‘Coloured’ Boys Talk: Constructing Heterosexual Masculinities in a Working Class High School Context

This article presents the results of a year-long ethnographic study of 13 ‘Coloured’, working class, high school boys aged 14–17 in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Data derived using participant observation and semi-structured in-depth interviews. Social constructionist perspectives were used as a basis for discourse analysis. An interrogation of participant accounts illustrated the contradictory and ambiguous nature of their heterosexual identities. The findings suggest the simultaneous performance of crude, misogynistic masculinities, and more loving and respectful attitudes towards women and girls. The alternate discursive positions show potential for more equitable gender relationships to be encouraged in historically disadvantaged teenage boys. 相似文献

ABSTRACTAutobiographical memory is widely posited to serve self, social and directive functions. Recent evidence suggests marked autobiographical memory impairments in Huntington's disease (HD), however, no study to date has determined how the perceived functions of autobiographical reminiscence may be altered in HD. The current study aimed to assess the self-reported frequency and function of autobiographical reminiscence in HD. We assessed autobiographical reminiscence in late premanifest (n?=?16) and early stage HD (n?=?14), relative to healthy controls (n?=?30). Participants completed the Thinking About Life Experiences Scale Revised (TALE-R), which measures three putative functions of autobiographical memory (self, social, directive). People with manifest HD reported talking less frequently about the past compared to controls. In contrast, no group differences were found in terms of thinking about the past. Manifest HD participants further reported using their autobiographical memories for social functions less frequently compared to controls. No other group differences were evident in terms of self or directive functions of autobiographical memory. These self-report findings complement recent reports of autobiographical memory disruption on performance-based tasks in HD. Future studies exploring how changes in autobiographical reminiscence impact a sense of self continuity in HD will be important in this regard. 相似文献

AbstractIn this paper, I argue for three main claims. First, that there are two broad sorts of error theory about a particular region of thought and talk, eliminativist error theories and non-eliminativist error theories. Second, that an error theory about rule following can only be an eliminativist view of rule following, and therefore an eliminativist view of meaning and content on a par with Paul Churchland’s prima facie implausible eliminativism about the propositional attitudes. Third, that despite some superficial appearances to the contrary, non-eliminativist error theory does not provide a plausible vehicle for understanding the ‘sceptical solution’ to the sceptical paradox about rule-following developed in Saul Kripke’s Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language. 相似文献

Therapeutic assessment of the child (TA-C) is a model of psychological assessment that allows for collaborative work with parents and child on their reasons for consultation, a collaboration that breaks away from a traditional double separation (parent/assessor, and assessor/therapist) in child assessment. This paper, grounded in a contemporary psychodynamic viewpoint, presents clinical illustrations to support a conceptualization of change processes in TA-C. It is argued that, in order to revitalize empathy in parents, work focusing on the parents’ mental representation of their child is central. We propose a hierarchy of assessment/therapeutic goals that allows for a better distinction between TA-C and standard assessment in work with children. 相似文献

The vision of inclusion speaks to the minds, hearts and spirits of children with disabilities. A meaningful inclusive atmosphere exists when children with and without disabilities are physically engaged and interact with one another as a community in a variety of activities. Spirituality for children with disabilities within an inclusive early childhood classroom requires an education that is intellectual, emotional, social, moral and spiritual. In this type of environment, children with disabilities and peers can flourish in a warm and welcoming community. This paper contributes to the literature and asserts the importance of the ‘forgotten’ dimension of early childhood special education. Learning strategies to inform teachers and parents for establishing an inclusive welcoming classroom for children with disabilities are offered by exploring a spiritual curriculum emphasising holistic education with peers through strengths-based projects, small group work and peer-mediated interventions for supporting the interests of each child and developing the capacity to develop resilience and joy. 相似文献

Older adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) may also have preclinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Differential diagnosis is quite challenging due to the overlapping symptoms of MDD and AD. In the current study, we predicted that impaired long-term memory (an area most affected in early AD), but not executive function (an area affected in MDD and AD), would distinguish older depressed patients who developed AD from those who did not. Patients (N = 120) assessed as having MDD but not dementia at baseline were administered tests of cognitive function and followed longitudinally for subsequent diagnosis of AD. Using structural equation modeling we found a latent construct of long-term memory to be associated with AD to a greater extent than executive functioning. Additional analyses to enhance clinical utility of findings indicated that individual tests of episodic memory were most predictive of AD status. Tests of long-term memory can be utilized by the clinician when assessing for preclinical AD among depressed elderly. 相似文献

This article investigates the links between personalization, workplace attachment and perceived workplace quality. Participants (N = 116) work in the same office building. This investigation focus also about the office ability to improve intimacy and appropriation by owners (open space, individual office, shared office). As we were expecting, we observe an effective link between personalization and workplace attachment, and perceived workplace quality. The overall results lead to the conclusion of a solid link between attachment and perceived workplace quality. We will discuss our conclusions furthermore and we will offer recommendations. 相似文献

Information dissemination is a term used to describe the distribution or broadcasting of information (IGI Global). Using the case-study method, this article has investigates various information dissemination strategies used by Da’wah Academy for Da’wah purposes. The study concluded that Da’wah Academy is using both traditional and modern information dissemination strategies to convey the message of Islam within Pakistan and abroad. This report recommends that Da’wah Academy should begin publishing in electronic format to widen the use and sale of their publications. There is a need to focus on web-based information dissemination and to extend the use of social media to pull information among information seekers. It is recommended that the Academy initiate online distance learning courses along with traditional correspondence courses to cater needs of far-flung areas. 相似文献

Introduction and objectiveWe examined the effect of collective efficacy on the strategies adopted to cope with stress in occupational contexts (problem-focused coping), comparing it with that of self-efficacy and self-determination.Method and resultsWe studied two groups working in two different sectors of the foodservice industry, both characterized by high perceived stress but differing in their perceived interdependence (fastfood industry versus traditional restaurants). We showed that (1) collective efficacy is a more effective resource for dealing with stress than self-efficacy; (2) the relationship between self-efficacy and adaptive strategies is mediated by self-determination, but no such mediation is observed between collective efficacy and adaptive strategies, (3) these results are only observed in the presence of high levels of perceived interdependence (e.g., fastfood industry).ConclusionThe managerial implications for mobilizing collective resources to overcome occupational stress are discussed. 相似文献

IntroductionLittle is known about what adults perceive as core functions of playfulness in their daily life.ObjectiveTo compile a list of perceived functions of playfulness from nominations of laypeople and to test the association of the productions with individual levels of playfulness as a personality trait.MethodThree hundred and twenty-four adults aged 18 to 62 (M = 31.6, SD = 11.5) listed perceived functions of playfulness in five areas (leisure and work and when being with work colleagues, friends, and their partner) and completed a questionnaire for playfulness.ResultsThe entries were grouped into seven broader categories; namely, (1) well-being; (2) humor and laughter; (3) mastery orientation; (4) creativity; (5) relationships; (6) coping strategies; and (7) coping with situations. Women noted more functions than men (t(297) = 2.99, p < .01, d = 0.35) but there were no gender differences in the playfulness scale. Individual levels of playfulness correlated only for men with a greater number of functions, while it was uncorrelated in the sample of women.ConclusionPeople see a broad range of functions for playfulness in their daily lives. This warrants further investigation on potential benefits of adult playfulness. 相似文献
