The authors examined psychosocial correlates of drug and alcohol abuse in 462 hospitalized adolescents, and the extent to which these associations may be affected by gender or by substance type. Participants completed a battery of psychometrically-sound, self-report measures of psychological functioning, environmental stress, drug abuse, and alcohol abuse. Four multiple regression analyses were conducted to determine the joint and independent predictors of drug abuse and alcohol abuse, for males and for females. Multiple regression analysis revealed that seven variables--age, depression, impulsivity, low self-esteem, delinquent predisposition, low peer insecurity, and history of child abuse--jointly predicted both drug and alcohol abuse, for both males and females. However, several differences were found with respect to which variables made independent contributions to the predictive models--with only delinquent predisposition making a significant independent contribution for all four conditions. We found distinct patterns of psychosocial predictor variables for drug and alcohol abuse, as well as distinct patterns for males and females. These results may reflect differing risk factors for drug abuse and alcohol abuse in adolescent psychiatric patients--and differing risk factors for males and females. A multi-informant study investigated the association between deception capacities and subtypes of aggression in a young early childhood sample (M = 44.65 months of age, SD = 13.39, N = 64). A newly developed teacher report of deception had appropriate psychometric properties (reliability, concurrent validity, and construct validity). Recently introduced observational methods of physical and relational aggression were reliable and valid with this sample. Findings indicated that both physical and relational aggression were associated with concurrent deception. For boys only, physical aggression uniquely predicted deception, controlling for the variance associated with relational aggression. In addition, relational aggression predicted deception above and beyond the role of physical aggression for the entire sample. 相似文献

Several studies have shown that blind and sighted individuals are equally able to generate and process visuo-spatial images. However, differences emerge when active manipulation of information is required. A similar distinction has been reported in studies investigating gender-related preferences in visuo-spatial tasks indicating a male advantage in active tasks only. The present study investigates gender-related visuo-spatial preference in congenitally blind people by using active and passive working memory tasks. The results show significant effects due to gender and blindness; nevertheless, gender effects are more pronounced in the blind group and maximised in the active task. These data are interpreted within a theoretical framework that accounts for the different factors modulating the development of visuo-spatial abilities. 相似文献

The present research investigated whether competition influences children's artistic creativity and intrinsic motivation toward an art activity. Study 1 tested the hypothesis that boys' creativity would be enhanced by competition, while girls' creativity would be undermined. Fifty children (aged 6–10) made paper collages in one of two conditions; half competed for prizes and half did not. Results supported our hypotheses, and further showed that when children self-segregated by gender, the impact of competition was much more pronounced. Study 2 was designed to clarify the unexpected gender-segregation finding from Study 1. The Children's Sex Role Inventory [Boldizar, J.P. (1991). Assessing sex typing and androgyny in children: the Children's Sex Role Inventory. Developmental Psychology, 27, 505–515] was administered to 143 children (aged 6–11). One week later, these children made paper collages in one of four conditions; in addition to manipulating competition, assigned seating ensured that half of children were segregated by gender and half were not. Following the collage activity, an intrinsic and extrinsic motivation questionnaire was administered. Masculine children reported higher levels of intrinsic motivation when competing and when segregated by gender; they also reported higher levels of extrinsic motivation, especially when segregated by gender. The study examined the satisfactions and regrets of midlife parents at a specific family life-cycle milestone, their child’s
graduation from high school. The purpose was to compare mothers’ and fathers’ appraisals of the gains and losses associated
with this developmental transition and turning point in their parenting roles. A total of 260 parents (147 mothers; 113 fathers)
who had a child graduating from high school responded in writing to open-ended questions regarding their satisfactions and
regrets at this stage of their lives. Responses were coded to identify themes salient to these parents. Results indicate that
both mothers and fathers are aware of both the gains and losses at this time in their family life cycle, but they differed
in how they expect to be affected by the transition. Mothers’ responses suggest that they are anticipating and planning for
the transition. Fathers’ responses suggest they are less aware of the personal implications of this family transition and

The current study tested the development of working memory involvement in children's arithmetic strategy selection and strategy efficiency. To this end, an experiment in which the dual-task method and the choice/no-choice method were combined was administered to 10- to 12-year-olds. Working memory was needed in retrieval, transformation, and counting strategies, but the ratio between available working memory resources and arithmetic task demands changed across development. More frequent retrieval use, more efficient memory retrieval, and more efficient counting processes reduced the working memory requirements. Strategy efficiency and strategy selection were also modified by individual differences such as processing speed, arithmetic skill, gender, and math anxiety. Short-term memory capacity, in contrast, was not related to children's strategy selection or strategy efficiency. 相似文献

Two studies examined the effect of gender stereotypes on students’ recollection of their school marks in stereotypically feminine (arts) and masculine (mathematics) domains. As predicted, the results of Study 1 indicated that the more students believed in gender stereotypes prior to recall, the more they biased their reported marks, compared to their actual marks, in a stereotype-consistent way (female students underestimated their marks in mathematics and male students underestimated their marks in arts). Study 2, in which the salience of gender stereotypes was manipulated prior to recall, yielded similar findings. The recall of school marks was more stereotype-consistent in a condition of high salience than in a condition of low salience of gender stereotypes. Gender differences in speed of perceptual comparison, of picture-plane mental rotation, and in switching costs between trials that do and do not require mental rotation, were investigated as a function of stimulus material with a total sample size of N=360. Alphanumeric characters, PMA symbols, animal drawings, polygons and 3D cube figures were used with an otherwise completely equivalent experimental design in which age and speed-based IQ were comparable across male and female groups. Small gender-related differences in speed of perceptual comparison were found with the magnitude as well as the direction depending upon the stimulus material. Polygons were the only material that produced substantial and reliable gender differences in mental rotation speed, and additionally revealed gender differences in switching costs. Thus, whereas gender differences in paper-pencil mental rotation tests constitute an empirical reality, the generalization that men outperform women in the speed of mental rotation was not supported in the present experiment. 相似文献

The present study aimed to explore sexist attitudes in young people and to investigate the role of these ideologies in the
contribution of boys and girls to housework. For this purpose, 139 Spanish high school students (67 females and 72 males)
responded to the ASI and AMI scales (Glick and Fiske in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 70:491–512, 1996, Psychology
of Women Quarterly 23:519–536, 1999) and assessed their contribution to housework in tasks considered traditionally done by
women (highly gender-typed) or more neutral tasks (sex-neutral). Results showed that girls contributed significantly more
to housework than boys. In addition, correlation analyses showed that benevolent sexism toward women, men and hostility toward
men were significant related to highly gender typed tasks only in the female sample. This result shows the relevance of sexist

Social roles create conflicting behavioral expectations for female negotiators; however, virtual negotiations reduce social
pressures. This paper reviews theoretical explanations on why men and women might differ in negotiations that occur through
email, telephone, or video. Forty-three negotiation studies comparing face-to-face and virtual negotiations were examined
for gender differences. All studies were reported in English but not limited to US participants. While many reports omitted
gender information, meta-analytic findings supported the prediction that women would be more hostile in virtual compared to
face-to-face negotiations, as well as finding no hostility difference for men between virtual and face-to-face negotiations.
While negotiators overall were more successful face-to-face than virtually, results separated by gender did not find this
