Financial capability,money attitudes and socioeconomic status: Risks for experiencing adverse financial events

The risk of experiencing adverse financial events (e.g. bankruptcy) depends on the world economy and on individual differences in financial and psychological variables. Analysing data from 109,472 British survey respondents, this study reports the risks associated with financial capabilities, money attitudes, and socio-economic status for suffering negative financial outcomes. The results show that (1) socio-economic status is associated with financial capabilities but not with money attitudes; (2) money attitudes and financial capabilities are largely independent; (3) money attitudes and financial capabilities each contribute independently to the risk of experiencing adverse financial outcomes, even after adjusting for socio-economic status; and (4) financial capabilities are greater risk factors of adverse financial outcomes than money attitudes; the latter, however, are likely to be promising targets for interventions.     

Wisselende grense: visuele kuns en alledaagse aktiwiteit

Kontemporêre visuele kuns sluit toenemend aktiwiteite in wat die terrein van alledaagse aktiwiteit betree. Insgelyks penetreer estetiese begrippe wat voorheen tot die kunsdissipline beperk was die sfeer van bestaansroetine en selfs beroepsterreine soos besigheidsbestuur wat voorheen as onversoenbaar met die kunste beskou was. Die gevolg is dat die konvensionele grense tussen kunsaktiwiteit, en enige ander aktiwiteit, ook die skryf van tekste oor die visuele kuns, onder druk verkeer en ernstige vrae oor die wesenlike inhoud van kuns en selfs die behoud van die kategorie ‘kuns’ ontstaan. Met, as vertrekpunt, die uitsprake en kunsaktiwiteite van die Duitse ‘beeldhouer’, Joseph Beuys, word 'n oorsig aangebied van die wisselwerking tussen visuele kunsvorme en ander alledaagse aktiwiteite. Die implikasies van hierdie transgressie van grense vir oproepe om 'n her-mitologisering van kuns en die aansluitende rekonstruksie van die waardestelsels van die gemeenskap word uit 'n aantal perspektiewe belig, en enkele aansluitende filosofiese interpretasies van die funksie en doel van kunsaktiwiteit word gebruik om die begrip 'artistieke deelname' in reliëf te plaas.     

Cases to cases: A study of psychotherapy

The background to the study was a research project on psychotherapy (279 subjects) in the context of the Finnish Student Health Service. Patients were divided into three groups by duration of treatment. For each group, a hypothetical case was constructed. The hypothetical case in relation to short-term treatment (less than six months) is someone whose temporarily disturbed mental balance is supported by the therapist. The hypothetical case in relation to medium-term treatment (one to two years) exhibits recovery through release from self-objects. The hypothetical case in relation to long-term treatment (two to five years) was marked by the partial working through of object relationships.     

Tracing the Path from Personality — via Cooperativeness — to Conservation

Ecological behaviour is often conceptualized as an instance of cooperating in a social dilemma situation. Thus, it has been argued to relate to dispositional tendencies of moral virtue and pro‐social orientation. To embed such notions in models of basic personality, we herein predicted that the recently proposed sixth basic personality factor, Honesty–Humility — which specifically pertains to individual differences in cooperativeness — is linked to environmental attitudes and ecological behaviour. Results from two studies (N = 137 and N = 531, respectively) supported these hypotheses and showed that Honesty–Humility explains incremental variance beyond the remaining, more classical five factors of personality. In addition, mediation analyses revealed that Honesty–Humility exerts part of its influence via individual differences in pro‐social value orientations. Individual tendencies to cooperate in social dilemma situations could thus be shown to form a bridge between basic personality dimensions and ecological behaviour. The Elusive General Factor of Personality: The Acquaintance Effect

A general factor (g_p) at the apex of personality has been suggested to account for the correlations between the Big Five. Although the g_p has received ample support from monomethod studies, results from studies incorporating different methods have remained rather ambiguous; some have identified a g_p across different informants, whereas others have not. It was hypothesized that these divergent findings are a result of varying lengths of acquaintance between raters. To this end, the current study presents a multitrait multi‐informant meta‐analysis (total N = 11 941) that found weak support for a g_p as a substantive trait of personality. Evidence for a g_p was susceptible to the length of acquaintance between informants. Although a g_p could be identified for short‐term acquaintances, it remained elusive at long‐term acquaintance. Thus, the g_p in other ratings more likely reflects normative ratings of an average individual rather than ratings of the specific target person. Observed-Score Equating: An Overview

In this paper, an overview of the observed-score equating (OSE) process is provided from the perspective of a unifying equating framework (von Davier in von Davier (Ed.), Statistical models for test equating, scaling, and linking, Springer, New York, pp. 1–17, 2011b). The framework includes all OSE approaches. Issues related to the test, common items, and sampling designs and their relationship to measurement and equating are discussed. Challenges to the equating process, model assumptions, and approaches to equating evaluation are also presented. The equating process is illustrated step-by-step with a real data example from a licensure test.

Does the level of physical exercise affect physiological and psychological responses to psychosocial stress in women?

ObjectivesTo test the Cross-Stressor Adaptation hypothesis for females by examining whether physically exercising young women show reduced physiological and psychological stress responses to a psychosocial stressor.DesignForty-seven healthy young women with different levels of physical exercise (17 not or rarely exercising, 15 moderately exercising, 15 vigorously exercising) underwent the Trier Social Stress Test for Groups (TSST-G); physiological and psychological stress responses during and after stress induction were compared.MethodANOVAs with repeated measures were used to compare stress reactivity and recovery between the three exercise groups. Heart rate and salivary free cortisol were used as indicators of physiological stress response, state anxiety, mood, and calmness as indicators of psychological stress response. For physiological stress reactivity, the areas under the curve with respect to the ground (AUC_G) were compared.ResultsIn all three exercise groups, experimentally induced stress led to a significant rise in heart rate, cortisol, and state anxiety; mood and calmness significantly decreased. As hypothesized, the pattern of the physiological stress response differed for the three exercise groups, with lowered reactivity in the more active groups. However, the psychological stress response partly went in the opposite direction: Exercising participants reported a higher mood decrease, suggesting a dissociation of the physiological and psychological stress responses.ConclusionsThe findings suggest that the Cross-Stressor Adaptation hypothesis is also valid for young women; however, only with regard to physiological stress response. The unexpected findings for psychological stress response need to be further explored in experimental studies.
