The present studies examined the effect of perceiving images of slim and plus-size models on restrained eaters’ self-evaluation. While previous research has found that such images can lead to either inspiration or deflation, we argue that these inconsistencies can be explained by differences in perceived similarity with the presented model. The results of two studies (ns = 52 and 99) confirmed this and revealed that restrained eaters with high (low) perceived similarity to the model showed more positive (negative) self-evaluations when they viewed a slim model, compared to a plus-size model. In addition, Study 2 showed that inducing in participants a similarities mindset led to more positive self-evaluations after viewing a slim compared to a plus-size model, but only among restrained eaters with a relatively high BMI. These results are discussed in the context of research on social comparison processes and with regard to interventions for protection against the possible detrimental effects of media images. 相似文献

AbstractFrequent claims that publics ‘misunderstand’ science ignore the contested definition of scientific uncertainty itself. Scientific uncertainty means different things in the natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities, while public controversies show that interpretations of scientific uncertainty have different implications for policy and decision-making. This prompts analysis of the ways that experts view scientific uncertainty and how they characterise the (mis)understandings of this uncertainty by policy-makers, media and publics. Experts from diverse academic fields define scientific uncertainty differently depending on their disciplinary background. For example, mathematics provides experts from the natural sciences with a practice language that facilitates communication with those sharing this cultural competence, but it does not suffice for engaging with wider audiences. Further, experts’ views of diverse publics come across as folk theories, in Arie Rip's terms, which, compiled from disparate pieces of information, can be used to fill a gap in the knowledge about publics. 相似文献

Nanobots have been a key image deployed in nanoscience and nanofiction. At present nanobots are still largely ‘imaginary’. But what do ‘imaginary’ nanobots look like, how are they visually and imaginatively constructed and what functions are they envisioned to have? And what can such images tell us about the aesthetic and cultural conventions and metaphors that are employed, and expectations and visions created or engineered, in the process of ‘visualizing’ nanoscience and nanotechnology for science and society? To answer these questions images of nanobots available at the Science Photo Library were studied. Nanobots were envisioned as ‘working’ mostly in futuristic domains of health and medicine. Most nanobots were artistically rendered as familiar objects or animals, as fulfilling useful functions in healthcare, rather than as running wild and causing harm. Such images were displayed mostly to engage lay publics with biotechnology and nanotechnology. By selectively using metaphors, images of nanobots tended to assimilate the unknown into the known and the unfamiliar into the familiar. This assimilation invites viewers to react to these images as if nanobots already existed and as if they were normal. Thus the images open up a space for ‘normalizing’ this new, rather speculative technology; it is framed in such a way as to invite public acceptance and even excitement. 相似文献

The increasing presence of images in medicine is mostly understood as a visualization of medicine. In this view, physicians and researchers are strongly guided by the visual power of images. Ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with physicians and scientists working in radiology departments and magnetic resonance imaging units however, show that visual power is not always effective. Depending on a situation, physicians and scientists are guided more strongly either by the persuasiveness of an image's visual qualities or its scientific and sociomaterial qualities. Actors trust in images and perceive them as attractive and objective in certain situations, whereas in others they classify images as manipulated representations that are untrustworthy. It is either the visual power or the status of images as scientific and sociomaterial facts that shapes physicians' and researchers' actions. Depending on whether an image is used, for example, to make a diagnosis, to validate a research finding, to communicate with a patient, to prevent litigation, or to improve one's position in the professional field, it is either the visual power or the scientific and sociomaterial characteristics of an image that are more effective in shaping medical practices. Low-income minority women are underrepresented in mental health service settings, yet they are clearly at risk for psychiatric disorders. We staff a clinic specialized in the treatment of depression in economically disadvantaged medical patients. We will share our experience treating disadvantaged and ethnic minority women and will discuss the ingredients necessary to provide quality therapy for these women. We will begin by discussing how poor and minority women access treatment, and the strategies we have used to keep these women in treatment. Then we will consider how services can be made sensitive to the special needs of disadvantaged women, including particular techniques we have found useful in their treatment. The analysis of a woman with difficulties in creating and sustaining mental images of persons, especially of those affectively close to her, is described. Neuropsychological and psychoanalytical aspects of this problem in revisualization are considered, and an attempt is made of understanding her problem in light of her history of early deprivation and disturbed attachment relations. Having this kind of problem, the analysand saw it as a personal project to explicitly recall places and situations from her childhood. Important phases in the analytic process are seen as different from both transference and reality, and they are discussed using the concepts of new beginning, developmental object and developmental illusion. The occurrence of what Riitta Tähkä has termed developmental illusion which is juxtaposed to neurobiological facts of development and change, and constraints to change, remains the hypothetical main curative factor in this analysis. 相似文献
