This essay is about the connection of two worlds: the world "out there," and the re-created world seen on screen and experienced through religious myth and ritual. It is about the similarity between the way films are constructed and the way religious practices are constructed. Film and religion each begin with space and time, but re-create both: Film does this through cinematography, mise-en-scene, and editing, while religions achieve this by setting apart particular objects and periods of time, through the telling of stories, and the gathering together of people focused on a common object, text, or image. The hypothesis here is that by paying attention to the ways films are constructed, we can shed light on the ways religious myths and rituals are constructed, and vice versa. 相似文献

Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in American women. Data are lacking from representative samples of total populations
on the association of risk factors for breast cancer and religiousness. The sixth cycle of the National Survey of Family Growth
(NSFG VI) included 3,766 women aged 30–44 years with complete data on self-reported religiousness, and selected breast cancer
risk factors. Of women in the analysis, 1,008 reported having four or more breast cancer risk factors. Women who never attended
services were over seven times more likely to report having four or more risk factors than those who attended more than weekly
(P < 0.0001). After adjusting for age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, nativity, education and marital status by logistic regression,
women who never attended services were still over six times more likely to report having four or more risk factors (P < 0.0001). The combination of frequent attendance at religious services, very high importance of religion in daily life,
and self-identification as a Protestant evangelical was particularly protective. Multiple dimensions of religiousness are

In order to contribute to a growing international research programme concerned with the correlates, antecedents and consequences
of individual differences in attitude toward religion, the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity was translated into
Romanian and applied within a cultural context shaped by the Greek Orthodox tradition. Data provided by a sample of 158 students
(mainly in their late teens and early twenties) supported the internal consistency reliability, re-test reliability and construct
validity of this instrument and commended it for further use in studies conducted in Romania.
Portions of this research were conducted while the second author was at the “A.D. Xenopol” Public Library, Arad, Romania.

Fifty-eight undergraduates each recorded their three clearest autobiographical memories and answered questions about them. The resulting 174 memories were almost all rated to be of high personal importance, but low national importance. In contrast to published results of flashbulb memories cued by events which were specific, nationally important, surprising, and consequential, the ratings collected here covered the scales of surprise and consequentiality in a fairly uniform manner. The subjects also answered questions about memories cued by 20 events. For each subject, some of these memories were of ‘flashbulb’ clarity and some were not. The clearer memories were more surprising, consequential, and emotional, indicating that these factors are associated with, though not necessary for, vivid memories. 相似文献

An analogue setting for assessing dental fear involving a videotaped simulated dental operation was evaluated in terms of its capability of eliciting differential physiological arousal (Palmer Sweat Index) between high- and low-fear subjects, identified by self-reports of dental fear. Results showed high-fear subjects to exhibit significantly greater palmar sweating than did low-fear subjects, females to respond more than males, and a differential response across groups at different points during the simulated operation. High-fear subjects also gave verbal reports of greater physiological arousal and general anxiety while viewing the operation than did low-fear subjects. 相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relation of religion, defined in terms of religious affiliation, religious involvement and religious orientation, to the five factor model of personality as measured by the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised using a religiously heterogeneous sample of 1129 Canadian university students. Results indicate that NEO-PI-R Agreeableness and Conscientiousness domains are significantly related to and affected by religion as measured across all three operationalizations of the construct used, though some sex differences were observed. Contrary to expectation, Neuroticism was found to differ as a function of religious affiliation with persons, particularly females, reporting No Religion obtaining significantly higher scores than those persons reporting a formal religious institution for their affiliation. Findings involving Extraversion were also inconsistent with hypotheses; Extraversion did not significantly relate to any form of religion measured. Openness was found to be largely unassociated with religion except for a significant negative correlation with a measure of extrinsic religious orientation. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of the findings in relation to existing literature and Eysenck's hypothesis that religiousness is a function of conditionability and tender-minded attitudes. Limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are also overviewed. 相似文献
