We conducted reinforcer assessments for 3 boys with a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who alternately received either placebo or previously prescribed methylphenidate. Our purpose was to evaluate whether methylphenidate altered the relative reinforcing effectiveness of various stimuli that are often used in classroom-based behavioral treatment programs (e.g., activities, tangible items). Results showed clear differences for some stimuli between reinforcer assessments conducted when participants had received methylphenidate compared to placebo. Results suggest that methylphenidate might act as an establishing operation for some common classroom reinforcers. Implications for the development and evaluation of behavioral treatments are discussed.  相似文献

This study sought to provide information on the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) of Mattick and Clarke (1989) with respect to factor structure, relations with psychopathology, and sex differences. A sample of 200 university students completed the SPS and SIAS and various measures of anxiety symptoms and depression. The results from the factor analyses for the sample as a whole suggest the presence of three factors corresponding to scrutiny fears, social interaction anxiety, and a general level of discomfort in social interactions. The results for men replicated this structure. For women, the three-factor solution demonstrated a blurring between the types of anxiety-provoking situations, and a general discomfort in situations involving differences in social power. In general, the discomfort factor was not correlated with measures of pathology, raising the possibility that uneasiness in these situations represents a process that is not part of social anxiety. The distinction between scrutiny fears and social interaction anxiety was also supported by the pattern of partial correlations that suggests that the presence of scrutiny fears is a stronger predictor of psychopathology than is social interaction anxiety, especially for men.  相似文献

One method that has been demonstrated to improve the effectiveness of reinforcement is stimulus (reinforcer) variation (Egel, 1980). Egel found that bar pressing increased and responding occurred more rapidly during varied reinforcement than during constant reinforcement when identical stimuli were used across phases for 10 individuals with autism. The purpose of the current investigation was to assess the preferences of 7 individuals for varied presentation of slightly lower quality stimuli relative to constant access to the highest quality stimulus. Varied presentation was preferred over constant reinforcer presentation with 4 participants, and the opposite was true for 2 participants. One participant did not demonstrate a preference. These results suggest that stimulus variation may allow less preferred reinforcers to compete effectively with a more highly preferred reinforcer for some individuals.  相似文献

This study investigated the extent to which observed frequencies of covarying responses could be utilized in the prediction of classroom behavior. Five behavior categories were observed daily over a 12-week period in the regular classroom settings of four fifth-grade and two fourth-grade male students. For each subject, stepwise regression analyses were conducted to determine which behaviors accounted for the largest proportions of variance in a single response category. The proportions of variance explained in the behavior categories of the subjects ranged from 8.9 to 75.4%. Further, response categories serving as predictor variables, as well as the number of predictor variables entered into the equations, differed across subjects. These results are discussed in terms of their implications for behavioral assessment and treatment application.  相似文献

Evidence is reviewed indicating that the extent of alcohol abuse alone cannot account for the neuropsychological deficits observed in alcoholics, and that alcohol abuse and head injury may interact in some patients to influence neuropsychological status. Alcohol abuse both increases the risk for head trauma and potentiates the resulting brain injury, which can lead to negative neuropsychological consequences. Clinicians involved in the treatment of addiction should assess patients for history of head injury, and neuropsychological deficits consequent to both head injury and ethanol. These deficits may limit patient ability to comply with addiction rehabilitation programs. Conversely, clinicians in acute care and rehabilitation of the sequelae of head trauma should routinely assess their patients for substance abuse, because such abuse can have a significant impact on recovery from brain injury.  相似文献

A self-report scale for the measurement of fear of fear, the Agoraphobic Cognitions Scale (ACS), was psychometrically evaluated. Two samples of inpatients satisfying DSM-III-R criteria for unipolar depressive and/or anxiety disorder were studied. Intercorrelational and factor analyses indicated that the ACS measured three dimensions of fear of fear: fear of bodily incapacitation, fear of losing control, and fear of acting embarrassingly. Three subscales were constructed to measure these dimensions. The subscales proved to have satisfactory internal consistency and criterion-related validity. However, fear of losing control was related not only to other anxiety symptoms, but also to depressive symptomatology. Agoraphobic patients reported more fear of bodily incapacitation and fear of losing control than social phobic, generally anxious, and nonanxious depressed patients. Fear of embarrassing action was higher among agoraphobic and social phobic patients than among generally anxious and nonanxious depressed patients. These results were obtained after controlling for general anxiety and depression level and, thus, support the validity of the fear of fear construct.  相似文献

Mental health professionals are increasingly beingcalled upon by the courts to offer their expertise inchild custody and access disputes. This paperaddresses the specialized role mental healthprofessionals have in custody and access hearings,particularly in cases wherein one or both parents havereceived a mental diagnosis (i.e., of mental disorderor mental retardation). The focus upon thispopulation of parents is warranted, as there is adearth of both empirical literature and professionalguidelines to provide direction to the mental healthprofessional that is offering his or her expertise tothe court regarding these parents. Additionally,there are specific issues that the mental healthprofessional needs to remain cognizant of, above andbeyond general issues associated with conductingcustody and access assessments, when conductingassessments on parents with mental diagnoses. Theliterature on the parenting behaviors and risk ofchild abuse and neglect associated with mentallydisordered and mentally retarded parents is reviewed,and the limitations in our empirical knowledge ofthese areas are highlighted. Neuropsychology is a behavioral approach to studying the brain, and an integration of neuropsychology with on-line processing measures of brain function is important for advancing the understanding of brain–behavior relationships. Cognitive event-related potentials (ERPs) are on-line processing measures that are of interest to neuropsychologists because they are linked to familiar neuropsychological test paradigms and because they have reached a degree of standardization sufficient to make them applicable in individual assessment. A selective review of cognitive ERPs is given, focusing on studies of attention in the oddball paradigm and arguing that an adequate assessment of attention is basic in understanding higher order cognitive functions. General principles for using ERP data to supplement and clarify neuropsychological analysis are discussed, and available evidence on dementia and traumatic head injury is reviewed. It is concluded that ERPs are a useful supplement to neuropsychological assessment. Although diagnostic use of ERPs must be guarded because of limited standardization and validation, information-processing analysis with ERPs may aid significantly in interpretation of behavioral data.  相似文献

Parents and teachers rated the strengths of a group of 20 children diagnosed as having serious emotional disturbance. The degree of consistency between different informants' reports was examined to determine whether certain items and scales on the Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale (BERS) were more appropriately answered by different sources or in different situations, and whether there were method effects associated with each group. A repeated measures ANOVA and correlations between the informants on each subscale demonstrated significant convergent and discriminant validity as well as possible assessment biases. Results also supported the need for developing separate norms for different informants.  相似文献
