We examined the utility of social cognitive variables in the longitudinal prediction of academic persistence and success of engineering students. The participants, 908 students enrolled in engineering majors at two state universities, completed measures of academic support, self-efficacy, outcome expectations, interests, satisfaction, positive affect, and intended persistence at the end of each of their first four semesters. In the current study, students' first and second semester responses were used to predict persistence and grade performance in engineering by the end of six semesters. Path analytic findings indicated that second-semester persistence intentions, satisfaction with the major, self-efficacy, and social support each produced direct paths to persistence. Objective ability (mathematics SAT scores), outcome expectations, and interests were linked to persistence indirectly via their relations to other variables in the model. In addition, self-efficacy and objective ability jointly predicted grade performance. Results were stable across gender and racial/ethnic groups. Implications for research and practice on academic adjustment in engineering are considered. 相似文献

Two prominent models of values, one in work and the other in life, were examined as they each related to the dimensions underlying the Spherical Model of Interests (Tracey & Rounds, 1996) as measured by the Personal Globe Inventory (PGI; Tracey, 2002). The technique of external property vector fitting was utilized to plot the value constructs onto two- and three-dimensional interest structures in a sample of 206 college students. Results, when compared across both theoretical and empirical definitions of interest space, indicated that all work values and fewer basic values related to two dimensions, but that only the work value of Achievement and the life value of Power related to the Prestige dimension. Implications for research and for assessment that involves integrating the results of values and interest inventories are discussed. 相似文献

One strategy commonly used to simplify the joint interpretation of interest and confidence inventories is the use of cutoff scores to classify individuals dichotomously as having high or low levels of confidence and interest, respectively. The present study examined the adequacy of cutoff scores currently recommended for the joint interpretation of the Strong Interest Inventory (SII: Donnay, Morris, Schaubhut, & Thompson, 2005) and the Skills Confidence Inventory (SCI:
[Betz, Borgen et al., 1996] and [Betz et al., 2005]). Cutoff score criteria were evaluated based on a sample of college students and employed adults (n = 1000), and cross-validated with a second sample of college students (n = 1, 149) who completed an experimental measure of RIASEC interests and confidence. Results were interpreted in the context of social cognitive career theory (Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994) by testing predictions regarding the relative frequency of individuals with either matched or mismatched levels of interest and confidence. 相似文献

Conflict of interest policies in science and medical journals: Editorial practices and author disclosures 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
This study examines the extent to which scientific and biomedical journals have adopted conflict of interest (COI) policies
for authors, and whether the adoption and content of such policies leads to the publishing of authors’ financial interest
disclosure statements by such journals. In particular, it reports the results of a survey of journal editors about their practices
regarding COI disclosures. About 16 percent of 1396 highly ranked scientific and biomedical journals had COI policies in effect
during 1997. Less than 1 percent of the articles published during that year in the journals with COI policies contained any
disclosures of author personal financial interests while nearly 66 percent of the journals had zero disclosures of author
personal financial interests. Nearly three fourths of journal editors surveyed usually publish author disclosure statements
suggesting that low rates of personal financial disclosures are either a result of low rates of author financial interest
in the subject matter of their publications or poor compliance by authors to the journals’ COI policies. 相似文献

Disclosure of financial interests in scientific research is the centerpiece of the new conflict of interest regulations issued
by the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Science Foundation that became effective October 1, 1995. Several scientific
journals have also established financial disclosure requirements for contributors.
This paper measures the frequency of selected financial interests held among authors of certain types of scientific publications
and assesses disclosure practices of authors. We examined 1105 university authors (first and last cited) from Massachusetts
institutions whose 789 articles, published in 1992, appeared in 14 scientific and medical journals.
Authors are said to “possess a financial interest” if they are listed as inventors in a patent or patent application closely
related to their published work; serve on a scientific advisory board of a biotechnology company; or are officers, directors,
or major shareholders (beneficial owner of 10% or more of stock issued) in a firm that has commercial interests related to
their research. Applying the criteria to the reference population of journals and Massachusetts academic authors, we measured
the following frequencies for lead authors: .20 for serving on a scientific advisory board; .07 for being an officer, director,
or major shareholder in a biotechnology firm; and .22 for being listed as an inventor in a related patent or patent application.
The joint frequency of articles in the journals reviewed with a lead author that meets one of the three conditions is .34.
Implications of these results for the new conflict of interest guidelines and disclosure policies are discussed. 相似文献

A population-based randomized intervention trial for the prevention of conduct problems (i.e., oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder) is described. The LIFT (Linking the Interests of Families and Teachers) intervention was designed for all first- and fifth-grade elementary school boys and girls and their families living in at-risk neighborhoods characterized by high rates of juvenile delinquency. The 10-week intervention strategy was carefully targeted at proximal and malleable antecedents in three social domains that were identified by a developmental model of conduct problems. From 12 elementary schools, 671 first and fifth graders and their families participated either in the theory-based universal preventive intervention or in a control condition. The intervention consisted of parent training, a classroom-based social skills program, a playground behavioral program, and systematic communication between teachers and parents. A multiple measure assessment strategy was used to evaluate participant satisfaction and participation, fidelity of implementation, and the immediate impacts of the program on targeted antecedents. 相似文献

RIASEC interests were assessed in grades 8, 10, and 12 on a large national sample of 69,987 college bound students. Random samples of 1000 were drawn to represent each of the major US ethnic groups (African, Asian, Native, Mexican, Latino (non Mexican), Anglo, and Multiracial Americans) and interests were examined as they varied across time, ethnicity, and gender with respect to structure, mean changes, stability, clarity, and interest-occupational choice congruence. Results indicate that the structure of interests did not vary as a function of time, gender or ethnicity. The pattern of interests was fairly stable and similar across all ethnic groups and both genders. Congruence and clarity increased in 10th grade but both decreased in 12th grade suggesting a time of re-examination. 相似文献
