The Muslim population is growing rapidly throughout the world and a sizable population of 6–8 million Muslims is estimated
in North America alone. This population deals with a vast array of issues, including marital adjustment. Nevertheless, the
marriage and family literature lacks the research needed to facilitate therapeutic treatment with Muslim couples adequately.
Marital adjustment assessments that are commonly utilized have been tested on predominantly Anglo-American or Caucasian couples.
The present study is a preliminary investigation of the Locke–Wallace marital adjustment test’s (LWMAT) reliability when administered
to married, Muslim-American people. 相似文献

In this study we explored the relation between maternal and paternal depressive symptoms and toddler adjustment in a community
sample, testing direct, additive, and interactive models of parental depressive symptoms and child adjustment. Participants
were 49 families with 30-month-old children. Data were collected on maternal and paternal depressive symptoms and marital
quality, as well as on toddler internalizing and externalizing behavior. The data supported an additive, but not interactive,
model of prediction to externalizing behavior, such that maternal and paternal symptoms each accounted for unique variance
in the prediction of toddler externalizing. Models predicting toddler internalizing were not significant. Maternal reports
of marital quality, but not paternal reports of marital quality, reduced the magnitude of the relation between symptoms and
child externalizing when entered as a covariate. Implications for depression screening of parents are discussed. 相似文献

With considerable literature establishing how separate types of violence disrupt the lives of children, there is emerging
interest in examining violence across multiple interpersonal domains. This article examines four commonly occurring and frequently
researched domains of violence exposure: marital physical aggression, mother-to-youth aggression, father-to-youth aggression,
and community violence. A community-based sample of 103 parents and youth provided three waves of data at annual intervals
beginning when the youth were aged 9–10. We explored stability of exposure, co-occurrence across different types of violence
exposure, and associations with co-occurring risk factors. Approximately 30–45% of youth reported intermittent exposure over
the 3 years. In addition to overlap among types of violence exposure within the family, we found overlap between parent-to-youth
aggression and community violence, an association that was exacerbated in families where fathers reported high levels of global
distress symptoms. Mother-to-youth, father-to-youth, and community violence related to youth behavior problems beyond the
contextual risk factors of low income, stressful life events, and parents’ global distress symptoms. These results highlight
the importance of examining violence longitudinally, across multiple types, and with attention to contextual factors. 相似文献

The contention of this paper is that the context of social and therapeutic problems is critical to their resolution, and that many of them stem from historical and structural injustice. It focuses on the contextual issues of cultural, gender, and socioeconomic equity as providing important insights into authentic notions of social inclusion and well-being, and encourages therapists, service providers, researchers, and policy makers to take responsibility to ensure that these injustices are addressed, and become part of the public discourse about the sources and solutions of endemic social problems. Critique and deconstruction of institutional power in our public, private, and voluntary services is encouraged in a manner that honors diversity and enables sensitive therapy, other forms of service delivery and policy making that genuinely reflect the range of cultural, gender, and socioeconomic experiences of citizens. 相似文献

Multidimensional Family Therapy HIV/STD Risk-Reduction Intervention: An Integrative Family-Based Model for Drug-Involved Juvenile Offenders 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

Drug and juvenile justice involved youths show remarkably high rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/sexually transmitted disease (STD) risk behaviors. However, existing interventions aimed at reducing adolescent HIV risk behavior have rarely targeted these vulnerable young adolescents, and many approaches focus on individual-level change without attention to family or contextual influences. We describe a new, family-based HIV/STD prevention model that embeds HIV/STD focused multifamily groups within an adolescent drug abuse and delinquency evidence-based treatment, Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT). The approach has been evaluated in a multisite randomized clinical trial with juvenile justice involved youths in the National Institute on Drug Abuse Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies ( http://www.cjdats.org ). Preliminary baseline to 6-month outcomes are promising. We describe research on family risk and protective factors for adolescent problem behaviors, and offer a rationale for family-based approaches to reduce HIV/STD risk in this population. We describe the development and implementation of the Multidimensional Family Therapy HIV/STD risk-reduction intervention (MDFT-HIV/STD) in terms of using multifamily groups and their integration in standard MDFT and also offers a clinical vignette. The potential significance of this empirically based intervention development work is high; MDFT-HIV/STD is the first model to address largely unmet HIV/STD prevention and sexual health needs of substance abusing juvenile offenders within the context of a family-oriented evidence-based intervention. 相似文献

The study assessed the effects of war captivity on posttraumatic stress symptoms and marital adjustment among Prisoners of War (POWs) from the Yom Kippur War. It was hypothesized that men's perception of level of forgiveness mediates the relation between posttraumatic symptoms and marital adjustment. The sample consisted of 157 Israeli veterans divided into 3 groups: 21 POWs with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), 58 former POWs without PTSD, and 70 control veterans. The findings indicated that former POWs with PTSD reported lower levels of marital satisfaction and forgiveness than veterans in the other 2 groups. In addition, men's perception of level of forgiveness mediated the relationship between their posttraumatic symptoms and their marital adjustment. The theoretical and clinical implications of these results are discussed. 相似文献

Past research has emphasised the importance of children’s appraisals of the threat posed by parent conflict for understanding
links between interparental conflict and child outcomes. However, little is known about what it is that children actually
find threatening about parent conflict. Children (n = 236) aged 10–16 years were recruited to examine the relative contribution of four specific threat subtypes—fear of parent
conflict escalating, fear of being drawn into parent conflict, fear of parent conflict resulting in family breakdown, and
fear of parent conflict disrupting parent/child attachment relationships—in explaining links between interparental conflict
and child internalising adjustment. Results showed that children’s worries about being drawn into parent conflict mediated
the relationship between interparental conflict and child internalising adjustment. Fear of interparental conflict disrupting
parent/child attachment bonds mediated the relationship between interparental conflict and child internalising problems for
girls, but not boys. Results are discussed in terms of the importance of considering multiple dimensions of threat for advancing
understanding of the processes underlying the interparental conflict/child adjustment relationship.

The number of states in the United States that formally credential marital and family therapists has tripled to 31 during the last decade. This paper reviews and compares the basic licensure and certification requirements in these states, and explores a number of broad issues currently confronting the field of marital and family therapy regulation. Several recommendations for improving the quality of MFT regulation are also provided.president of the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards. 相似文献
