This paper considers Hermann Hesse’s novel, The Glass Bead Game, in the light of Paulo Freire’s educational philosophy. The Glass Bead Game is set in Castalia, a “pedagogical province” of the 23rd century. It is argued that the central character in the book, Joseph Knecht, undergoes a complex process of conscientisation. Knecht develops an increasingly critical understanding of Castalian society, questioning some of its most cherished assumptions while nonetheless deepening his appreciation of the beauty of the Glass Bead Game. He becomes less certain of his certainties as he grows older, and eventually decides to give away his prestigious post as Magister Ludi (Master of the Glass Bead Game) to pursue a quiet life as a tutor. Dialogue plays a key role in the development of Knecht’s critical consciousness. Freirean theory is seen to provide a robust framework for the analysis of key themes in Hesse’s text. At the same time, The Glass Bead Game is helpful in demonstrating the meaning and significance of conscientisation and dialogue for educational lives.  相似文献

Rats take correct novel routes and shortcuts in an enclosed maze   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In 3 experiments, rats were allowed to travel selected routes along the internal alleys of a cross-maze that led from one distinctive end box to another. The maze and procedures used were designed to control the rats' ability to use intrinsic and extrinsic cues to their location in the maze; thus, only the internal geometry of the maze could be learned and used to travel between one end box and another. After an initial exploration phase, rats were given novel routes and shortcut tests that involved peripheral alleys not before traveled. Rats chose the correct novel path or shortcut significantly above chance on some tests in Experiments 1 and 2 and significantly better than a control group in Experiment 3. The findings suggest that rats were able to compute novel routes and shortcuts within the maze on the basis of limited experience with the internal geometry of the maze.  相似文献

Two experiments examined the effects of video coherence on the discrimination of relative motion by pigeons using a go/no-go procedure. Pigeons were trained to discriminate video stimuli in which the camera's perspective went either "around" or "through" the interior opening of 2 approaching objects. Experiment 1 used a within-groups design and Experiment 2 used a between-groups design to examine how sequencing these videos in a coherent smooth forward order versus a randomly scrambled order influenced learning. Discrimination learning was significantly faster with the coherent sequences. It is suggested that the pigeon visual system integrates 3-dimensional motion signals across space and time to produce a stable, object-based, perceptual world.  相似文献

Memory plasticity, or the ability to improve one's memory performance through instruction and training, is known to decline during adulthood. However, direct comparisons among middle childhood, adulthood, and old age are lacking. The authors examined memory plasticity in an age-comparative multisession training study. One hundred and eight participants ages 9-10, 11-12, 20-25, and 65-78 years learned and practiced an imagery-based mnemonic technique to encode and retrieve words by location cues. Individuals of all ages were able to acquire and optimize use of the technique. Older adults and children showed similar baseline performance and improvement through mnemonic instruction. However, in line with tenets from life-span psychology (P. B. Baltes, 1987), children profited more from mnemonic practice and reached higher levels of final performance than did older adults.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to document changes in plasma concentrations of total cortisol, porcine corticosteroid-binding globulin (pCBG), and the free cortisol index (FCI) in pigs over a 6-h period in response to adrenal stimulation or suppression. Twenty-four 8-week old pigs allotted in equal numbers were administered ACTH, dexamethasone or saline, and blood samples were collected every 15 min via an indwelling jugular catheter for 1 h prior to and 5 h following treatment. Total plasma cortisol increased in ACTH-treated pigs and decreased in dexamethasone-treated pigs within 0.25 and 0.5 h, respectively. In contrast, pCBG concentration was altered in an inverse fashion subsequent to the changes exhibited in total cortisol. FCI reflected the changes observed in total cortisol. These results further document the negative relationship that exists between circulating concentrations of plasma cortisol and pCBG, and illustrate that this association exists under conditions of acute stress in the pig.  相似文献

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by an obsessive concern over a perceived flaw in bodily appearance. If a minor flaw does exist, the patient displays unwarranted distress. This preoccupation typically leads to compulsive behaviors, such as mirror checking or mirror avoiding, camouflaging, and seeking reassurance from others regarding one’s appearance or the perceived “flaw.” Although some theorists have outlined important maintaining mechanisms of the disorder, a full model of the etiology and maintenance of this disorder has only recently been articulated in the literature (Neziroglu, Roberts, & Yaryura-Tobias, (2004). Response styles theory posits that rumination represents a trait vulnerability to depression. Recent evidence has suggested that rumination predicts changes in depression more strongly among individuals with high levels of negative cognition. Three studies evaluated this model of interactive vulnerabilities. Study 1 provided empirical support for the distinction between rumination and negative cognitive content. The next 2 studies investigated the interactive model in the laboratory. Study 2 randomly assigned participants to either ruminate or distract following a sad mood induction. This study found that rumination was more strongly associated with dysphoria among individuals who report high levels of negative cognition. Similarly, Study 3 found that rumination and negative cognition interact to predict changes in dysphoria across a no-task delay period following a sad mood induction. These studies provide support for an interactive model in which rumination amplifies the deleterious effects of negative cognition.  相似文献

Research indicates that it might be possible to change personality traits through intervention, but this clinical research has primarily focused on changing neuroticism. To date, there are no established, proven techniques for changing other domains of personality, such as conscientiousness and openness. This research examined the effects of a two-week smartphone-based intervention to either change one facet of conscientiousness (i.e. self-discipline) or one facet of openness to experience (i.e. openness to action). Two intervention studies (total N = 255) with two active intervention groups for mutual comparisons were conducted. Results of self-reports and observer reports showed that people who wanted to become more self-disciplined were less self-disciplined at pretest. Similarly, people who wanted to become more open to action were less open to action at pretest. The results showed that people who chose the self-discipline intervention showed greater increases in self-discipline, and people who chose the openness to action intervention showed greater increases in openness to action compared with the other group. Changes were maintained until follow-up two and six weeks after the end of the intervention. Future work is needed to examine whether these personality changes are enduring or reflect temporary accentuation as a result of participation in the intervention. © 2020 European Association of Personality Psychology  相似文献
