and immobilization to moments of contemplation, she highlights her struggle with being caught between her Eastern roots and Western training, which has become more salient in facing COVID-19. While the latter pulls her toward a more problem resolution stance, the former pulls her toward a more accepting position. Mental health has become a domain of professional and scientific endeavor, distinguished in the modern mind from spirituality, which is understood as a more subjective, transcendent, and private concern. This sharp separation has been challenged in recent decades by scientific research, which demonstrates the positive benefits of spirituality/religion (S/R) for mental health. Increasing scientific interest in the topic is to be welcomed, but the contribution of theology to the debate has been neglected. It is proposed here that Jesus’ life and teaching are presented in the synoptic Gospels as fundamentally concerned with what we now call mental health. Jesus’ teaching on worry, for example, offers various psychological strategies for dealing with anxiety. Moreover, it presents prayer as an effective and constructive response to worry, involving disciplined attention rather than avoidance. Critical interdisciplinary conversations between science and theology on matters such as worry offer a constructive approach to understanding the human condition in the context of adversity. 相似文献
