50% off or buy one get one free? Frame preference as a function of consumable nature in dairy products

Previous studies on how framing differentially affects consumer perceptions of value from equivalent deals indicate that perceptions of deal value from price-saving versus extra-product promotions are moderated by the stock-up characteristic of the category. In this study, the authors explored the relationship between stock-up characteristic and frame preference and the influence of the consumable nature of goods on frame preference. An experiment involving 223 student participants showed that consumable nature, but not stock-up characteristic, affected frame preference. The authors discuss the implications of this finding for the study of information framing and how it impacts consumer judgment and decision making.     

Toward using confidence intervals to compare correlations

Confidence intervals are widely accepted as a preferred way to present study results. They encompass significance tests and provide an estimate of the magnitude of the effect. However, comparisons of correlations still rely heavily on significance testing. The persistence of this practice is caused primarily by the lack of simple yet accurate procedures that can maintain coverage at the nominal level in a nonlopsided manner. The purpose of this article is to present a general approach to constructing approximate confidence intervals for differences between (a) 2 independent correlations, (b) 2 overlapping correlations, (c) 2 nonoverlapping correlations, and (d) 2 independent R2s. The distinctive feature of this approach is its acknowledgment of the asymmetry of sampling distributions for single correlations. This approach requires only the availability of confidence limits for the separate correlations and, for correlated correlations, a method for taking into account the dependency between correlations. These closed-form procedures are shown by simulation studies to provide very satisfactory results in small to moderate sample sizes. The proposed approach is illustrated with worked examples.

“纪念中国逻辑学会成立30周年大会”记略

2009年10月23日至26日,由中国逻辑学会主办的“纪念中国逻辑学会成立30周年大会”在四川成都隆重举行。本次会议由四川省逻辑学会、四川大学成人教育学院、四川大学公共管理学院、西南财经大学人文学院以及绵阳师范学院文学与传播学院等5家单位承办,北京大学、清华大学等17家单位参与协办。本次会议盛况空前,来自全国的近200余位逻辑学界的专家、学者相聚蓉城,畅谈中国逻辑学研究30年发展的历程。     

针对T细胞介导的胰岛自身免疫的治疗策略

1A型糖尿病是由T细胞所介导的器官特异性自身免疫性疾病。人们利用转基因技术、自身抗原疫苗接种、单克隆抗体治疗等新兴技术通过诱导自身免疫耐受,改变免疫调节因子,调节细胞凋亡等途径阻止了自身免疫反应对胰岛的攻击。这些针对其发病机制所提出的新型治疗策略让人们看到了治疗自身免疫型糖尿病的希望。     

Appraisal Underpinnings of Affective Chronometry: The Role of Appraisals in Emotion Habituation

ABSTRACT In light of the lack of studies examining the cognitive components of affective chronometry, this research examined the appraisals associated with emotion habituation, using anger as the emotion of focus. Anger and its appraisals were assessed repeatedly over a day in the participants' naturalistic contexts. The trajectory of decline in anger over time after its first appearance was found to be a function of chronic coping styles. More importantly, the trajectories of anger-related appraisals generally corresponded to that of anger and were also moderated by coping styles in ways consistent with the moderating effects of coping styles on anger. Implications of these results for affective chronometry research and for appraisal research are discussed.     

Gender, Race and Morality in the Virtual World and Its Relationship to Morality in the Real World

This research examines children’s beliefs about moral behavior in the virtual world and the real world. Participants were 515 children, average age 12 years old. One-third were African American and two-thirds were Caucasian American. Children completed surveys mailed to their homes which included questions about the acceptability of morally questionable virtual behaviors. Findings indicated: (1) gender and race differences in the acceptability of morally questionable behaviors in the virtual world; (2) moral behavior and moral attitudes in the real world predicted the acceptability of morally questionable behaviors in the virtual world; and (3) the frequency of IT use predicted the acceptability of morally questionable behaviors in the virtual world. Implications for children’s IT education are discussed.
