Donald Davidson used triangulation to do everything from explicate psychological and semantic externalism, to attack relativism
and skepticism, to propose conditions necessary for thought and talk. At one point Davidson tried to bring order to these
remarks by identifying three kinds of triangulation, each operative in a different situation. Here I take seriously Davidson’s
talk of triangular situations and extend it. I start by describing Davidson’s situations. Next I establish the surprising
result that considerations from one situation entail the possibility that at any one time one language is partially untranslatable
into another. Because the possibility is time-indexed, it need not conflict with Davidson’s own argument against the possibility
of untranslatability. I derive the result, not to indict Davidson, but to propose a new kind of triangulation, the reconciliation
of untranslatability, which I investigate. Insofar as triangulation is central to Davidson’s views, getting a handle on his
various triangular situations is key to getting a handle on his contributions to philosophy. Insofar as those contributions
have enriched our understanding of how language, thought, and reality interrelate, extending Davidson’s model promises to
extend our understanding too.

Realism about the external world enjoys little philosophical support these days. I rectify this predicament by taking a relatively
pragmatist line of thought to defend commonsense realism; I support commonsense realism through an interpretation and application
of Donald Davidson’s notion of triangulation, the triangle composed of two communicators coordinating and correcting their
responses with a shared causal stimulus. This argument is important because it has a crucial advantage over the often used
abductive argument for realism. My argument avoids unwarranted conclusions, whereas the abductive argument is “inflationary”
because it reaches beyond the limits of evidence for its realist conclusion. To illustrate the problems of the abductive argument
and motivate my Davidsonian approach, I take a brief look at the abductive argument for realism in Frederick Will’s work.

Spiritual practices are increasingly accommodated by therapists working with religious couples. While research documents potential
benefits, spiritual practices such as prayer may invoke an interpretive couple-God relationship distorted by pathogenic processes
in one or both spouses. A survey administered to 78 religious couples examined the influence of power/gender as it relates
to couples’ harmful triangulation with Deity. Results suggest that harmful triangulation with Deity does occur to some degree
in couple relationships, that there are significant differences by gender, and that spouses’ tendencies to triangulate are
correlated with one another. We discuss these results from a systemic-feminist perspective, and offer some clinical applications
for working with religious couples.

Five patterns of service provider-caregiver-adolescent interaction are discussed using qualitative interviews and file review data from 44 youth with complex needs who were clients of more than one psychosocial service (child welfare, mental health, addictions, juvenile justice, and special education). Findings show that young people and their families become triangulated with service providers, either engaging with, or resisting, interventions. For young people with complex needs involved with multiple service providers, both positive and negative patterns of interaction contribute to the complexity of caregiver-child interactions. According to young people themselves, the most functional of these patterns, empowerment, was experienced as protective when it helped them to meet their personal needs and enhance communication. In contrast, four problematic patterns produced triangulations described as conflictual or unsupportive. The implications of these patterns for family therapy are discussed with an emphasis on the therapist as both clinician and advocate for better services from multiple providers. 相似文献

Two contrasted father-mother-infant interactions are observed longitudinally during trilogue play. They illustrate the contribution of recent research to the exploration of triangulation in infancy: namely, the infant's capacity to handle triangular interactions and share her affects with her two parents, and the way that this capacity is recruited in functional versus problematic alliances. It is likely that an infant under stress when interacting with one parent will protest at that parent and also at the other. Such is the case when, for example, the father acts intrusively while playing with his baby. The infant is then driven to avert and turns to the mother. The regulation of this dyadic intrusion-avoidance pattern at family level depends on the family alliance. When coparenting is supportive, the mother validates the infant's bid for help without interfering with the father. Thus, the problematic pattern is contained in the dyad, and the infant's triangular capacities remain in the service of her own developmental goals. But when coparenting is hostile-competitive, the mother ignores the infant's bid or engages with her in a way that interferes with her play with her father. In this case, the infant's triangular capacities are used to relieve the tension between the parents. The importance of tracing family process back to infancy for family therapy is discussed. 相似文献

The relationships between stressful life events during childhood and differentiation of self and intergenerational triangulation in adulthood 下载免费PDF全文
Ora Peleg 《International journal of psychology》2014,49(6):462-470
This study examined the relationships between stressful life events in childhood and differentiation of self and intergenerational triangulation in adulthood. The sample included 217 students (173 females and 44 males) from a college in northern Israel. Participants completed the Hebrew versions of Life Events Checklist (LEC), Differentiation of Self Inventory‐Revised (DSI‐R) and intergenerational triangulation (INTRI). The main findings were that levels of stressful life events during childhood and adolescence among both genders were positively correlated with the levels of fusion with others and intergenerational triangulation. The levels of positive life events were negatively related to levels of emotional reactivity, emotional cut‐off and intergenerational triangulation. Levels of stressful life events in females were positively correlated with emotional reactivity. Intergenerational triangulation was correlated with emotional reactivity, emotional cut‐off, fusion with others and I‐position. Findings suggest that families that experience higher levels of stressful life events may be at risk for higher levels of intergenerational triangulation and lower levels of differentiation of self. 相似文献
