This research examined the impact of a change in school diversity on school children's intergroup relations. A longitudinal survey tracked 551 White British and Asian British students (Mage = 11.32) transitioning from elementary (time 1) to secondary (time 2) school in an ethnically segregated town in the United Kingdom. We estimated a multivariate, multilevel model. A cross-sectional comparison of segregated schools and a mixed elementary school at time 1 revealed that both Asian and White British in the mixed school reported more positive intergroup relations. A longitudinal analysis found that the transition from segregated elementary to mixed secondary schools was associated with Asian British developing more positive intergroup relations. White British reported overall less positive intergroup relations, although only trust decreased; evidence from other measures remains inconclusive. The findings are important for understanding early stages of diversity exposure, and the impact of changing diversity levels on majority and minority groups. 相似文献

Rapid categorization of foveal and extrafoveal natural images: associated ERPs and effects of lateralization 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Humans are fast and accurate at performing an animal categorization task with natural photographs briefly flashed centrally. Here, this central categorization task is compared to a three position task in which photographs could appear randomly either centrally, or at 3.6 degrees eccentricity (right or left) of the fixation point. A mild behavioral impairment was found with peripheral stimuli with no evidence in support of hemispheric superiority; but enlarging the window of spatial attention to three possible stimuli locations had no behavioral cost on the processing of central images. Performance in the central categorization task has been associated with a large difference between the potentials evoked to target and non-target correct trials, starting about 150 ms after stimulus onset on frontal sites. Present results show that this activity originates within extrastriate visual cortices and probably reflects perceptual stimuli differences processed within areas involved in object recognition. Latencies, slopes, and peak amplitudes of this differential activity were invariant to stimulus position and attentional load. Stimulus location uncertainty and lateralization did not affect speed of visual processing. 相似文献

This study provides a meta-analytic review of cognitive and behavioural interventions for chronic pain in the elderly, focusing
on treatment effectiveness. Included in the analysis are studies in which a comparison was made either to a control condition
or to pre-treatment. A total of 12 outcome studies published or reported between January 1975 and March 2008, were identified
involving participants 60 years and above and providing 16 separate treatment interventions. The analysis indicated that cognitive
and behavioural interventions were effective on self-reported pain experience, yielding an overall effect size of 0.47. However,
there were no significant effects of cognitive and behavioural treatment on symptoms of depression, physical functioning and
medication use. Methodological issues concerning design, outcome measures and treatment are discussed and recommendations

We focused on the direct relationship between job satisfaction experienced during working life and life-satisfaction after retirement. Also we wonder on differences about aspects of the former work evoked as pleasant. These questions are treated by differentiating women and men perceptions, and the perceptions according to age. Data on 396 French subjects, 182 men and 214 women (age range 66 to 98) were used to examine how life-satisfaction in retirement is linked to the perception of former job satisfaction. Other indications of adaptation are retained, as self-esteem or conversely boredom. Results show a) that job satisfaction is a predictable variable for life-satisfaction after retirement, b) that this impact is weaker for youngest, c) a strong similarity between men and women, whatever is their age. This study examines how non-Western immigrants' acculturation strategies are related to managers' hiring rankings. It examines whether hiring managers differ in personality trait inferences depending on whether the candidate is a Turkish immigrant or a native Norwegian. Managers (N?=?436) evaluated three job applicants in terms of personality and hirability. Across three experimental conditions, the information of one (target) was manipulated and presented as either a native, as an integrated Turkish immigrant, and as a separated Turkish immigrant. The separated Turkish target received lower hirability rankings compared with the other target applicants. The integrated Turkish target was rated as more open, extraverted, conscientious, agreeable, and neurotic than the two other targets. Personality ratings of the Norwegian and the separated Turkish target did not differ significantly. Evaluations of personality were associated with hiring ranking of the Norwegian target only. 相似文献

Attack by red wood ants (Formica lugubris Zett.) on an “alien” species (Formica cunicularia Latr.) was analyzed both in the laboratory and in the field. Elements of such attack were recorded. Attack and conflict were observed in each encounter and follow immediately after the first contact. This overt attack was vigorous and generally led to the death of the alien. Laboratory data were confirmed by field observations, although under these conditions aggressiveness of F lugubris appeared increased possibly because of the animal's familiarity with its surroundings. 相似文献

This research looks at work well-being for human resources staffs, which are brought to manage relations between individuals and organization, between organization and society, between individuals and society. 263 human resources staffs performed a questionnaire estimating work facets such professionals satisfaction and commitment, work conditions and health. Results shown firstly a work quality of life for staffs, what does not prevent them from reporting hardness (temporal constraints, working overload), secondly the absence of systematic effects of status, age and gender on work attitudes and health. This study examines the advisability to distinguish dimensions of discipline, by evaluating the Dimensions of Discipline Inventory
(DDI, Straus and Fauchier 2007) in a sample of Belgian undergraduate students (N = 371) who retrospectively reported on their mothers’ and fathers’ discipline behaviors aimed at correcting child misbehavior
at age 10. First, confirmatory factor analyses showed that a model with nine factors fitted the data best, but also a model
with four second-order factors was acceptable. Second, a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis with a Belgian and a U.S.
sample (N = 633) provided additional evidence for the nine-factor structure. Correlations between DDI scales and other parenting related
variables demonstrated meaningful relations. Additionally, some DDI subscales were associated with measures of current problem
behavior. To conclude, the present study illustrated that it is both useful and possible to differentiate between discipline
