Interdisciplinary partnerships foster innovation to address pressing social problems. This paper describes an interdisciplinary partnership called the Chicago Food System Collaborative (CFSC) composed of a team of partners from four academic institutions and three community-based organizations representing a total of eight disciplines that included: community development and community organizing, community psychology, geography, nursing, nutrition, public health, sociology, and urban planning and policy. Partners came together to address the issue of access to healthy foods and nutrition in a working class African American neighborhood. We analyze and discuss the core principles that guided the partnership and its impact across three dimensions: understanding through interdisciplinary action research, building capacity, and facilitating innovations in practices and policies. Despite the challenges of interdisciplinary partnerships, the potential benefits and impact of such efforts reflect their value as a comprehensive approach to addressing complex social problems. 相似文献

This essay analyzes neo-liberal economic agreements and legal and political frameworks or what has been called the “new constitutionalism,”
a governance framework that empowers market forces to reshape economic and social development worldwide. The article highlights
some consequences of new constitutionalism for caring institutions specifically, and for what feminists call social reproduction
more generally: the biological reproduction of the species; the reproduction of labor power; and the reproduction of social
institutions and processes associated with the creation and maintenance of communities. New constitutional governance frameworks
fundamentally reshape conditions under which the care of human beings takes place. Caring institutions once governed by enabling
professions geared to universal care are now determined increasingly by market values and private forces, and driven directly
by the profit motive. This is one of the reasons why neo-liberalism is increasingly contested in both the North and the global

School-based mental health (SBMH) programs and services have grown progressively in the United States in the past two decades,
related in part to increased recognition of their advantages and heightened federal support. However, SBMH is an emerging
field, with many issues needing attention. This introductory article provides a context for the special issue by highlighting
the importance of increased conceptual clarity about SBMH, enhanced mental health—education systems integration, and advancement
of the SBMH research base. Key elements for success of SBMH programs and services are discussed, as underscored recently by
the report of the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health (2003) and other important initiatives. These elements include (a)
school–family–community agency partnerships, (b) commitment to a full continuum of mental health education, mental health
promotion, assessment, problem prevention, early intervention, and treatment, and (c) services for all youth, including those
in general and special education. A synopsis of the articles in the special issue is provided, emphasizing their conceptual
and empirical contributions to delivery and sustainability of effective mental health practices in schools. 相似文献

In 2016, China enacted its two-child policy, further lifted to a three-child policy in 2021, in response to low birth rates and imbalanced sex ratios resulting from the almost 40-year one-child policy. Despite this, China's birthrate is at a historic low as fewer parents are having children. Now more than ever, inductive explorations are needed to understand what motivates Chinese parents to have first and second children in the post-one-child policy era, particularly explorations that situate individual decision-making within the larger social context. Individual and relational choices occur in larger sociopolitical contexts. Understanding these “personal” actions involves considering how micro and macro processes inform each other. In this study, we elicited qualitative responses from Chinese mothers (N = 117) with two children in early childhood (firstborn ≤8 years old) from Liao Ning province. Most mothers were well educated, employed, and married to children's fathers. Using inductive thematic analysis procedures, we coded qualitative responses about the factors that motivated mothers to have first and second children. Our data revealed that (a) mothers expressed different reasons for having firstborns compared to secondborns, and (b) decision-making occurred against a backdrop of interacting micro-level and macro-level influences (e.g., cultural norms, national policy changes). In particular, mothers described the decision to have secondborns as more deliberative than with firstborns, considering long-term benefits siblinghood and shared demands of elderly caregiving. If efforts to stimulate the national birthrate are likely to succeed, policymakers should consider micro-level as well as macro-level factors that shape mothers' childbearing decision-making. 相似文献

This research examines how the method of selecting women leaders affects other women's leadership interest. The results of three experiments (N = 1,015) indicated that only when women leaders were selected due to merit, not quota-based policies, did they boost female participants’ interest in a leadership position. These reactions were mediated by perceptions of the woman leader's deservingness of her position (Studies 1–3) and consequent acceptance as a role model (Studies 2 and 3). Accordingly, success information validating quota-based selected leaders’ competence provided a boost in leadership interest equal to that of merit-based selected leaders (Study 2). For male participants, quota but not merit-based selected women leaders lowered interest in leadership due to their pessimistic assessment of the probability of being selected (Study 1). These results suggest that a wise implementation of quota regulations includes validating women's competence so they are perceived as deserving of their leader roles and can thus serve as inspiring role models. 相似文献

Increasing numbers of engineers from developed countries are employed during some part of their careers in lesser-developed
nations (LDN’s), or they may design products for use in LDN’s. Yet determining the implications of professional engineering
codes for engineers’ conduct in such settings can be difficult. Conditions are often substantially different from those in
developed countries, where the codes were formulated. In this paper I explore the implications of what I call the “welfare
requirement” in engineering codes for professional engineering conduct in LDN’s.

The precautionary principle is a widely accepted policy norm for decision making under uncertainty in environmental management, However, some of the traditional ways of ensuring trustworthy results used in environmental science and of communicating them work contrary to the general goal of providing the political system and the public with as good an input as possible in the decision making process. For example, it is widely accepted that scientists should only communicate results fulfilling the traditional scientific standard for hypothesis testing. The need for introducing complementary norms in environmental science is illustrated by a recent discussion among scientists on how the precautionary principle should be used in the context of marine biological studies. This discussion highlights the importance of the use of statistical power in communicating scientific results to decision makers and to the general public as well as to the scientific peers. We argue that it would be unethical to report only certainties—because of the need of early warnings—and it would in the same way be unethical to hide the uncertainties. Environmental science can make a better contribution to environmental decision making, if the available knowledge is communicated in a manner which allows for insight on how strong the evidence is. 相似文献

Authorship on publications has been described as a “meal ticket” for researchers in academic settings. Given the importance
of authorship, inappropriate publication credit is a pertinent ethical issue. This paper presents an overview of authorship
problems and policies intended to address them. Previous work has identified three types of inappropriate authorship practices:
plagiarism, giving unwarranted credit and failure to give expected credit. Guidelines from universities, journals and professional
organizations provide standards about requirements of authors and may describe inappropriate practices; to a lesser extent,
they provide guidance for determining authorship order. While policies on authorship may be helpful in some circumstances,
they are not panaceas. Formal guidelines may not address serious power imbalances in working relationships and may be difficult
to enforce in the face of particular departmental or institutional cultures. In order to develop more effective and useful
guidelines, we should gain more knowledge about how students and faculty members perceive policies as well as their understanding
of how policies will best benefit collaborators. 相似文献

Psychological science has a great deal to contribute to social welfare in all societies, because the world's most pressing social problems are behavioral in nature—violence, hunger, drug abuse, environmental pollution, low worker productivity, poor educational outcomes, and so forth. Thus, psychological research can inform public policies to improve approaches to these important social problems. The relationship of psychological science to public policy is often troubled, however, by misunderstandings about the role of science in the policy making process. Many scientists fear that their research results will be "misused" by others whose values differ from those of scientists. Thus, psychologists are reluctant to publish research results that can be used to support policies contrary to their own values and hesitate to ask research questions that can generate politically incorrect results. In this article, I argue that psychological science has a primary responsibility to ask dangerous questions and to report results honestly, without fear of their use; that research is not translated directly into public policies; and that psychological science should not be perverted either by fear of political consequences or by compromising truth in a quest for power. Three research examples are given to illustrate the different faces of temptation to pervert psychological science in a misguided hope that scientists' own values will be reflected in public policies. 相似文献
