Does the concept of evil deserve special formulation in the realm of psychoanalytic thought? In agreement with authors such as Meltzer (1992) and De Masi (2003) and through selected moments from a boy's long analysis, I will propose a definition of evil as a state of mind, characterized by disregard for the human quality of the object and the destruction of meaning and meaningfulness of life in and for others. Evil drains, perverts and strips symbols of intentions and goals, leaving them empty of emotional significance. In my patient, the state of mind that he called evil exerted a seductive appeal and was accompanied by a sadistic excitement that he elevated into a state of sexualized well‐being, which progressively perverted and destroyed emotional meaning, contributing to his confusion and desperation. Confronting this pathological configuration and describing the situation that I felt existed within his mind and between us, and rearticulating emotional meaning where it had been perverted, cannibalized or left empty, was the principal – and at times only – clinical instrument available to lead him out of his descent into nothingness.  相似文献

While Michael Walzer's distinction between preemptive and preventive wars offers important categories for current reflection upon the Bush Doctrine and the invasion of Iraq, it is often treated as a modern distinction without antecedent in the classical Christian just war tradition. This paper argues to the contrary that within Augustine's corpus there are passages in which he speaks about the use of violence in situations that we would classify today as preemptive and preventive military action. While I do not claim that Augustine makes an explicit distinction between the two types of war (such would be anachronistic), I will argue that based on examinations of De libero arbitrio I.v.11–12 and De civitate Dei I.30 Augustine's discussions of hypothetical cases or actual wars in history provide insights helpful for contemporary reflection on preemptive and preventive wars.  相似文献

Marriagelike homosexual relationships expose a division among ethicists following Aquinas. Those emphasizing natural law may call such relationships unnatural; those emphasizing the virtues may approve of relationships fostering love and justice. Natural law, the virtues, and homosexuality all show up in Aquinas's Commentary on Romans —untranslated and hardly cited. Romans 1:18 opens a discussion of justice. Verse 20 provides Aquinas's chief warrant for natural law. Verse 26 applies virtue and law to the vice against nature. But Aquinas's account also depends on Paul as an exemplar of virtue and on Aquinas's high regard for the Bible. Aquinas deploys natural law as a mode of biblical exegesis, not an alternative to it. In the De potentia , Aquinas considers how to proceed when nature and Scripture seem to conflict. The account does not settle, but rather makes more room for, dispute.  相似文献

The main theoretical position on fetishism remains that outlined by Freud, the splitting of the ego and castration anxiety being central to the establishment of the fetish. The dangers and attractions of an oedipal resolution are outlined in the case of 'Stanley', an older adolescent whose nappy wearing, transvestism and obsession with pregnant mothers and their babies brought him to therapy. The paper demonstrates some of the technical difficulties in such work, the slow ego-structuring that is necessary, the patient's swift perception of danger at any failure of attunement by the therapist and subsequent flight to the perverse defence, and the impetus that acceptance of oedipal gain may bring to development. Die wesentliche theoretische Position bezüglich Fetischismus bleibt die von Freud umrissene, dass Ichspaltung und Kastrationsangst bei der Etablierung des Fetischs zentral sind. Es werden die Gefahren und Anziehungspunkte einer ödipalen Lösung im Fall von 'Stanley' dargestellt, einem älteren Jugendlichen, den sein Windeltragen, Transvestismus und Besessenheit mit schwangeren Müttern und ihren Babies zu Therapie brachte. Der Artikel zeigt einige der technischen Schwierigkeiten in solch einer Arbeit, das langsame Ich-strukturieren, das notwendig ist, die schnelle Gefahrenwahrnehmung des Patientens bei jeglicher Missanpassung des Therapeutens und die darauffolgende Flucht in perverse Abwehr, und den Antrieb, den das Akzeptieren des ödipalen Gewinns zur Entwicklung bringen kann, auf. Des conceptions théoriques du fétichisme, la plus connue reste encore celle proposée par Freud, dans laquelle le clivage du moi et l'angoisse de castration sont à l'origine de la mise en place de l'objet fétiche. The author describes the historical pathway trailed by a psychoanalytical institution (Círculo Psicanalítico de Minas Gerais) in a developing country (Brazil) and the structural consequences to this institution. As this institution was founded according to Igor Caruso's non-orthodox proposals, it has been destined to be a pluralistic society, composed of members who follow multiple theoretical orientations. As all of these members are united in the same institution, they all have the same hierarchical rights. Hamblin held that the conception of 'fallacy' as an argument that seems valid but is not really so was the dominant conception of fallacy in the history of fallacy studies. The present paper explores the extent of support that there is for this view. After presenting a brief analysis of 'the standard definition of fallacy,' a number of the definitions of 'fallacy' in texts from the middle of this century – from the standard treatment – are considered. This is followed by a review of the definitions of 'fallacy' in the earlier history of logic books, including those of Aristotle, Whately, Mill and De Morgan. The essay concludes that there is scarcely any support for Hamblin's view that this particular definition of 'fallacy' was widely held.  相似文献

Is Laozi a syncretic text whose primary body of ideas were cobbled together from multiple and various sources,none of which can reasonably be identified as Daoist,or is it a synthetic text whose ideas emerged from a single source that for all intents embodies the core elements of a tradition that meets the standards of inclusion for a tradition of early Daoism? The present work examines the key points of Hongkyung Kim's sophisticated account of Laozi's origins as a syncretic text.It then goes on to present the key points of what would have to be involved in its original circulations as a synthetic text.It concludes by suggesting a middle ground that is able to explain why an originally synthetic Laozi is all too easily read by modern scholars as a syncretic text.  相似文献

The author discusses two concepts of transference: the broader use of transference as the 'total situation', as it was called by Melanie Klein and further elaborated by post-Kleinians, and the narrow use of transference in the traditional sense. Using clinical material from the four-times-a-week analysis of a severely disturbed adolescent over a period of 4 years, the author tries to show how the understanding of the transference as the total situation enabled her to work with this boy who hardly spoke or played. The observation of his non-verbal communication and the counter-transference feelings of the analyst made it possible to formulate hypotheses about the quality of his relationship with the analyst and the inner world of the patient. After the presentation of the clinical material the author points out some misunderstandings of the concept of the total situation in European psychoanalytic discussion.

L'auteur explore deux façons de conceptualiser le transfert?:?celle, plus large, de la « situation totale », formulée par Melanie Klein et développée par les post-Kleiniens, ainsi que celle, plus étroite, de l'acception traditionnelle du terme. À partir du matériel clinique d'une analyse À quatre séances hebdomadaires pendant plus de quatre ans d'un adolescent gravement perturbé, l'auteur s'efforce de montrer comment la conception du transfert en tant que situation totale lui a permis de travailler avec ce garçon qui ne parlait ni ne jouait guère. L'observation de ses communications non verbales et les éprouvés contre-transférentiels de l'analyste ont permis l'élaboration d'hypothèses relatives À la qualité de la relation patient-analyste et au monde interne du garçon. Après avoir présenté le matériel clinique, l'auteur relève quelques malentendus qui persistent, parmi les psychanalystes en Europe, au sujet de la situation totale.

L'autrice discute due concetti di transfert: il piu' ampio uso del transfert in quanto 'situazione totale', come fu chiamato da Melanie Klein e successivamente elaborato dai post-Kleiniani, e l'uso piu' ristretto del transfert nel senso tradizionale. Usando il materiale clinico tratto dall'analisi di quattro anni a quattro sedute settimanali di un adolescente molto disturbato, l'autrice cerca di mostrare in che modo la comprensione del transfert come situazione totale le ha permesso di lavorare con questo ragazzo che a mala pena parlava e giocava. L'osservazione delle sue comunicazioni non verbali e i sentimenti di contro-transfert dell'analista hanno permesso di formulare ipotesi sulla qualita' della sua relazione con l'analista ed il mondo interno del paziente. Successivamente alla presentazione del materiale clinico l'autrice espone alcuni dei fraintendimenti del concetto di situazione totale nella discussione psicoanalitica europea.

Die Autorin diskutiert zwei Konzepte der Übertragung: den weitergefassten Gebrauch der Übertragung als der 'totalen Situation', wie sie von Melanie Klein benannt und von Post-Kleinianern weiterentwickelt wurde, und den engeren Gebrauch der Übertragung im traditionellen Sinne. Anhand von klinischem Material aus einer vierstÜndigen Analyse eines schwer gestörten Jugendlichen Über den Zeitraum von 4 Jahren, versucht die Autorin aufzuzeigen, wie das Verständnis der Übertragung als der totalen Situation ihr ermöglichte, mit diesem Jungen zu arbeiten, der kaum sprach oder spielte. Die Beobachtung seiner nicht-sprachlichen Kommunikation und der GegenÜbertragungsgefÜhle der Analytikerin ermöglichte es, Hypothesen Über die Qualität seiner Beziehung mit der Analytikerin und der innerer Welt des Patientens zu formulieren. Nach der Präsentierung des klinischen Materials stellt die Autorin einige der Missverständnisse des Konzepts der totalen Situation in der europäischen psychoanalytischen Diskussion heraus.  相似文献

Recently criticism and theory have maintained that Kant's aesthetic theory is central to modernism, and have used Foucault's archaeology to interrogate that modernism. This paper suggests that archaeology ultimately cannot escape Kant's hold because it depends on Kantian theses. The first section will consider how a recent exponent of an 'archaeological' viewpoint characterizes Kant's theory and will set out the critical role Kant ascribes to art. The second section compares Kant and Foucault to argue that despite appearances their projects turn out to be substantially coterminal. My interest in comparing these critics is not only to be provocative but also to show that post-modernist thinking, at least in the guise of Foucault, needs and uses standards that Kant proposes.  相似文献
