A feature is central to a concept to the extent that other features depend on it. Four studies tested the hypothesis that people will project a feature from a base concept to a target concept to the extent that they believe the feature is central to the two concepts. This centrality hypothesis implies that feature projection is guided by a principle that aims to maximize the structural commonality between base and target concepts. Participants were told that a category has two or three novel features. One feature was the most central in that more properties depended on it. The extent to which the target shared the feature’s dependencies was manipulated by varying the similarity of category pairs. Participants’ ratings of the likelihood that each feature would hold in the target category support the centrality hypothesis with both natural kind and artifact categories and with both well-specified and vague dependency structures.  相似文献

This research supports the value of psychology for the study of abduction, and the value of abduction for better understanding psychological meaning-making. More specifically, we argue that the logical structure of abduction is supported by psychological processes, namely, surprise, the psychological normalization of that surprise by a proposed explanatory hypothesis, and the projection of that hypothesis as a normalizing, interpretive lens onto related subsequent experiences. We examine how abduction can be better understood by taking into consideration what Peirce called belief, an understanding of belief that in effect reflects the psychological aspects of abduction. We also examine how abduction helps identify a line of reasoning that people follow with or without their explicit knowledge. The empirical study involves a series of semi-structured interviews focusing on the genesis of perceived loneliness and solitude as normalizing habits of positive expectation from the situation of being alone.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a Vector Semiotic Model as a possible solution to the symbol grounding problem in the context of Visual Question Answering. The Vector Semiotic Model combines the advantages of a Semiotic Approach implemented in the Sign-Based World Model and Vector Symbolic Architectures. The Sign-Based World Model represents information about a scene depicted on an input image in a structured way and grounds abstract objects in an agent’s sensory input. We use the Vector Symbolic Architecture to represent the elements of the Sign-Based World Model on a computational level. Properties of a high-dimensional space and operations defined for high-dimensional vectors allow encoding the whole scene into a high-dimensional vector with the preservation of the structure. That leads to the ability to apply explainable reasoning to answer an input question. We conducted experiments are on a CLEVR dataset and show results comparable to the state of the art. The proposed combination of approaches, first, leads to the possible solution of the symbol-grounding problem and, second, allows expanding current results to other intelligent tasks (collaborative robotics, embodied intellectual assistance, etc.).  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper, we apply Vuong’s general approach of model selection to the comparison of nested and non-nested unidimensional and multidimensional item response theory (IRT) models. Vuong’s approach of model selection is useful because it allows for formal statistical tests of both nested and non-nested models. However, only the test of non-nested models has been applied in the context of IRT models to date. After summarizing the statistical theory underlying the tests, we investigate the performance of all three distinct Vuong tests in the context of IRT models using simulation studies and real data. In the non-nested case we observed that the tests can reliably distinguish between the graded response model and the generalized partial credit model. In the nested case, we observed that the tests typically perform as well as or sometimes better than the traditional likelihood ratio test. Based on these results, we argue that Vuong’s approach provides a useful set of tools for researchers and practitioners to effectively compare competing nested and non-nested IRT models.  相似文献
