Family ties after divorce: long-term implications for children 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Drawing on the data from the longitudinal Binuclear Family Study, 173 grown children were interviewed 20 years after their parents' divorce. This article addresses two basic questions: (1) What impact does the relationship between parents have on their children 20 years after the divorce? and (2) When a parent remarries or cohabits, how does it impact a child's sense of family? The findings show that the parental subsystem continues to impact the binuclear family 20 years after marital disruption by exerting a strong influence on the quality of relationships within the family system. Children who reported that their parents were cooperative also reported better relationships with their parents, grandparents, stepparents, and siblings. Over the course of 20 years, most of the children experienced the remarriage of one or both parents, and one third of this sample remembered the remarriage as more stressful than the divorce. Of those who experienced the remarriage of both of their parents, two thirds reported that their father's remarriage was more stressful than their mother's. When children's relationships with their fathers deteriorated after divorce, their relationships with their paternal grandparents, stepmother, and stepsiblings were distant, negative, or nonexistent. Whether family relationships remain stable, improve, or get worse is dependent on a complex interweaving of many factors. The reliability and validity of Hoffman and Kloska’s (1995) Gender-based Attitudes toward Marital Roles (GATMR) and Gender-based
Attitudes toward Child Rearing (GATCR) were assessed for a sample of Mexican American mothers and fathers (n = 167) of fifth-grade children in a large metropolitan area in the southwestern United States. Factor analysis was conducted,
and the results suggest that the 6-item GATMR is conceptually distinct and reliable for this ethnic group. Correlation of
GATMR scores for mothers and fathers with divisions of family labor suggest good validity. A 5-item revised GATCR demonstrated
modest reliability and good construct validity. The value of these scales for work with Mexican American families is noted.
Theoretical implications for gender socialization are explored, and suggestions for further research are offered.

We investigated the relationship between family structure and substance use in a sample of 2,138 public middle school students
in a southern state. The CDC Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey was utilized and adjusted logistic regression models
were created separately for four race/gender categories (African American females/males, and Caucasian females/males) to examine
associations among selected drug use variables (tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and inhalants). Analyses were adjusted for social
economic status. Results suggested differences (p ≤ .05) among race/gender groups for the protective effect of living in an intact family (both mother and father, real or
adoptive) regarding substance use among middle school students. In addition, family structure appeared to have a stronger
relationship with substance use for Caucasians as opposed to African American adolescents. Caucasian adolescents living in
cohabitated family households were more likely to report substance use, when compared to those living in intact two-parent
households. Adolescents who are undergoing parental divorce may need special attention as they transition into new family

Parenting practices are major influences on incidents of juvenile delinquency. Stress experienced by parents of children with
behavioral problems is a leading contributor to parenting practices. We investigated the extent to which parental stress was
reduced by participation in an established multiple group family intervention, the Family Solutions Program, developed to
reduce recidivism among juvenile offenders. We also examined parent stress by gender, ethnicity, dropout rates, intervention
benefits at 3-month follow-up, single- versus two-parent households, and across dimensions of family functioning and parent-adolescent
communication. Parents reported greater levels of parent stress than non-clinical parents prior to intervention. Parental
stress did diminish in response to intervention, but not until follow-up to intervention completion. No differences were found
on initial parent stress level between completers and non-completers of the intervention or between parent stress and gender
or ethnicity of the parent; however, single-parent household was associated with significantly higher levels of parent stress.
Family functioning was significantly negatively correlated with parental stress. Finally, open communication between juvenile
first offenders and their parents improved significantly in response to the intervention both at post-intervention and at

This paper describes the application of family psychology to the primary care setting—in service, education and training,
and scholarship. Primary care family psychology integrates family systems with biopsychosocial theory, yielding an approach
that is uniquely suited to the generalist demands of primary care. This approach attends especially to the effects of relationships
on health and healthcare, using the family as a potential resource to the patient just as the healthcare team is a resource
to the clinician. Training opportunities in primary care family psychology are growing. The University of Rochester School
of Medicine and Dentistry fellowship is described as an example, with core primary care family psychology training in four
different clinical sites: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics/Gynecology.

Empathy is considered a positive aspect of caregiving, although in certain circumstances, being empathic might increase the burden of caregivers. The current study assessed the associations between empathy, parental efficacy, and family burden among parents of children who were hospitalized in a psychiatric unit. Specifically, we examined whether the association between empathy and family burden was moderated by the parents’ sense of self-efficacy. Seventy parents of children with psychiatric disorders, hospitalized in an inpatient psychiatric unit, filled out questionnaires of empathy, parental efficacy, and family burden. Results supported a moderating role of parental efficacy between empathy and family burden (interaction effect: β = −1.72, p = .0406). Specifically, empathy was positively related to family burden among parents with low self-efficacy (conditional effect = 0.70, p = .032) and negatively related to family burden among parents with high self-efficacy (conditional effect = −0.39, p = N.S). Implications for practice include the importance of self-efficacy and address the possible negative implications of empathy among parents of children treated in a psychiatric hospital. 相似文献

This study analyzed a case of compulsive buying based on the grounded theory method. The client was a 24 year-old female Korean student who showed compulsive buying and excessive credit card use. The family therapy was performed between March 2001 and May 2004 in Korea. This study used the software “Atlas.ti,” producing 121 open codings and seven axis categories which included the following: (1) communication issues with friends or family members, (2) sibling relationships, (3) mother’s parenting, (4) interparental relationships, (5) mother’s communication style, (6) stress, and (7) compulsive buying and credit card use. Attention to diversity is required in Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education-accredited programs, yet not much research exists regarding the effectiveness of graduate training on therapists’ multicultural counseling competencies. In this study, 12 students enrolled in a masters-level diversity class were given pre- and post-tests of their multicultural counseling competencies. Results showed that students significantly increased their multicultural awareness, knowledge, and skills after completing the diversity class. The discussion includes implications for educators who seek to improve students’ multicultural counseling competencies. 相似文献

Although cognitive behavioral spectrum approaches with individual children are plentiful and demonstrate effectiveness, cognitive behaviorally oriented clinicians are frequently left to their own devices when it comes to treating families. Cognitive behavioral family therapy is a relatively recent development and there are precious few reports of its clinical use. This article presents a conceptual foundation and clinical rubrics for the practice of cognitive behavioral family therapy. Basic theoretical background information is presented and places the therapeutic processes and procedures in a proper context. Session structure in cognitive behavioral therapy is illustrated and the way it propels therapeutic momentum and adds focus to each session is explained. Rudimentary processes of self-monitoring, self-instruction, rational analysis, and behavioral enactment are described and augmented with case material. Families are influential systems and may be an important context in which to consider the stress and coping process. To date, many studies have focused on modeling the stress and coping process for the individual, isolated from the family. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to investigate a cross-sectional stress and coping model for HIV-positive African-American mothers recruited from HIV service facilities in South Florida (n=214) and their family members (n=294). Avoidance coping was hypothesized to mediate the relationship between stress and psychological distress. In addition, the family average of individual stress was hypothesized to moderate the relationship between avoidance coping and psychological distress. For all constructs, individuals reported on themselves and multilevel modeling techniques were used to account for similarities between members of the same family. The estimated mediation effect was significant. Aggregated family stress significantly moderated the relationship between avoidance coping and psychological distress. This study suggests that individuals exhibit different relationships between avoidance coping and psychological outcomes and that average stress reported by members of a family moderates the relationship between avoidance coping and psychological distress. 相似文献
