This paper concerns Hume’s treatment of the distinction of reason in the Treatise, I.i.7. Many scholars have claimed that there is a tension between his account of the distinction of reason and his commitment to his so-called separability principle. I explain why Hume’s account of the distinction of reason is fully consistent with the principle, and show how other discussions, both critical of and sympathetic to Hume, fail to appreciate the radicalness of his position. I evaluate Hume’s bold position and compare it to earlier positions (Aquinas) and current positions (Donald Davidson).  相似文献

The majority of employees state that their manager is the worst aspect of their job. Over the past decade, a considerable amount of research has been devoted to identifying factors that contribute to immoral and ineffective leader behavior. Researchers have continually linked personality, and in particular narcissism, to the proclivity of leaders to behave ineffectively and unethically. This study represents an initial attempt to examine the relationship between narcissism and leadership in an organizational setting to determine the extent to which narcissism is related to managerial effectiveness and integrity. Results indicated that narcissism was negatively related to supervisor ratings of interpersonal performance and integrity. In contrast, narcissism was unrelated to subordinate ratings of interpersonal performance and integrity. Furthermore, narcissism was unrelated to supervisor and subordinate ratings of conceptual performance. The unique relationship between narcissistic leaders and their followers is offered as an explanation for these findings.  相似文献

In this paper, I describe how new mothers can be preoccupied with their mothers and can replay their relationship with them transferentially with professionals and nannies, who become surrogates for their mothers. New mothers need affirmation from their mothers and from mother surrogates because, in their new role, they experience a sense of helplessness and anxiety and have difficulty tolerating aggression, ambivalence, and conflict. Stern's “motherhood constellation” and “good grandmother transference” are useful constructs for understanding how to best approach and help new mothers and their babies. From observations in multiple dyadic parent–child groups at the Pacella Parent Child Center, I have distilled two factors that help new mothers address their anxieties—the bonds these mothers make with one another and their transferential bond with the group leader and other professionals at the center. I critically discuss and compare theoretical inferences derived from individual psychoanalytic or psychotherapeutic work (as exemplified by Balsam's work) with the inferences derived from Stern's dyadic model and with inferences derived from psychoanalytically informed group situations. I consider the implications of the ubiquity of ambivalence conflicts, especially around aggression.  相似文献

Violence prevention programs can help children cope with trauma if effective strategies are developed to address youth victimization and children's exposure to domestic violence and trauma. Psychoanalysts are in a unique position to develop such primary and secondary prevention programs for children for whom violence is part of everyday life. An intense long-term relationship is an essential treatment ingredient for these profoundly troubled youngsters. In such a relationship, the therapist/analyst cannot react automatically to the inevitable hostile, destructive aggression that emerges in the treatment of severely traumatized children. A particularly key contribution by Osofsky is her discussion of the ubiquity of “countertransference every day in people who work with traumatized children.” Here I provide a clinical example of a failure that resulted from my own countertransference.  相似文献

Recent evidence suggests that the rapid apprehension of small numbers of objects-- often called subitizing-- engages a system which allows representation of up to 4 objects but is distinct from other aspects of numerical processing. We examined subitizing by studying people with Williams syndrome (WS), a genetic deficit characterized by severe visuospatial impairments, and normally developing children (4-6.5 years old). In Experiment 1, participants first explicitly counted displays of 1 to 8 squares that appeared for 5 s and reported "how many". They then reported "how many" for the same displays shown for 250 ms, a duration too brief to allow explicit counting, but sufficient for subitizing. All groups were highly accurate up to 8 objects when they explicitly counted. With the brief duration, people with WS showed almost perfect accuracy up to a limit of 3 objects, comparable to 4 year-olds but fewer than either 5 or 6.5 year-old children. In Experiment 2, participants were asked to report "how many" for displays that were presented for an unlimited duration, as rapidly as they could while remaining accurate. Individuals with WS responded as rapidly as 6.5 year-olds, and more rapidly than 4 year-olds. However, their accuracy was as in Experiment 1, comparable to 4 year-olds, and lower than older children. These results are consistent with previous results indicating that people with WS can simultaneously represent multiple objects, but that they have a smaller capacity than older children, on par with 4 year-olds. This pattern is discussed in the context of normal and abnormal development of visuospatial skills, in particular those linked to the representation of numerosity.  相似文献

While the Angoff (1971) is a commonly used cut score method, critics ( Berk, 1996; Impara & Plake, 1997 ) argue the Angoff places too‐high cognitive demands on raters. In response to criticisms of the Angoff, a number of modifications to the method have been proposed. Some suggested Angoff modifications include using an iterative rating process, presenting judges with normative data about item performance, revising the rating judgment into a Yes/No decision, assigning relative weights to dimensions within a test, and using item response theory in setting cut scores. In this study, subject matter expert raters were provided with a ‘difficulty anchored’ rating scale to use while making Angoff ratings; this scale can be viewed as a variation of the Angoff normative data modification. The rating scale presented test items having known p‐values as anchors, and served as a simple means of providing normative information to guide the Angoff rating process. Results are discussed regarding reliability of the mean Angoff rating (.73) and the correlation of mean Angoff ratings with item difficulty (observed r ranges from .65 to .73).  相似文献

Inverting a face impairs perception of its features and recognition of its identity. Whether faces are special in this regard is a current topic of research and debate. Kanizsa studied the role of facial features and environmental context in perceiving the emotion and identity of upright and inverted faces. He found that observers are biased to interpret faces in a retinal coordinate frame, and that this bias is readily overruled by increased realism of facial features, but not easily overruled by environmental context. An additional factor contributing to a retinal coordinate-frame interpretation may be the ambiguous nature of the face stimuli. Since his facial expressions are interpretable both upright and inverted, they may in both orientations activate an endogenous attentional process for faces. We present visual search and change-blindness experiments that explore how inversion, negation, and facial emotion affect visual attention to static faces. We find that attention to faces is impaired by inversion and negation. We also find that the parts of the face that receive greater attention can be influenced by the emotional expression of the face. We propose to extend these experiments to dynamic faces. To this end, we develop a theory of the visual representation of dynamic faces, in which faces are represented by classes of `spacetime fragments'-moving regions of the face with high informational content. We then present ideas for future experiments which are motivated by the spacetime fragment theory, and which should serve to constrain its further development.  相似文献
