As a result of in-house discussions stimulated by previous Gonzaga engineering ethics conferences, Coffman Engineers began
the implementation of what is to be a company-wide ethics training program. While preparing a curriculum aimed at consulting
engineers, we found very little guidance as to how to proceed with most available literature being oriented towards the academic
environment. We consulted a number of resources that address the teaching of engineering ethics in higher education, but questioned
their applicability for the Consulting Engineering environment. This lack of guidance led us to informal research into the
ethical knowledge and attitudes of both consulting engineers and engineering students. Some of our findings were unexpected,
and suggest that a simpler approach to teaching ethics to working professionals might be preferred to that typically promoted
in higher education.

The author, a member of the U.S.President's Council on Bioethics, discussesethical issues raised by human cloning, whetherfor purposes of bringing babies to birth or forresearch purposes. He first argues that everycloned human embryo is a new, distinct, andenduring organism, belonging to the speciesHomo sapiens, and directing its owndevelopment toward maturity. He then distinguishesbetween two types of capacities belonging toindividual organisms belonging to this species,an immediately exerciseable capacity and abasic natural capacity that develops over time. He argues that it is the second type ofcapacity that is the ground for full moralrespect, and that this capacity (and itsconcomitant degree of respect) belongs tocloned human embryos no less than to adulthuman beings. He then considers and rejectscounter-arguments to his position, includingthe suggestion that the capacity of embryos isequivalent to the capacity of somatic cells,that full human rights are afforded only tohuman organisms with functioning brains, thatthe possibility of twinning diminishes themoral status of embryos, that the fact thatpeople do not typically mourn the loss of earlyembryos implies that they have a diminishedmoral status, that the fact that earlyspontaneous abortions occur frequentlydiminishes the moral status of embryos, andthat his arguments depend upon a concept ofensoulment. Nancey Murphy has been influential in the religion-and-science field through her espousal of the work of Imre Lakatos, more recently developed into a three-tier approach to the joint epistemology of scientific and religious thought incorporating also the ideas of Hempel and MacIntyre. She has proposed a substantial influence of the radical reformed tradition on science and has demonstrated the nature of social influences on the form of Darwinism. She has developed important links between ethics and the science-theology debate and has examined in depth ideas associated with hierarchical structuring, supervenience, and the nature of the soul. This study explored the hypothesis that authoritarianism is negatively associated with peace supportiveness. A sample of 197 Jewish/Israeli university students responded to a questionnaire that included items on attitudes toward the Middle East peace process as well as a personality measure. The results confirmed the hypothesis: Individuals who were less supportive of the peace process were more authoritarian conformists than were supporters of the process. A significant association between religiosity and attitudes toward the peace process was also found; the split between peace supporters and non-supporters corresponded roughly, though not exactly, to the split between religious and non-religious. The pro-peace individual is generally non-religious, less authoritarian conformist, and less aggressive. Hence, the social cognitions studied—beliefs about the peace process—may be group beliefs. Certain characteristics of the groups in question, such as socialization practices and social structure, may account for the personality features that covaried with the beliefs. The data showing that peace attitudes, religiosity, and certain personality traits form one entity might thus be marshalled in discussing the identity issue and applied to other scenes in contemporary conflicts. 相似文献

The implications of psychosocial generativity (Erikson, 1950) for understanding contemporary politics were explored. Study 1 replicated, in two samples, previous findings that generativity concerns are related to a variety of political activities, including the expenditure of time and money in support of political organizations. Using path analyses, Study 2 extended these findings and demonstrated how midlife generativity concerns interacted with political orientation and interest in politics to produce stronger relationships with giving. These findings suggest that people view the political arena as one important way to improve society and thereby manifest cultural generativity. Although focusing on the domain of politics, these studies highlight the complexity of generativity as a construct; broad concerns with generativity operate within the context of ideological commitments to produce greater levels of generative activity. 相似文献

The relation between political life events and distress was examined with particular emphasis on coping strategies and locus of control as two possible mediators. Subjects were 88 Israeli children. Results partially supported a linear relation between reported impact of exposure and distress. Findings for coping strategies as a mediator suggested, counterintuitively, that greater use of coping strategies is related to more experienced distress. Findings for locus of control as a mediator suggested that subjects with external locus of control experience greater distress, other than in the case of depressive symptomatology. These results indicate that coping strategies and locus of control play a complex role in the stress-outcome relation, the precise nature of which remains to be resolved. Theoretical, clinical and political implications of the findings are discussed. 相似文献

This paper begins by examining the claim that the practice of medicine is essentially a moral endeavor. According to this
view, all clinical practice has moral content, and each clinical situation has a moral dimension. I suggest that in order
to recognize this moral dimension, clinicians must engage in an interpretive process, and that they must be able to interpret
clinical data in ethical terms. However, clinicians often lack the ‘moral perception’ required to appreciate this moral dimension.
I will argue that physicians lack moral perception when the clinical data they are given do not offer sufficient opportunity
for interpretation. This paper draws on the work of Merleau-Ponty to suggest that this loss of interpretation is, paradoxically,
the result of the way that patients experience illness. This thesis may be productive, first, because it suggests opportunities
to explore the process of moral perception. This thesis also suggests ways for ethicists and educators to enhance clinicians'
perception of the ethical dimensions of clinical practice. Finally, the concept of moral perception, when grounded in the
patient's experience of illness, creates a fruitful area of inquiry that warrants inclusion in what may someday be the philosophy
of medicine's canon.

A survey was conducted of a subset of the physics community in order to gain insight into attitudes towards integrating ethics
into the physics curriculum. The results indicated significant support among some groups for such an integration yet also
revealed significant barriers to this process. Respondents were also asked to suggest topics which should be covered under
the heading of ethical issues in physics. The great variety of results indicates both that there are many issues worth investigating
and that many in the physics community have given a great deal of thought to these issues. 相似文献
