Can Messages Make a Difference? The Association Between E‐Mail Messages and Health Outcomes in Diabetes Patients

This investigation examined the impact of social support messages on patient health outcomes. Forty‐one American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian patients received a total of 618 e‐mail messages from their healthcare provider (HCP). The e‐mail messages were divided into 3,565 message units and coded for instances of emotional social support. Patient glycosulated hemoglobin scores (HbA1c) showed significantly improved glycemic control and emotional social support messages were associated with significant decreases in HbA1c values. Patient involvement with the system, measured by system login frequency and the frequency of uploaded blood glucose scores to the HCP, did not predict change in HbA1c.     

A Principle of Incarnation in Derrida’s (Theologische?) Jugendschriften: Towards a Confessional Theology

In pursuing the question of incarnation, it must be noted from the beginning that what is at stake is Platonism. More specifically, my concern will be the relationship of Christian theology to Platonism. In this paper, I contest contemporary readings which suggest that Socrates offers an "incarnational" paradigm and construe Derrida as a "Platonist" more traditionally understood. Instead, I will argue that latent in Derrida's earlier accounts of language, particularly in Speech and Phenomena , one finds an incarnational account of language which is precisely the basis for his critique of Platonic metaphysics.     

Discrimination Learning and Multiple Reversals in Young Adult and Older Monkeys Macaca arctoides

Two groups of five young adult and older stumptailed macaques (Macaca arctoides) were tested on a visual discrimination task followed by a reversal upon attainment of criterion; task and reversal were repeated until 20 reversals with the same pair of objects had been completed. Both groups required more trials to learn the first reversal than the original discrimination, with no significant difference between the groups. Older monkeys tended to show more perseverative errors on early reversals, but a striking improvement in their scores across successive blocks of reversals culminated in performances virtually indistinguishable from those of the young group by the end of testing.
