Lever pressing of squirrel monkeys postponed brief electric shock according to a free-operant shock-postponement procedure. Pressing also produced shock with a probability proportional to the duration of the current interresponse time in some conditions, or to the fifth ordinally-preceding interresponse time in others. These conditions provided equal frequencies and temporal distributions of response-produced shocks either contingent on or independent of the current interresponse-time duration, respectively. Shock delivered contingent on the current interresponse-time duration resulted in shorter mean interresponse times and higher overall response rates that shock delivered independent of the current interresponse time. In subsequent conditions, response-produced shocks were sufficient to maintain responding following suspension of the postponement procedure only when those shocks were contingent on the current interresponse time. Presenting shock independent of the current interresponse time, conversely, suppressed response rate and ultimately led to cessation of responding in the absence of a conjoint shock-postponement procedure. These results demonstrate interresponse-time punishment in the absence of any indirect avoidance contingencies based on overall shock-frequency reduction, and strongly support similar interpretation at the more local level of shock-frequency reduction correlated with particular interresponse times. Differential punishment of long interresponse times also provides both an a priori basis for predicting whether a schedule of shock presentation will maintain or suppress responding and a framework for interpreting many of the functional relations between overall response rate and parameters of consequent shock presentation. Finally, these results and others indicate the importance of response-consequence contiguity above and beyong any notion of noncontiguous contingency in the control of behavior. 相似文献

The ability of four tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) to recognize the causal connection between seeing and knowing was investigated. The subjects were trained to follow a suggestion
about the location of hidden food provided by a trainer who knew where the food was (the knower) in preference to a trainer
who did not (the guesser). The experimenter baited one of three opaque containers behind a cardboard screen so that the subjects
could not see which of the containers hid the reward. In experiment 1, the knower appeared first in front of the apparatus
and looked into each container; next, the guesser appeared but did not look into any containers. Then the knower touched the
correct cup while the guesser touched one of the three randomly. The capuchin monkeys gradually learned to reach toward the
cup that the knower suggested. In experiment 2, the subjects adapted to a novel variant of the task, in which the guesser
touched but did not look into any of the containers. In experiment 3, the monkeys adapted again when the knower and the guesser
appeared in a random order. These results suggest that capuchin monkeys can learn to recognize the relationship between seeing
and knowing.

The present study asked whether capuchin monkeys recognize human attentional states. The monkeys requested food from the experimenter
by extending an arm (pointing) toward the baited one of two transparent cups. On regular trials the experimenter gave the
food immediately to the monkeys upon pointing but on randomly inserted test trials she ignored the pointing for 5 s during
which she displayed different attentional states. The monkeys looked at the experimenter's face longer when she looked at
the monkeys than when she looked at the ceiling in Experiment 1, and longer when she oriented her head midway between the
two cups with eyes open than when she did so with eyes closed in Experiment 2. However, the monkeys showed no differential
pointing in these conditions. These results suggest that capuchins are sensitive to eye direction but this sensitivity does
not lead to differential pointing trained in laboratory experiments. Furthermore, to our knowledge, this is the first firm
behavioral evidence that non-human primates attend to the subtle states of eyes in a food requesting task. 相似文献

Conservation of quantity occurs through recognition that changes in the physical arrangement of a set of items do not change the quantity of items in that set. Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were presented with a computerized quantity judgment task. Monkeys were rewarded for selecting the greater quantity of items in one of two horizontal arrays of items on the screen. On some trials, after a correct selection, no reward was given but one of the arrays was manipulated. In some cases, this manipulation involved moving items closer together or farther apart to change the physical arrangement of the array without changing the quantity of items in the array. In other cases, additional items were added to the initially smaller array so that it became quantitatively larger. Monkeys then made another selection from the two rows of items. Monkeys were sensitive to these manipulations, changing their selections when the number of items in the rows changed but not when the arrangement only was changed. Therefore, monkeys responded on the basis of the quantity of items, and they were not distracted by non-quantitative manipulations of the sets.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at 相似文献

Many species in long-term captivity have tried to kill time by playing friendly games with their warders. In the end, only
rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) could tolerate the tedious hide-and-seek games that their human jailers prefer to play. In this article, written many years
before the Stockholm syndrome was first described, the author relates how it was eventually discovered which species is most
willing to contribute to the development of a genuinely scientific human psychology.

Many studies have used mirror-image stimulation in attempts to find self-recognition in monkeys. However, very few studies
have presented monkeys with video images of themselves; the present study is the first to do so with capuchin monkeys. Six
tufted capuchin monkeys were individually exposed to live face-on and side-on video images of themselves (experimental Phase
1). Both video screens initially elicited considerable interest. Two adult males looked preferentially at their face-on image,
whereas two adult females looked preferentially at their side-on image; the latter elicited lateral movements and head-cocking.
Only males showed communicative facial expressions, which were directed towards the face-on screen. In Phase 2 monkeys discriminated
between real-time, face-on images and identical images delayed by 1 s, with the adult females especially preferring real-time
images. In this phase both screens elicited facial expressions, shown by all monkeys. In Phase 3 there was no evidence of
discrimination between previously recorded video images of self and similar images of a familiar conspecific. Although they
showed no signs of explicit self-recognition, the monkeys’ behaviour strongly suggests recognition of the correspondence between
kinaesthetic information and external visual effects. In species such as humans and great apes, this type of self-awareness
feeds into a system that gives rise to explicit self-recognition. 相似文献

Note on delay-interval illumination effects on retention in monkeys (Cebus apella). 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0 下载免费PDF全文
Two monkeys experienced with delayed matching to sample were given a 30-day baseline training period during which the delay interval was illuminated. Both subjects showed an increase in matching accuracy when shifted to dark delay intervals, and accuracy declined when the illuminated delay interval was reinstituted. These results, as well as earlier reports of facilitation of delayed matching behavior by dark delay intervals, support the view that the absolute level of delay-interval illumination can importantly affect visual retention in monkeys and may be indicative of significant differences in the retention mechanisms employed by monkeys and birds. 相似文献

Six rhesus monkeys were trained to self-administer orally delivered phencyclidine (0.25 mg/mL) and saccharin (0.03% wt/vol) under concurrent fixed-ratio 16 schedules. In Condition 1 the fixed-ratio requirement for phencyclidine was changed from 16 to 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 and 16 while the fixed-ratio requirement for saccharin deliveries remained constant at 16. In Condition 2 the fixed-ratio value for saccharin was systematically altered while the fixed-ratio requirement for phencyclidine remained at 16, and in Condition 3 the fixed-ratio requirements for both phencyclidine and saccharin were altered simultaneously. Water was then substituted for saccharin, and the series of fixed-ratio manipulations was replicated. The phencyclidine concentration was reduced to 0.125 mg/mL and Conditions 1 and 3 were repeated. When the fixed-ratio requirement for phencyclidine was increased and the fixed-ratio requirement for saccharin or water remained fixed at 16, phencyclidine deliveries decreased when saccharin (vs. water) was concurrently available. The magnitude of the decrease ranged from 20% to 90% (of the concurrent water condition) as the fixed-ratio requirement for phencyclidine increased from 4 to 128. When the fixed-ratio requirement for phencyclidine remained at 16 and the fixed-ratio requirements for concurrent saccharin or water varied between 4 and 128, phencyclidine deliveries decreased by 30% to 40% due to the concurrent availability of saccharin (vs. water). This decrease occurred only at the three lowest fixed-ratio values when saccharin intake was relatively high. When the fixed-ratio requirements for both phencyclidine and concurrent saccharin or water were varied simultaneously, phencyclidine deliveries were reduced from 20% to 45% when saccharin (vs. water) was concurrently present. There was little effect of reducing the phencyclidine concentration when the data were analyzed in terms of unit price (responses per milligram). Thus, changes in the fixed-ratio requirement or drug concentration were functionally similar, and unit price of phencyclidine was the variable that was influenced by the presence of concurrent saccharin. These data indicate that drug-reinforced behavior is substantially reduced when the environment is enriched with an alternative nondrug reinforcer. The economic context in which these substances are presented is an important determinant of drug-reinforced behavior. 相似文献

Schedule-induced biting under fixed-interval schedules of food or electric-shock presentation 总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0 下载免费PDF全文

Squirrel monkeys pressed a lever under fixed-interval schedules of food or of electric-shock presentation. Both schedules induced repeated biting on a latex hose. Whether lever pressing was controlled by food or by electric shock, a pattern of decreasing hose biting and increasing lever pressing occurred within fixed-interval cycles. As the fixed-interval duration was increased from 6 to 600 sec, average rates of lever pressing decreased under both schedules. Average rates of hose biting first increased with increasing parameter value, reaching a maximum at values that varied from 60 to 337 sec in different monkeys, and then declined at higher values. d-Amphetamine at appropriate doses increased overall rates of lever pressing maintained by food or by shock, but either did not affect or decreased overall rates of hose biting. When no timeout period occurred between fixed-interval cycles, the monkeys bit most frequently immediately after food or electric shock was presented. When there was a timeout period, hose biting began shortly after the start of the fixed-interval cycles, with little or no hose biting immediately after food or electric shock was presented. Most hose biting appeared to be schedule-induced rather than food- or shock-induced. 相似文献

Differential effects of cocaine and pentobarbital on fixed-interval and random-interval performance 下载免费PDF全文
Reports have indicated that the behavioral effects of a drug can be related to the nondrug control rate of behavior in the absence of the drug. To investigate the purported relationship between control rate and drug rate, squirrel monkeys were trained under a fixed-interval 300-s schedule of stimulus-shock termination, a procedure that engendered a wide range of response rates. A light illuminated the experimental chamber during the fixed interval, and the first lever press after 300 s had elapsed terminated the light for 30 s and precluded an electrical stimulus to the tail. Following acute intramuscular administration of cocaine (0.03-0.56 mg/kg), overall rate increased and different control rates of responding, during different parts of the fixed interval, converged toward a common rate. Subsequently, the schedule was changed to a multiple fixed-interval 300-s random-interval 300-s schedule; performance during the random-interval component was characterized by steady responding at a uniformly high rate. Analysis of fixed-interval and random-interval performances following acute cocaine administration revealed convergence of response rates toward a common, uniform rate. Pentobarbital (0.3-10.0 mg/kg) only decreased overall rate, and different control rates of responding during the fixed interval did not converge toward a common rate. The results indicate that this type of analysis can be useful in comparing pharmacological agents from different classes and that the rate at which responding becomes uniform can provide a quantitative behavioral end point for characterizing drug effects on behavior. 相似文献
