Ethical Challenges Inherent in the Evaluation of an American Indian/Alaskan Native Circles of Care Project

This article provides first‐person accounts of ethical issues inherent in an evaluation of the Native American Indian Center of Central Ohio (NAICCO) Circles of Care project. Circles of Care is a three‐year, infrastructure development program funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) which is part of the federal Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The grant program is for American Indian and Alaskan Native (AI/AN) tribes and urban Indian communities and includes a strong emphasis on community engagement and community ownership. The Native American Indian Center of Central Ohio received a Circles of Care grant in the fifth cohort of the program. The first author (Project Evaluator) presents views that typically represent a western approach to evaluation, while the second author (Project Director) presents a Native perspective. Ethical issues are defined as well as the authors’ efforts to address these concerns.     

Community Data Collection with Children of Mothers Living with HIV: Boundaries of the Researcher Role

The TRACK‐II program is a multi‐site, community‐based randomized controlled trial evaluating an intervention to assist mothers living with HIV (MLH) in disclosing their HIV status to their young children. Many participants—both mothers and children—reported significant depression and/or suicidal ideation, a phenomenon that presented ethical challenges. This article focuses on participants at one site (Atlanta). Through the vignette of “Jordan,” we describe ethical challenges that may arise when faced with the responsibility of maximizing participants’ safety while maintaining the boundaries of the researcher role. Guided by community psychology values, our team has taken measures within our role as researchers to empower and protect children and mothers endorsing suicidal ideation. For example, we have relied on relationships with community‐based organizations and AIDS service organizations to connect HIV‐affected families to mental health services. Furthermore, we have expanded our system of documentation to follow‐up adequately with families at risk, and we track family resources to promote a strengths‐based framework. We have solicited families’ feedback about their supports and needs to understand how we may best serve them by connecting them to the resources they report needing most and empowering them to care for themselves.     

Attitudes Toward Dating Violence: How Does Sexual Identity Influence Perceptions Among College Students?

In the current study, we explore how sexual identity affects attitudes toward dating violence by utilizing a survey of 1,645 college students. We examine attitudes toward justification for relationship violence and perceptions of unhealthy relationships. It is important to explore how sexual identity influences perceptions of intimate partner violence because recent research suggests that rates of IPV among LGBT individuals are equal to or higher than IPV rates among heterosexuals (Walters, Chen, & Breiding, 2013). Additionally, non-heterosexual individuals often face different difficulties than their heterosexual counterparts when they attempt to report IPV and seek help. Considering prior research has often failed to examine how these differences influence attitudes toward relationship violence, the current study attempts to fill this void in the literature. Findings from the current study indicate that gender, more than sexuality, appears to be influencing attitudes towards IPV. Implications for future research are discussed.     

On the existential core of professionalism in mental health care

ABSTRACT

Existential issues are at the heart of professional role fulfilment. To defend this thesis, it will first be shown that professional competence not only consists of knowledge and skills, but also includes a second-order capacity which enables the clinician to dose and guide his activities. Secondly, in the way the professional performs his or her role, there is also always something communicated about how the professional relates to his or her role performance. This “indirect” communication is not an undesirable by-product of the communication with the patient, it is intrinsic to the professional role. Thirdly, the shaping of this “self-relatedness” can be conceptualised as the result of an interaction between basic (existential) motives in the professional and the normative appeal of the therapeutic setting. A conceptual model of the professional - patient relationship will be presented that clarifies the different dimensions and relations which are addressed in the three successive steps.     

Visual load and variability of muscle activation: Effects on reactive driving of older adults

BackgroundThe functional significance of the increase in motor output variability with increased visual information processing in older adults remains unclear. Here, we test the hypothesis that increased visual information processing increases muscle activation variability in older adults and impairs their ability to react as fast and as precisely as young adults during a simulated reactive driving task.MethodsFourteen young and sixteen older adults performed a reactive driving simulation task that required responding to unexpected brake lights of the car ahead during a simple reaction time task (low visual information processing condition) and a choice reaction time task with “no go” trials condition (high visual information processing condition). We quantified the following: 1) reactive driving performance – combination of premotor response time, motor response time, and brake force error; 2) motor output variability – brake impulse variability; 3) muscle activation variability – variability in the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle activity.ResultsThe increase in information processing exacerbated the impaired reactive driving performance in older adults. The best predictor of this impairment was the increase in brake force error. The impaired reactive driving performance was related to brake impulse variability and variability in the TA activity.ConclusionsThis study provides novel evidence that increased information processing increases muscle activation variability in older adults with detrimental consequences to their ability to perform a simulated reactive driving task.     

Affection and Abuse: Technology Use in Adolescent Romantic Relationships

Communication technologies benefit romantic relationships in terms of connection, but can also bring potential harm. Positive relational outcomes of adolescent technology use (i.e., increased emotional connection) have been examined separately from negative outcomes (i.e., unwanted monitoring of whereabouts) in previous research. However, the current study utilized hierarchical multiple regression to explore whether variance in both positive and negative relational outcomes could be explained by time spent online. Results suggest that time spent online predicts both positive relationship quality and cyber dating abuse after controlling age and gender. Implications include a greater understanding of the intersection between technology and adolescent relationships.     

Learning engagement as a target for interventions: a qualitative study of first-generation migrant adolescents in Finnish secondary education

Engagement is considered key in measuring student development, offering valuable clues into the adaptation, motivation and participation of students. This article sheds light on the multifaceted construct of engagement and its implications for first-generation migrant adolescents. Participant interviews and observations were conducted to investigate student experiences of engagement and the utility of engagement in intervention designs. Identified determinants of engagement consist of cultural capital, school norms and values, teacher-student relationships and relevance of support services. The results show that engagement goes beyond individual dispositions and achievement and includes learning environments and resources. Keeping in mind the vulnerable position of migrants and the need to ensure equal educational opportunity, a reshaping of engagement-related support services, interventions and school practices is needed.     

Reassessing the Concept and Measurement of Evangelicals: The Case for the RELTRAD Approach

Social scientists have generally adopted one of three analytical approaches to understanding evangelicalism and those who thereby fall within the ranks of evangelicals. The choice of which approach one adopts is not “neutral,” as each approach embodies different theoretical perspectives related to evangelicals, posits different means by which religion is linked to attitudes and behavior, entails different measurement issues, and captures somewhat different segments of society as being evangelical. This article delineates and explicates the inherent conceptual differences among the three approaches and examines the measurement issues associated with each approach. Given this reassessment, the article concludes by contending that the relative merits of the affiliation (or RELTRAD) approach generally outweigh those of the other two approaches.     

Investigating ethical issues in engineering design

This paper aims at contributing to a research agenda in engineering ethics by exploring the ethical aspects of engineering design processes. A number of ethically relevant topics with respect to design processes are identified. These topics could be a subject for further research in the field of engineering ethics. In addition, it is argued that the way design processes are now organised and should be organised from a normative point of view is an important topic for research. An earlier version of this paper was presented at the International Symposium on Technology and Society 2000, Rome, 8 September 2000.
