The inheritance of Unitatis Redintegratio: critical questions for Anglicans

Anglican–Roman Catholic dialogues have failed to gain practical traction over the past 50 years, and relations between the two groups may well have gone backwards, despite the important opening provided by Unitatis Redintegratio. This article offers an overview of some of the demographic and political reasons for the failure of dialogical ‘reception’, as well as offering some alternative paths forward, based on elements within the decree itself, especially as underlined by Pope John Paul II.

As a complement to the many studies pointing to tensions, compromises and juxtapositions in Lumen Gentium (LG), this article, published on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of the dogmatic constitution, aims, by means of a lectio continua, to defend the document's profound coherence. In each chapter the Council fathers made it clear that – whether it pertains to the people of God as a whole or to the laity, the religious, the bishops, the Pope or even the Blessed Virgin Mary – nothing happens in the Church as a merely human act, apart from the will of Christ or the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The first image applied to the Church in LG 1 – that the Church shares in Christ's mission – and its explanation in LG 8 that the Church is ‘one complex reality comprising a human and a divine element’, therefore, can be considered as a perfect summary of the entire constitution and of the nature and mission of the Church.     

Toward Common Ground: Catholicism and Pentecostalism in African Christianity

After reviewing the great appeal of Pentecostal/charismatic spirituality as a religious phenomenon that has come to stay on the tapestry of the pastoral ecology of African Christianity, this article suggests a more dynamic and practical interface and collaboration with these movements by the Catholic Church in Africa, using the Vatican Council's embrace of ecumenism and dialogue.     

The crystal structure of Al20.6Ta22.4 and its relation to Frank–Kasper phases

The monoclinic phase in the Al–Ta system has been identified by means of X-ray single-crystal structure analysis as Al_{19+ x} Ta_{24? x} (x?=?1.6), Pearson symbol mP86. Al_20.58Ta_22.42 crystallizes in the space group P2₁/n, with a?=?987.86?pm, b?=?990.12?pm, c?=?1489.45?pm and β?=?99.958°. Twinned crystals of the title compound can be obtained by iodine-promoted reactions of the elements. In the experiments described here, the reactions took place in sealed tantalum ampoules at 1400°C. Single-phase samples were obtained by a metallurgical powder method, which minimizes aluminium loss by incongruent vapourization. The composition was found to span the range 0.51?≤?x _Ta?≤?0.53. Al_{19+ x} Ta_{24? x} decomposes in the solid state at 1450°C into Al₆₉Ta₃₉ and σ-AlTa₂. The crystal structure is analyzed in relation to tetrahedral close-packed structures. The kinship with Cr₃Si-type and H-type structures is accentuated.     

A Longitudinal Study of Factors Influencing Occupational Therapy Students' Practice Preference from Pre-Admission Through Job Selection

Abstract

The number of occupational therapists and students choosing to practice in the area of mental health continues to decline. A longitudinal comparative study was conducted using a class of 27 Bachelor's and 20 Master's students, to examine the factors that influence the students' practice area preference at three points from pre-admission to job selection. The major influential factors were similar for both groups. At pre-admission, observation, volunteer work or a job in OT or a related field was reported to be the most influential factor in choosing a practice area preference. At level II fieldwork, positive influences on practice area preference were generally higher for physical disabilities, and negative influences were higher for mental health. At job selection, availability of a job and patient population were the most important influencing factors. Pre-admission experiences, level II fieldwork, and professionally challenging aspects of the practice area preference were the most important retrospective experiences influencing preference for practice area. In order to maintain or increase a presence in mental health the profession may need to expand OT students' pre-admission experiential expectations, professional mental health supports, and job opportunities in mental health.     

The role of fluid and emotional intelligence in malingering

The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of fluid (gf), social (SI) and emotional intelligence (EI) in faking the Beck Depression Inventory (2nd ed., BDI‐II). Twenty‐two students and 26 non‐students completed Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM), a social insight test, the Schutte et al. self‐report EI scale, and the BDI‐II under honest and faking instructions. Results were consistent with a new model of successful faking, in which a participant's original response must be manipulated into a strategic response, which must match diagnostic criteria. As hypothesised, the BDI‐II could be faked, and gf was not related to faking ability. Counter to expectations, however, SI and EI were not related to faking ability. A second study explored why EI failed to facilitate faking. Forty‐nine students and 50 non‐students completed the EI measure, the Marlowe‐Crown Scale and the Levenson et al. Psychopathy Scale. As hypothesised, EI was negatively correlated with psychopathy, but EI showed no relationship with socially desirable responding. It was concluded that in the first experiment, high‐EI people did fake effectively, but high‐psychopathy people (who had low EI) were also faking effectively, resulting in a distribution that showed no advantage to high EI individuals.     

La detección de la mentira mediante la medida de la tensión en la voz: una revisión crítica

Los analizadores de la tensión vocal son dispositivos que supuestamente detectan la ausencia de ciertos microtemblores en la voz, lo) que sería indicativo de que el sujeto está experimentando tensión. Desde esta perspectiva se asume además que todo mentiroso está tenso, por loo que los analizadores de la tensión vocal se comercializan como detectores de mentiras. En este trabajo presentamos la historia de tales artilugios y la base teórica sobre la que pretenden apoyarse, para pasar a continuación a examinar la investigación empírica realizada para contestar a cuatro preguntas clave: (a) ¿existen características vocales que se alteran cuando el hablante experimenta tensión?, (b) ¿existen características vocales que se alteran cuando el hablante miente?, (c) ¿detectan la tensión los evaluadores del estrés vocal?, y (d) ¿detectan la mentira? La respuesta que la investigación ha dado a estas preguntas cuestiona seriamente el empleo de los analizadores de la tensión vocal como detectores de mentiras.     

To share or not to share: The place of personal disclosure in scholarly writing

The norms of scholarly discourse have traditionally excluded personal disclosures in conceptual articles, as if the subjective nature of such revelations would be inconsistent with the scientific/objective stature of these works. Based on the author's experience with a recent publication, based on recent studies of researcher projection and bias in case studies, and using a framework of organizational communication, it is suggested here that there is indeed a contribution such disclosures can make. It is not recommended that sharing on a personal level become a new norm, but rather that the choice to share be considered as viable in a scholarly context. Five specific benefits of such sharing are listed, including unearthing and revealing bias, demystifying the process of discovery, and avoiding the trap of defensive reasoning.
