ObjectivesBased on ecological systems theory [Bronfenbrenner, U. (2005). Making human beings human: Bioecological perspectives on human development. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage], the purpose of this study was to examine parents’ involvement in competitive youth sport settings.DesignData were collected through two distinct phases of fieldwork. Phase 1 involved longitudinal data collection with four families. Phase 2 involved observations of youth soccer settings.MethodData were collected from four families via individual interviews and audio-diaries and were supplemented through 120 h of observation. Data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using grounded theory methodology.ResultsParents’ verbal reactions to their children's sport performance behaviors were placed on a continuum moving from more supportive to more controlling comments. These comments were categorized as praise/encouragement, performance contingent feedback, instruction, striking a balance, negative comments, and derogatory comments. Parents experienced empathy in that they perceived sharing the emotions their children felt in sport, and these emotions appeared to change in relation to dynamic game and contextual circumstances. Parents also thought that they possessed knowledge and expertise of sport, which they perceived enabled them to make comments to their children.ConclusionA series of reciprocal and bi-directional relationships were central to parents’ involvement in competitive youth sport. 相似文献

Society provides messages about how people should ideally look and previous research has indicated these messages, both the actual messages provided and the perception of the message, influence body image. Research into male body image has shown males are concerned with having a lean and muscular body and as such, may want to decrease fat and increase their muscles. This paper explored the influence of a range of messages from parents, peers, and the media on a number of different measures of 362 adolescent boys’ body image and body change strategies. Specifically, messages about shape, food, exercise, losing weight and increasing muscles were explored in relation to satisfaction with weight and muscles, and the use of strategies to decrease weight and increase muscles. The findings indicated that parental messages were the strongest influence on body image and that parents, the media, and to a lesser extent messages from male friends were the strongest predictors of body change strategies. 相似文献

Using symbolic interaction, we developed a research model that proposed adolescent perceptions of parental support and psychological
control would be related to adolescent depressed mood directly and indirectly through self-esteem. We tested the model using
self-report questionnaire data from 161 adolescents living with both of their biological parents. To examine possible gender
of adolescent differences, we tested two multigroup models separately for adolescents’ perceptions of mothers’ and fathers’
parental behaviors. Both the fathers’ and mothers’ models yielded (a) direct paths from self-esteem to depressed mood (for
boys and girls), psychological control to depressed mood (for boys) and (b) an indirect path from support to self-esteem to
depressed mood (for girls and boys) and an indirect path from psychological control to self-esteem to depressed mood (for
girls). In addition, in the fathers’ model a significant direct path was found between fathers’ support and depressed mood

The commonalities between anxiety and depression have been discussed before, but few have delineated the potentially different
mechanisms through which treatments work for these populations. The current study conducted a comprehensive review of child
and adolescent randomized clinical trials that tested cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety or depression. All studies
were required to have assessed both treatment outcomes and at least one theory-specific process target, including behavioral,
physiological, cognitive, and coping variables. Using a meta-analytic approach, CBT demonstrated positive treatment gains
across anxiety, depression, and general functioning outcomes. CBT for anxiety also produced moderate to large effects across
behavioral, physiological, cognitive, and coping processes, with behavioral targets demonstrating potentially the greatest
change. CBT for depression produced small effects for cognitive processes but nonsignificant effects for behavioral and coping
variables. Findings were generally consistent with CB theory but suggest potentially different mediators in the treatment
of anxiety and depression. Results are discussed in terms of implications for mechanisms research, theories of change, and

Increasing evidence indicates that adolescent behavior problems are related to family functioning. In general, findings have
demonstrated the family’s critical role in facilitating developmental outcomes. This study evaluated a 6-week holistic program
for at-risk teens and their parents entitled Creating a Responsible Thinker at baseline, post-test, and 3-month follow-up.
Results demonstrated gender differences in the program’s effects on self-efficacy, specifically increased self-efficacy for
females and reduced self-efficacy among males. Follow-up results suggested that teens reported better communication with their
parents. These results underscore the appropriateness of a family-based approach to treatment for at-risk teens and their

This longitudinal study of 286, urban residing, first- and second-generation immigrant adolescents examined the degree to which acculturative stress is related to the developmental trajectories of mental health problems and the role of social support in this process. Participants were recruited when they entered 10th grade and two additional waves of data were gathered at 12-month intervals. Using individual growth curve modeling, the results show significant decline in internalizing mental health problems during the high school years. At the same time, greater exposure to acculturative stress predicted significantly more withdrawn/depressed, somatic, and anxious/depressed symptoms. Additionally, social support moderated the relation between acculturative stress and anxious/depressed symptoms. Given the voluntary nature of adolescent friendships, forgiveness of interpersonal transgressions has been identified as a critical aspect of maintaining these relationships. However, transgression forgiveness is related to a range of situational (e.g., transgression severity), interpersonal (e.g., friendship commitment), and intrapersonal (e.g., victim's empathy) factors. Data from 161 adolescents were used to examine the nature of the relationships between these factors and forgiveness and to examine the differential association patterns for adolescent boys and girls. Results for the overall adolescent sample indicated both situational and interpersonal factor associations with forgiveness (R 2 = .52, p < .001). Examination of separate female and male forgiveness reports indicated similar interpersonal factor associations and differential situational factor associations with female (R 2 = .46, p < .001), and male (R 2 = .60, p < .001) forgiveness. Findings suggest the likelihood of forgiving may be contextually dependent, and that researchers should consider transgression, relationship, and intrapersonal characteristics when examining forgiveness. Further, the present study suggests the contextual factors associated with forgiveness may be further differentiated by gender. 相似文献

中学生心理危机分类模型属于复杂数据模型,本文采用分类树算法探究家庭、校园、同伴和个体因素在中学生心理危机分类中的相对重要性差异,尤其是心理痛苦三因素对致死性危机的独特作用。结果显示:(1)中学生自杀危机和非致死性危机分类树的分类效果良好,自伤危机分类树的分类效果欠佳;(2)中学生自杀危机中,痛苦逃避最为重要,痛苦唤醒次之,之后为痛苦体验和学校满意度;(3)中学生自伤危机中,同伴问题行为最为重要,之后为父母陪伴和家庭监督;(4)中学生非致死性危机中,歧视知觉最为重要,之后为痛苦唤醒和同伴支持。提示中学生不同心理危机的促发机制存在差异,心理痛苦三因素模型在自杀分类模型中作用显著,但并非自伤危机和非致死性危机的关键变量。 相似文献

以860名小学、初中、高中学生为被试,从鼓励成就、鼓励独立、过度保护、接受性、拒绝、惩罚6个维度研究母亲教养方式与青少年合作意识、合作情感、合作策略、合作意图的关系。结果发现母亲教养方式与青少年合作的关系密切:(1)母亲的接受性越好,青少年合作意识越高。(2)在学习合作中,母亲的接受性越好,青少年的合作情感越高。(3)母亲的接受性预测青少年采用积极的合作策略;母亲的拒绝、过度保护,预测青少年采用消极的合作策略。4)母亲的惩罚和鼓励独立的教养方式与劳动合作中的利他意图有显著负相关,母亲接受性与青少年在劳动合作和课外合作中的利己意图有显著负相关。 相似文献
