Commenting on perceptual similarities between objects stands out as an important linguistic achievement, one that may pave the way towards noticing and commenting on more abstract relational commonalities between objects. To explore whether having a conventional linguistic system is necessary for children to comment on different types of similarity comparisons, we observed four children who had not been exposed to usable linguistic input - deaf children whose hearing losses prevented them from learning spoken language and whose hearing parents had not exposed them to sign language. These children developed gesture systems that have language-like structure at many different levels. Here we ask whether the deaf children used their gestures to comment on similarity relations and, if so, which types of relations they expressed. We found that all four deaf children were able to use their gestures to express similarity comparisons (point to cat + point to tiger) resembling those conveyed by 40 hearing children in early gesture + speech combinations (cat + point to tiger). However, the two groups diverged at later ages. Hearing children, after acquiring the word like, shifted from primarily expressing global similarity (as in cat/tiger) to primarily expressing single-property similarity (as in crayon is brown like my hair). In contrast, the deaf children, lacking an explicit term for similarity, continued to primarily express global similarity. The findings underscore the robustness of similarity comparisons in human communication, but also highlight the importance of conventional terms for comparison as likely contributors to routinely expressing more focused similarity relations. 相似文献

Heterogeneity of re-offending patterns was studied in a group of 287 male early onset offenders who were first arrested before
age 12. By combining data on the frequency and severity of offending as registered by the police over a 5-year follow-up period,
three delinquent trajectories were identified; low, escalating, and high level re-offenders. Predicting group membership by
individual and environmental characteristics known to the police at the time of the first arrest proved difficult. Compared
to low level re-offenders, escalators were older and more often came from disadvantaged neighborhoods. High level re-offenders
were also older at onset, more often had a non-Western ethnic background, and initially committed more vandalism. Furthermore,
at the first police encounter, the police reacted more severely towards those who later became high level re-offenders. Finally,
high and escalating re-offenders more often had other adverse outcomes, such as criminal victimization and Child Welfare Agency
involvement.

We used data from a large, longitudinal study of children in the community, the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth
Development, to examine how well earlier measures of delay capacity, inhibitory control, planning, and attention predicted
symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) assessed in third grade. Children with elevated symptoms of both
inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity (n = 57) and with inattentive symptoms only (n = 80) were identified via mother and teacher reports using the “or” rule, as were children without significant symptoms (n = 790). Multinomial logistic regression analyses indicated that poorer performance on earlier measures of resistance to temptation,
delay of gratification, response inhibition, attention, and planning obtained from 36 months to 1st grade predicted membership
in the two symptom groups relative to the comparison group in 3rd grade, albeit with somewhat different patterns of predictors.
Controls for 36 month school readiness and externalizing symptoms indicated that these results were generally robust and not
an artifact of initial cognitive or behavioral differences. Implications for developmental models of ADHD are discussed.

There is much current interest in how adverse experiences early in life might affect certain elements of physiological, behavioral, and psychological functioning across the lifespan. Recent conceptual frameworks for studying the effects of early experience have involved constructs such as experience-expectant, experience-dependent, and experience-adaptive plasticity. The latter construct is related to comparative models of developmental programming which posit the persistence of biological adjustments to the early caregiving environment. We briefly review such models and their translational implications. We then turn to human development and focus on the effects of large changes in children’s life courses as tests of hypotheses related to early experience effects. In particular, the effect of early institutionalization on children’s brain and behavioral development after changes to adoptive families or foster care is used as an example of a research area in which programming hypotheses have been proposed. 相似文献

The present study examined the psychometric properties of the self-report version of the Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire-Revised
(EATQ-R), which is a scale for measuring reactive and regulative temperament traits, in a large sample of children and adolescents
(N = 1,055). The results indicated that the internal consistency was acceptable for most EATQ-R temperament scales. Further,
principal components analysis of the instrument yielded a structure with nine components, which generally reflected the temperament
scales of the EATQ-R. The test–retest stability of the scale was moderate to good, whereas the parent–child agreement was
rather low. Finally, the scale correlated in a theoretically meaningful way with children’s self-reports of personality and
psychopathology. It can be concluded that the EATQ-R is a useful scale for measuring aspects of reactive and regulative temperament
in children and adolescents, although there is certainly room for improving the instrument.

Sharp debates exist today about the appropriate relationship between religious organizations and government, with views ranging from Christian nationalism to strict secularists. This essay explores a mediating position expressed in the conceptual phrase that religious bodies should “work with civil authorities in areas of mutual endeavor, maintaining institutional separation and functional interaction.” The essay uses historical and ecclesial sources to describe the struggles and underpinnings that lead to this position and then unpacks its meaning and import. While originating from within the conceptual and ecclesial American Lutheran tradition, the essay points to this approach as a public proposal for sound relationship between religious communities and political authority in the United States. 相似文献

This article explores shame and moral agency in relationship to the climate catastrophe, and the moral situation of the world's relatively high-consuming people who are implicated in greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. The author complexifies that situation in the conundrums of climate colonialism, climate racism, structural sin, and the moral ambiguities they raise, including such questions as: “What are the moral demands of climate sin grounded in historically rooted economic systems that one did not create but upon which the material conditions of one's life depend? To what extent, if any, is the individual morally accountable for the social structures of which one is a part and from which one benefits?” From there, the essay moves to its central question. It is whether shame theory might help to enable moral agency for what is desperately needed now by people of climate privilege and economic privilege in the North Atlantic world—wise and courageous action to address climate change and climate injustice. The article probes shame theory for clues to what disables moral agency and what catalyzes it. The author finds in shame theory pathways for transforming shame-based moral inertia into moral agency. The 2010 U. S. Religious Census: Religious Congregations and Membership Survey (RCMS) is the most comprehensive picture of U.S. religious life, county by county. How thorough is the RCMS in covering local religious groups? To answer this question, three county snapshots were performed with collected data compared to the RCMS 2010 reported numbers. Data suggest that there has been an underreport by as much as 25 percent of the number of local congregations in these counties. New and emerging religious movements and denominations as well as ethnic congregations comprise much of this percentage, making it more imperative for scholars to develop methodologies and frameworks in order to capture these “others” and invisible churches in America. 相似文献

BackgroundHome environment provides stimulation and learning opportunities required for children’s early development. However, few studies have focused on the effects of home environment on left-behind children’s development in rural China. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between home environment and early childhood development of left-behind children under 3 years old in rural China.MethodsInformation about sociodemographic characteristics, caregivers’ mental health, home environment and children’s development was collected. Infant/Toddler Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment Inventory (IT-HOME) was used to assess home environment. Child’s development was evaluated with the Chinese version of the Ages & Stages Questionnaire - third edition.ResultsElevated caregivers’ depressive symptoms were associated with a higher risk of total suspected development delay. An increase of one score in the IT-HOME resulted in a 7% decrease in total suspected development delay. Higher scores in the dimensions of involvement and variety were associated with a lower risk of suspected development delay adjusting for covariates.ConclusionsOur results have implications for home-based intervention aiming at promoting nurturing care as well as caregivers’ mental health, which is required for early development of young left-behind children in rural areas of China. 相似文献
